- A supporting character commits suicide. A 12 year old boy sees blood coming from underneath the door and finds the dead body next to a sink full of blood and a trail of blood all the way throughout the apartment.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- Many people are treated badly for being poor during the Depression era. We see the main character's father sitting on the ground unable to sell his candles door-to-door. We see the main character's brother sent away to live with relatives because "it's cheaper". It's implied he has never been away from home before. We see Mr. Sandoz, a painter, beaten up for trying to get back into his room that he was evicted from, trying to retrieve his stolen belongings. Later on this same character is seen looking forlorn and homeless.
- A woman has tuberculosis and is sent to a sanitarium.
- A boy is abandoned by his parents and nearly dies.
- A girl has a seizure in front of a boy and scares him.
