Cannes — Set at the South Pole in Winter, shot largely in English but with Danish as well, featuring heavy VFX, co-produced by Hulu Japan and HBO Asia and starring “La Casa de Papel’s” Alvaro Morte and Japanese idol Tomoisha Yamashita, survival thriller “The Head” is certainly one of the biggest Spanish series set for release next year. That, these days, means something.
The subject of a Mipcom First Look session on Tuesday, “The Head” is also as signature show for The Mediapro Studio whose parent, The Mediapro Group, burst onto the high-end drama scene, co-producing “The Young Pope.”
Its fascination cuts multiple ways, says The Mediapro Studio’s Ran Tellem, who will talk at the First Look on Tuesday. One large appeal: the setting, the South Pole, during its six month winter. “I thought it was a brilliant setup to do something there in a complete darkness, complete isolation,...

Madrid — Already producing 34 scripted series, The Mediapro Studio is now entering second-phase growth, naming Laura Fernández Espeso to the newly-created post of corporate director and expanding other senior management positions to meet the market needs of one of the fastest-expanding scripted series producers in Europe.
Announcement of the appointments comes as The Mediapro Studio prepares to unleash on Mipcom banner series “The Head,” one of the biggest ever to come out of Spain, an English-language Antarctic thriller produced with Hulu Japan and HBO Asia and a sign of the ambition the Studio aims to achieve in its flagship titles.
Also coming up to completion are woman’s reawakening story “Paradise,” also a Finnish-Spanish crime thriller; coming of age story “Paraíso,” with Movistar+; Mexican women’s soccer team drama “Las Bravas,” the first scripted title announced in an alliance with Turner Latin America, and social comedy “Whatever,” made for HBO España.

On Sept. 13, the cast and crew of Mediapro’s upcoming dramatic thriller “The Head” gathered at a swanky Santa Cruz de Tenerife hotel to kick off promotional duties for this English-language series, which will wrap shooting later this month.
It was day 50 of production, and the cast had been working late, rushing to get every last shot before heading off to Iceland for one last week. Having only wrapped the previous night’s shoot less than 10 hours prior, all were in high spirits for that morning’s round of junkets with the Spanish, Japanese and English-language press, and for the set visit that then followed.
Variety was on-hand for the day’s events, and can offer the following take-aways from the visit.
Limited Series Appeal

Never has Spanish TV drama production been so vibrant.
Over the past 12 months, “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) and “Elite” became global sensations via Netflix, building on the success of previous series that demonstrated a never-seen-before appetite for Spanish originals.
Netflix is opening the doors of its first European production hub in Madrid in early April and preparing five new Spanish Originals; Movistar + aims to produce 15 series a year; HBO and Amazon are increasing production.
Meanwhile, top free-to-air TV broadcasters Mediaset España and Atresmedia are re-inventing themselves as studios, producing content for third-party operators, and taking advantage of their production expertise.
The boom is opening up more ambitious and flexible business production models, such as co-production.
“Many of our projects, from inception, have co-production partners,” says Telefonica’s Movistar + president, Sergio Oslé. “It keeps us international from the get-go and helps us distribute, and also reach some scale and share know-how.

"A gut punch of tension, horror, and dread." Vertical Entertainment has unleashed an official trailer for a film titled The Head Hunter, a medieval fantasy-action-horror thriller from director Jordan Downey. This played at the Sitges Film Festival last year under the title The Head, but I don't recall hearing much about it (good or bad). The Head Hunter is a gnarly Viking film which literally refers to a warrior who collects heads. But his collection is missing only one - the monster that killed his daughter years ago. Driven by a thirst for revenge, he travels wild expanses on horseback, using sorcery to aid in his quest. This is more fantasy than you're probably expecting, but still looks gritty and grounded. Described as a "heartbreaking fairytale with a black soul", starring Christopher Rygh and Cora Kaufman. This actually is worth a watch - check it out. Here's the official trailer...

The Head Hunter aka The Head is a medieval feature from Portugal. Part fantasy and part horror, The Head Hunter had its World Premiere at the Sitges Film Festival, in Spain. Since then, Vertical Entertainment has picked up the film for distribution in the United States. In the film, a medieval warrior protects his home and country from strange monsters and the occult. In search of revenge, this warrior hopes to slay the creature that killed his daughter. This title was directed by Jordan Downey (ThanksKilling), from a script by Kevin Stewart ("Unfriended: Dark Web"). This title is slated for an early April release, with more details below. The trailer shows some of the Head Hunter's (Christopher Rygh) anger. He has his gruesome trophy collection in his home. In search of the creature, he roams the countryside and finds what he is looking for inside a small cave, leading to a final confrontation.

