Box Office: Evil Dead Set For $26M; G.I. Joe: Retaliation Muscles Its Way To #2

1 hour ago | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Fede Alvarez's remake of Evil Dead has continued to exceed expectations as it easily took the top spot in North America with an impressive three day total of $26 million. That's far beyond many initial estimates and a fantastic start for a movie which cost only $17 million to produce. It was thought that Jurassic Park 3D would take second place, but G.I. Joe: Retaliation has muscled its way into that position with an admirable $20.7 million. That takes the sequel's current domestic cume to over $86 million! The 3D re-release (which was overseen by Steven Spielberg himself) dropped to #4 and has taken a predicted total of $18.7 million. You can read my review of Evil Dead by clicking Here and G.I. Joe: Retaliation by clicking Here. Many thanks to Deadline for the following figures. 1. Evil Dead (FilmDistrict/Tristar/Sony) New [Runs 3,025] R Friday $11.9M, Saturday $9.1M, Weekend $26.M 2. G.I. Evil Dead Alive at Friday Box Office with $11.9 Million Opening Day

13 hours ago | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Columbia TriStar's remake of Evil Dead was propelled by a wave of positive reviews and promises of excessive gore to a strong opening day at the North American box office. Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park 3D also opening strong in second place, while last weekend's champ G.I. Joe: Retaliation slipped to third.

Evil Dead bowed at 3,025 locations to the tune of $11.9 million during its first 24 hours of release. With a production budget estimated at only $17 million, the remake of Sam Raimi's classic with Raimi and Bruce Campbell serving as producers will easily top $20 million through Sunday, which also happens to be more than the previous three Evil Dead films made at the box office combined during their theatrical runs. Somewhere between $25 and $30 million seems a safe bet for Evil Dead's opening weekend.

'Jurassic Park': A drinking game 65 million beers in the making

17 hours ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

There was a period of my life when I was watching Jurassic Park on practically a weekly basis. It was the year after graduating from college, and my friends and I had a tradition of popping in the DVD whenever we couldn’t think of anything else to do — which was admittedly often. At one point, we managed to watch the movie more than a dozen times in the course of a single month and it got to the level that we were quoting the entire movie along with it like some crazed cult. Naturally, we also developed a drinking »

'Evil Dead' scares up big Friday box office numbers

18 hours ago | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

The remake of "Evil Dead" brought horror fans out in force on Friday (April 5), snagging the top box-office spot in the process.

The movie, produced by original "Evil Dead" director and star Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, earned $11.9 million on Friday (including $1.8 million from late-night shows on Thursday). It's now on pace to make $25 million or more for the weekend, ahead of initial projections of around $20 million.

The 3D rerelease of "Jurassic Park" took second place Friday with an estimated $7 million haul. That's in line with what forecasters were predicting and should put it on par with the $17.3 million "Titanic 3D" made on the same weekend last year.

Last weekend's top movies, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" ($6.7 million) and "The Croods" ($5.8 million), dropped to third and fourth on Friday. "Tyler Perry's Temptation" rounds out the Top 5 with $3.4 million.  »

Roger Ebert, ‘Evil Dead,’ Wolverine and ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Star in the Top 10 Movie Stories of the Week

19 hours ago | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

What started out with a bunch of foolish pranks and fun became a very sad week for the world of movie lovers. It’s terrible to lose any one of us, and surely many cinephiles die by the day, but this guy was among the biggest and most important. As it turns out, this week’s Reject Recap seems more filled with bad stories than good. Of course, it’s a week in which we saw a lot of recycling and — appropriately for the holiday that fell recently — resurrection of properties including Jurassic Park, Evil Dead and Finding Nemo. Looking over the list of the ten big stories, it’s a pretty disappointing time for us in general. Well, it’s not disappointing as a reader, as we hosted a bunch of great writing this week and also found some notable features by friends at other sites. Box office update: 'Evil Dead scares up $10.1 million on Friday

19 hours ago | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

The box office was alive thanks to the Evil Dead on Friday. The $17 million horror remake, from TriStar, FilmDistrict, and Ghost House took in a terrific $10.1 million on its debut Friday — the same amount that fellow horror release Mama earned in its first 24 hours en route to a $28.4 million weekend earlier this year. Evil Dead will likely be more frontloaded than that film due to built-in anticipation from fans of the 1981 original, but it could still earn about $27 million over the Friday-to-Sunday period.

