There's so much missed potential.
tarbosh2200010 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In a future where stylish Cardigan sweaters are the norm, so are human-defending robots. When the latest-model android, J269 (the perfectly-cast Gruner) stops an attempted rape of Robgen company employee Nora Rochester (Ashbrook), and accidentally kills one of the bosses in the process, the CEO, Goddard Marx (Glover) calls in a bunch of mercenaries to put an end to J269, such as Major West (Kober) and Epsilon Leader (Holden - they didn't even give her a proper name, sadly). So now Nora and J269 have to fend off their attackers, all while INN (groan) news reporter Gloria Takamatsu (Gurwitch) reports on things. Will Nora grow to love J269? Will he live to be robotic another day? Find out, or something...

Oh, The Terminator (1984)and Robocop (1987), what hath you wrought? If the makers of those movies could have predicted the slipstream of DTV crud left in their wake, would they have made them at all? Well, probably yes, but here we go with another run-through of a bunch of stuff we've seen before collated into a new package and now called Automatic. Of course, the melange wouldn't be complete without a healthy dose of Die Hard (1988), and we also have a pinch of Blade Runner (1982), a dash of Universal Soldier (1992), and it's reminiscent of competitors like Class of 1999 II (1994), American Cyborg: Steel Warrior (1993) and Fortress (1992), but Fortress is better. And Fortress (not to mention Robocop, of course) actually have Kurtwood Smith, rather than the Kurtwood Smith lookalike on display here.

Let's not kid ourselves here: this is a sci-fi slog. yes, Olivier does some Gruner-Fu on the baddies, and that does help, and there's some gun-shooting, but it all could have been so much better. Jeff Kober is wasted in what is a glorified sit-down role, and Marjean Holden is a far cry from the butt-kicking of Ballistic. Even Annabelle Gurwitch has nothing to do. The whole mercenaries versus robots thing could have worked, if only the filmmakers didn't cling to tried and true clichés like a desperate man to a life raft. Go nuts! Break free! That's what we were hoping for with Automatic. It doesn't even have a Timebomb-era Michael Biehn to power things along. Instead, it all takes place in one building, for the most part, and they never turn any lights on.

That, perhaps, is the most infuriating thing about this and other movies of its ilk. It's not hard to turn the lights on. This is the basics - it's a movie. We're supposed to SEE it. How are they not grasping this? Children's movies and comedies are always well-lit. There's no excuse. Maybe they're trying to obfuscate its low budget, but that backfires because the whole no-lights thing screams "low budget". Who cares if it's low budget? Own it, don't try to vainly hide it. And while the outing, as a whole, is overly talky, it's good to see they predicted the rise of the Roomba by several years.

Automatic is typical 90's product, which we're usually in favor of, but there's so much missed potential. Consequently, it holds a very loose grip on the audience, and surely was just another tape collecting dust on a video store shelf. And not entirely unjustifiably.

Low-rent action all the way
Leofwine_draca3 June 2014
AUTOMATIC is a low-rent sci-fi B-movie starring French martial artist Olivier Gruner, a guy who had all the acting ability of a hunk of cheese but who knew how to kick when it came to the fight scenes. This is an incredibly cheap-looking movie that sees Gruner playing an android who rebels against his corrupt creators and is forced to defend himself from a hit squad.

The entire film takes place in a dimly-lit building with the characters prowling the corridors and engaging in some low-rent fight scenes. The choreography is poor and the script worse, and it doesn't help that the cast is filled with actors giving laissez-faire performances which hardly fill the viewer with confidence.

Throughout AUTOMATIC, the scriptwriter rips off many other, better movies. The single-location stalking sequences are reminiscent of the basic premise of DIE HARD, while of course THE TERMINATOR hangs over everything with the presence of androids (although the movie doesn't feature much of the cool robotic effect stuff you saw generally in '90s B-movies). There are also lots of scenes inspired by ALIENS. Inevitably, this movie can't hold a candle to any of those classics and is a completely forgettable piece of popcorn fare.