Last year while attending Spain’s Sitges Film Festival, I saw an independent movie that at the time was called The Head. A masterful blend of fantasy and horror, I gushed about the film, saying it was, “…a testament to independent filmmaking” and “…overflowing with imagination and atmosphere.” Today, I’m thrilled to be able to bring […] The post Exclusive The Head Hunter Trailer Mixes Fantasy and Horror With Gruesome Effectiveness appeared first on Dread Central.

Part of the fun in attending festivals like Sitges is the experience of watching a movie without much knowledge about it and what to expect. So, before stepping inside the theatre to watch The Head, pretty much the only thing I knew about it, besides a short synopsis, was that it was the new movie from director Jordan Downey, who made his first steps into the directing business by working as an intern for none other than Wes Craven. Of course, after such a start, it's no surprise that Downey's whole career has been dedicated to the horror genre. The Head tells the story of a nameless warrior (played by Christopher Rygh) who lives alone in a stone hut and makes his living as a...

Sweden’s Dramacorp, the Patrick Nebout-Beta Film joint venture, has come on board “Cyptid,” a Swedish horror thriller series created by up-and-coming Swedish director Daniel Di Grado and French-Belgian comicbook writer Sylvain Runberg.
The 10-part half-hour series will be helmed by Di Grado, who previously directed “Alena,” the series based on Kim W. Andersson’s award winning comic which played at Sitges, and most recently directed an episode of the fantasy series “Jordskott.” Runberg, who co-created “Cyptid,” is best known for adapting the three opus of Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” into popular graphic novels and just co-wrote “Millennium: The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.”
“Cyptid” takes place in a high school located a Northern Scandinavian village in the aftermath of the horrific murder of a student. The crime reveals the presence of strange creatures lurking in the nearby lake.

Those who come from a generation that can elegiacally recall the days when the programming line-up of MTV (Music Television) not only consisted of music videos, but thought-provoking cutting edge original programing, will likely remember late-night viewings of the cable channel’s bellwether mixed-media showcase, Liquid Television. While it’s not coming back anytime soon, a nostalgic boon has just arrived, making the show’s entire run available to stream.
Indeed, Liquid Television was the crucial 1990s platform responsible for the emergence of would-be MTV hit series Beavis And Butt-Head, along with the bizarre, ultraviolent and titillating assassin series Æon Flux, which, in 2005, would be adapted as a movie starring Charlize Theron. Now, the series has been made available for consumption in its originally-aired form, thanks to the folks at Internet Archive,...

Another week is in the books here in the MTV Newsroom, and while every day is a hard-hitting sprint to get you the biggest and best stories, it feels like we went just a little bit harder this week. We were on top of Justin Bieber's movie premiere (and believe us, we're just getting warmed up), all over the unveiling of Rihanna's controversial new video for "S&M" (which continues to make waves over its extra-sexy content) and first on the scene when it was announced that "Beavis and Butt-head" were coming back to the fold (welcome back, boys — everybody missed you). And that's not even mentioning Britney Spears' album title, the break-up of the White Stripes and the continuous roller coaster ride that is "American Idol."
So before you start waiting in line for next week's premiere of "Never Say Never" or get your chili recipes together for the Super Bowl,...

On Wednesday afternoon (February 2), two amazing worlds collided. Following the announcement (care of the cast of "Skins") that legendary animated duo "Beavis and Butt-head" would be returning to the MTV airwaves some time this summer, Justin Bieber took to his Twitter feed to share his excitement with the rest of the world.
"Solid day in NYC," he wrote. "Played hoops and just went to the MTV Upfronts ... Beavis and Butthead are coming back!!!" (The tweet was something of an understatement, as Bieber also unveiled his new film "Never Say Never" and watched the New York Knicks fall to the Dallas Mavericks at Madison Square Garden.)
Bieber's enthusiasm for the duo is a little strange, especially considering that it began airing on MTV a full year before the 16-year-old Canadian singer was born. But his excitement shown through on the red carpet for the premiere of "Never Say Never."