Of course, Sony reported that Evil Dead earned $11.9 million on Friday, explaining that that number was “including Thursday late shows. »

From 3,025 locations, the horror remake earned an estimated $10.1 million on Friday - including $1.8 million from its Thursday 10 pm and midnight screenings. Evil Dead will fall short of recent genre remakes like Friday the 13th ($40.9 million); but the reboot of the 1983 cult-classic is already running ahead of projections and could realize as much as $28 million through Sunday. Jurassic Park 3D, the latest blockbuster to receive a digital makeover, took in a more modest $7 million from 2,771 locations. Though good enough for Friday’s second spot, the re-release is expected to fall behind G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Croods on the weekend chart. Tribeca, Maker Studios Creators Get Cinematic On ‘The Picture Show’

19 hours ago | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

During last year's Digital Content Newfronts, Robert DeNiro's Tribeca Enterprises venture announced a partnership with Maker Studios. After almost one year of waiting, that channel has finally arrived in the form of The Picture Show, which features Maker talent and a cinematic focus. The first video on the channel features a pair of Maker Studios creators, Mary Doodles and Dante Cimadamore of Give Me Motion. Mary uses her elite stop-motion sketch skills to create a huge collage of the history of film, while Dante drops a bumpin' track on top of the video. Mary and Dante's guest appearance, however, is just an appetizer. The real focus of The Picture Show is movie-focused comedy, as evidenced by the debut episode of the channel's first original series, Remix the Movies. Box Office: ‘Evil Dead’ Looks Lively With $12 Million Friday Haul

20 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Sony’s “Evil Dead,” a remake that raises Sam Raimi’s 1981 original from its cult classic grave, is rising slightly higher than expectations this weekend. “Evil Dead” earned $11.9 million Friday, with a three-day haul of around $27 million projected.

The TriStar, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Productions release got off to a strong start against players with a little broader appeal this frame, including Universal’s “Jurassic Park” 3D rerelease and Fox-DreamWorks Animations “The Croods.” Friday will almost definitely be the scarer’s strongest day, with that early jump quite certainly enough positioning the film to win the weekend.

Behind it, “Jurassic Park” is falling tightly in line with expectations that were a little unsure heading into the weekend. The actioner took $7 million Friday for second, and will likely land in the high teens through Sunday as expected, but a pair of strong holdovers are expected to muscle it down to fourth place in that time. »

Fede Alvarez directs the film starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci and Elizabeth Blackmore, which looks to coin around $27 million over the weekend. Total domestic cume's now at $71.9 million, and overseas the film starring Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis, has made $80 million. Poll: Which Jurassic Park character is your favourite?

20 hours ago | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

It’s been 20 years since Jurassic Park was released in theatres which should have given you plenty of time to memorize lines, yell at Dr. Alan Grant to drive faster or tell Martin Ferrero the unlucky lawyer that a bathroom stall probably isn’t the best place to hide from an hungry T-Rex. Not to name names or point any fingers, but maybe you’ve been quoting Dr. Ian Malcolm’s chaos theory since 1993 and helping populate Jeff Goldblum memes and fan art on Tumblr for which the world wide web is eternally grateful for.

Now that you’ve had 20 years to decide which character is your favourite, it’s time to cast your vote. Who’s your favourite Jurassic Park character? Devious Dennis Nedry or Mr. Jurassic Park himself, John Hammond? The gang of Raptors in the kitchen or the poor sacrificial goat?

Cast you vote on the next page! »

Both Evil Dead And Jurassic Park 3D Bring In Big Friday Box Office

21 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The huge blockbuster opening this weekend was made 20 years ago, and the horror film is a remake of a classic from the 80s, but the box office is humming as if both of them were brand new. According to the early numbers at Deadline, both Jurassic Park 3D and Evil Dead had huge Fridays, with Evil Dead at the head of the pack. The horror remake from director Fede Alvarez made $11.5 million on Friday, setting it up for an estimated $27 million weekend and an easy first place. Right behind it was the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park, already one of the biggest blockbusters in history. The original opened to $47 million in 1993, but the 3D re-release of course won't get quite that close-- it made $7 million on Friday and is estimated for a $18 million weekend. The rest of the top 10 is rounded out by holdovers, with G.I. Joe: Retaliation holding »

Director Profile: Steven Spielberg

In what will hopefully be the first in a series on my favorite directors, this profile of Steven Spielberg will attempt to give a brief introduction into his career, memorable films, filmmaking technique, themes, critical reception, and his impact on the film industry, as well as look at his upcoming films.

Regardless of your opinion of him, Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation, influencing many modern directors and changing the way Hollywood makes movies. Spielberg’s films remain very distinctive, as few filmmakers possess both his technical abilities and his flair for engaging storytelling and a number of unique characteristics run through his films.

Spielberg has enjoyed one of the most prolific careers of any major filmmaker, directing 27 feature films, most of which have received considerable critical and commercial acclaim. Spielberg has been praised for his natural directorial ability, having displayed considerable skill »