"Let's do this clean, quick and quiet"
hwg1957-102-26570417 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There's a lot of shooting and fighting in this film and that's about it. The story as it proceeds gets more ridiculous, raising many questions that never get answered. Olivier Gruner plays an android which suits him as he can't really act and he may be good at unarmed combat but the constant underlighting of the film makes it difficult to see what is going on. Visually the whole film is a clunky mess. One character I thought had been killed pops up later in the confusing proceedings. Perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention. I did like John Glover as Goddard Marx, who created the androids, as he was entertaining at least. Marjean Holden unfortunately came late into the movie which was a shame. On the whole not that exciting.

Oliver Grunner steals the show in "Automatic"!!
brian james1 April 2002
Oliver Grunner stars in this very entertaining movie about cyborgs and the effect they have on a futuristic society. John Glover stars as Goddard Marx, the president of RobGen; an artificial human production company. This IS the future and these things or androids are as common as automobiles and are used for factory labor, security, entertainment and even as sexual surrogate partners. Everything is fine at the company until a RobGen executive tries to savagely rape a female secretary named Nora Rochester (well played by Daphne Ashbrook). Oliver (he plays multiple roles very well in this movie!) interrupts the attack (he IS programmed to protect life, after all!) and in the course of the encounter accidently kills the out of control corporate man. What follows after this is a mad struggle for survival and escape as Goddard Marx calls in a special human merc unit led by a Major West (well played by Jeff Kober). There is lots of good special effects action as well as a few very interesting surprises in the plot. Grunner is always at his acting best and carries the role of J269, etc. well. Add this one to your collections of movies on the science fiction shelf! Good movie!!

* * OUT OF FIVE

Olvier Gruner stars as J269 a robot who becomes the target of a group of mercenaries sent to destroy him after he kills a man trying to rape Nora Rochester (Daphne Ashbrook), fearing bad press Goddard Marx orders the machine dead in this well made yet very routine rip off of Robocop and The Terminator. Automatic however does have good actionscenes.

Raise Your Hand If This Sounds Familiar
refinedsugar12 September 2023
Mixing elements of sci-fi with your standard blend of run 'n gun action, Olivier Gruner enters the world of cyborgs again in 'Automatic'. The title is also the name of the line of cyborgs who double as personal servants & home protection. There's some light themes explored like if they can feel, their rights and discrimination from humans but really it's about action.

Robgen Industries and it's founder Marx (John Glover) are about to launch the newest addition much to the chagrin of financial money man Hammer (Dennis Lipscomb) who's lost faith in Marx. When a corporate exec tries to rape his secretary Nora Rochester (Daphne Ashbrook) after hours, J269 (Gruner) comes to her rescue and accidentally kills the man. Not wanting a PR disaster on the eve of his big press conference, Marx turns to some mercs lead by Major West (Jeff Kober) to take them both out.

I loved the opening harking back to Glover's role as a commercial salesman in 'Robocop 2'. I liked the concept and the first bit of setting the stage as the creators in these sorts of flicks are usually sympathetic and help so the opposite was fresh. Then it gets a little stagnant - lots of guns going off, some martial arts from Gruner, chase sequences ad nauseam in low lighting - but they never leave the building.

'Automatic' came awfully close to boring me as both the settings & action wear thin. Gruner holds his own as does Ashbrook though and there's a final surprise on the way to a standard ending, but seeing Gruner in a checkered button up vest made me laugh and was worth the price of admission alone.

Why so many positive reviews for this predictable bilge?
wackyfuncrazy18 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This film is one of the worst robot sci-fi flicks I've ever seen. The actor who played the lead role was worse than awful - he can't say one line correctly in the whole film. The plot is nonsensical - the aforementioned robot is a security guard or something who is super-strong and knows martial arts (although why he needs martial arts when he's almost indestructible isn't explained) finds its boss attempting to rape a woman and kills him. The corporation then retaliates by sending HUMAN mercenaries after the robot! What did they expect? That the humans would somehow destroy the super-strong, super-intelligent robot? They should've sent super-strong ROBOTS after him - they had enough of them! I was never in any doubt that the robot would win every time - the mercenaries never come close to killing it. The viewer is expected to feel sympathy for the robot and the other robots despite the fact that they're busy taking jobs from the humans as well as killing them - I was rooting for the humans all the way. They even have this ridiculous "sorrowful" scene with a robot head with no body with the woman saying something like how awful and cruel it is! Yeah, the next time I throw a broken toaster away I'm going to write a eulogy and say a few words... a truly nauseous scene indeed.

As I said before, the viewer is never in any doubt that the robot would win, the mercenaries never had a hope; and I'm expected to delight in the killing of the mercenaries trying to make a living by a homicidal machine? Ha! The "twist" at the end takes the biscuit though. We find out the woman who was being attacked at the beginning is bizarrely also a robot and one of several hundred at that. Plot holes abound because of this: why are there hundreds of the same model? If the woman were in fact a robot, why didn't she have the super-strength like the protagonist had which would've enabled her to stop her attacker? Why didn't the man who was killed for attacking her know she was a robot and why didn't the protagonist robot know? Also vexing is the knowledge that the man was killed for attacking an advanced blow-up doll who wasn't even human and therefore was committing no crime thus making the robot even more homicidal and malfunctioning.

The producers seem to have wanted to make some sort of film highlighting the "plight" of robots except they seem to be unaware that robots don't exist and thus support for their film from the oppressed minorities of electrical beings is therefore impossible.

The morality, the plot, the acting, the characters and the general look of this film are completely amateur, unentertaining, predictable and formulaic. You've been warned.

Good fun for a late-night cable movie
AlabamaWorley19714 April 1999
Basic Die Hard rip-off action flick with touches of wit and even satire. John Glover as the jolly corporate mogul is great. (Particularly in the first five minutes!) Jeff Kober, as always, has a lot of fun with a small role. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would!

Robots in disguise...
fmarkland3217 March 2008
Olivier Gruner finally finds the one role he excels at, a robot who protects a woman from her boss/rapist who the corporation then decide to send an army to kill both her and the robot to avoid bad press and save face with stock holders, making Gruner the only one who can protect her and save the day. Automatic is a solid reason why one can't write off straight to video science fiction. Automatic is well directed, well made and has moments of true atmosphere. The movie also has some good ideas such as how robots are intertwined with humans and how the robot in question weren't trying to take over the world and rather provide confused responses to human nature. This is a movie where the bad guys are human and the hero is a robot who deals in black and white morals because it's the way he's been programmed. It also has that Blade Runner vibe of how the corporations are the evils of society and on its own level it succeeds rather well. This is easily the best thing you'll ever see from Olivier Gruner and aside from the bad acting from the cast (John Glover and Gruner aside...) the film works in both categories its been sold as. My only complaint was that it didn't feature more robot's responses toward issues regarding human nature but it is an Olivier Gruner movie. His best one by the way.

Classic Robot Flick
sydneyswesternsuburbs22 June 2011
Director John Murlowski who also created the classic flick, Black Cadillac 2003 has created another gem in Automatic.

Starring Oliver Gruner who has also been in another classic robot flick, Nemesis 1992.

Also starring John Glover who has also been in other classic flicks, Payback 1999 and another classic robot flick, RoboCop 2 1990.

Also starring Daphne Ashbrook.

I enjoyed the shootouts and action scenes.

Interesting little sci-fi action flick
Joxerlives5 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I was a huge fan of Nemisis and this motivated me to rent and watch this flick. It's not bad although it's not a patch on Oliver Gruner's previous great sci-fi action film.

The good? John Glover is good as always, a role he will excel at in countless different films and TV shows. Love the gag where the business executive is talking on the videophone about projecting family values unaware that his gorgeous naked teenage hookers are helping themselves to his champagne in the background. Gruner is OK, Daphne Ashbrook is gorgeous as she also was in the Dr Who movie. Love the fake Robocop style advert at the beginning, just playing so blatantly on the fears of middle class America. Must say I didn't see the twist coming at all, it was well played. Lovely ending too, you wonder what will become of these two but it's filled with hope.

Overall it lacks the philosophy of Nemisis although it does give it a go, what I really liked about Nemises was how it combined way OTT and imaginative shoot-em-up with touching musings about humanity. The teams of mercenaries hunting the heroes are dreadful clichés, especially the female team leader who is so obviously a ripoff of Vasquez in Aliens. Somehow it all just doesn't hang together as much as it should but for a blatantly low budget sci-fi action flick it does a great deal with what it has to work with. Altogether I'd say it's no Blade Runner but certainly a passable way to spend a couple of hours

Surprisingly moving reflection on treatment of A/Is
Westy-101 August 2000
Although it is obviously "low-budget," this film combines "standard" action sequences with surprisingly well-done reflections on the plight of sentient "artificial life forms." I recommend it for its "science fiction" themes, and for those strictly seeking an "action-thriller" it's not lacking in explosions, shootings, and other mayhem either.:)

Strong Silent Men
jkburkholder5 November 2000
Hey, the movie wasn't great. But for an evening in the easy chair and not much mind action..it was perfect. Oliver Gruner is my idea of a strong silent man...Not much talk but man, can he move. And Daphne Ashbrooke was not the wimpy female lead most often associated with "he-man" movies.

Excellent low-budget action movie
djtranny7 August 2006
For a low-budget action/sci-fi film, this is a really good movie. Of course the acting is rather crappy as you'd expect from Gruener, but the action is good and so are the sci-fi elements. I have seen a few of Gruener's movies and this one is by far his best in my opinion. One thing that really impressed me in this movie were the guns that were used. They had lcd type screens on them that allowed the holder to see around corners - a few years after this movie was made the military looked into actually using a similar system on their rifles.

I highly recommend any fan of action/sci-fi movies to rent this one as it is actually better than some of the big-budget action movies these days.

Great little film
kamnorth29 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Was this really a great movie? Not by any means, yet it was an unexpected low-budget semi Sci-Fi gem that entertained. I found it so entertaining I rated it a 8. Lately I've seen too many big budget films well plotted and well acted but not very engaging, entertaining or remotely interesting.

All the actors in Automatic made the most out of the roles they could, even if some ended up a little over the top. Penny Johnson who went on to play the president's wife in 24 is aggravating even silly but in a good way, Daphne Ashbrook gets a little aggravating too at moments later into the movie, but is so charming it is all forgivable. She is far prettier than the girl next door and someone you will have warm sentiments for.

Many familiar faces like John Glover, Jeff Kober and even Jeffrey Sams who still seems to be permanently regulated to small roles, but it is Olivier Gruner in a leading role that is the surprise. As J296 he really develops the role as he changes from a robot with no emotions into a "real" human being. I must say the surprise in his acting "turn" actually is more charming than just looking at Daphne and strengthens the entertainment value of the movie. Thought Olivier would grow and develop his acting and be a much bigger star based on this film. I was ready for Automatic II with a bigger budget to see if they could pull off what worked about the film again, but that film was never forthcoming.

I don't know if the film ever was released in theaters in the US or went straight to video but I was ready for Automatic II. Its about time this movie is put back in rotation for viewing on cable TV. HBO and Showtime have great original shows making them worth the subscription but they both really need to crank up the numbers of actual movies viewable each month to match the number of movies you used to be able to view on Starz each month. It would be nice if they would periodically go a little farther back and re-run an entertaining and engaging film like this after several years. It has been at least five years since I've seen it but each time I see the actor, I think about this film.

Action and Android Philosophy
nebula-3702912 December 2018
Without giving away the plot, this movie contains evil corporations, overweight bankers, character development, some plot twists, lots of fighting, friendship, morality, grenades, android kung-fu, public relations, angry proletarians, brief nudity, unethical bosses, and elevator action. What's not to like?

Dark predictable sci-fi thriller
malky12327 February 1999
This film is one of those that has you reaching for the brightness button on the remote. I'm sure that in some circumstances the Director must have been told to save on the electricity bill. Lots of sympathy for the decommisioned "'Tics" which occur during the film, but not much else worthy of note. As stated, the predictability of the film is noteworthy in itself - the fight scences, the heroine's dress, the crawl through the air vent, the finale - don't go out of your way to watch this one. See it once perhaps, and then log it away in the deep recesses.......
