Renny Harlin Takes Val Kilmer and Emmanuelle Chriqui to Georgia

28 October 2009 8:21 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We wrote a couple months ago about Renny Harlin's upcoming film about the 2008 conflict between Georgia and Russia. Now, as then, I'm interested in the film to see if Harlin can take what made a few of his films really entertaining (I'm thinking of Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea and The Long Kiss Goodnight) and apply it to something that isn't so flashy. Can he come up with a film that's actually good? It's been a while. Today he's got some of the cast lined up for the picture, which we now know will be called simply Georgia. Val Kilmer and Entourage's Emmanuelle Chriqui are the leads in the film, says THR. Kilmer is a journalist covering the conflict; Chriqui is a Georgian grad student who becomes 'entangled' with Kilmer and his cameraman. We'd previously known that the film is about "an American journalist and his cameraman who arrive »

Emmanuelle Chriqui Heads To Georgia

28 October 2009 12:06 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The dust may still be settling on Russia's conflict with Georgia, but Renny Harlin isn't messing about, with Georgia, his (anti)war movie set during the war, picking up another cast member in the shapely form of Emmanuelle Chriqui. Chriqui, best known as Eric's girlfriend Sloan in Entourage, will play a local woman who becomes entangled with an American journalist (Val Kilmer) and cameraman assigned to cover Georgia's 2008 assault on the Russian-backed Republic of South Ossetia. Andy Garcia will play Georgia president Mikheil Saakashvili. It's political sensitive terrain - the war left more than 100,000 homeless and left deep rifts between the two countries - so it will no doubt call on a different side to the Harlin oeuvre. As executive producer Michael Flannigan told Georgian television: "Our main concern was to show war as a bad thing. We had an opportunity to make a really anti-war film." In other words, »

Emmanuelle Chriqui Joins Val Kilmer in Renny Harlin’s Georgia

27 October 2009 11:19 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Before we continue, Renny Harlin’s upcoming film “Georgia” is not about The Peach State and the tale how Coca-Cola will one day flow out of our drinking fountains.  “Georgia” is based on last year’s conflict between Russia and the country of Georgia.  THR reports that hottie/red-carpet eye candy Emmanuelle Chriqui will play opposite Val Kilmer in the drama about an American journalist (Kilmer) and his cameraman caught in the crossfire and a Georgia native (Chriqui) and doctoral student who becomes entangled with them.

Chriqui is best known for her role on “Entourage” playing the love interest of Kevin Connolly’s character, Eric.  Since “Entourage’ is a fantasy, I believe the most recent episode featured a tearful goodbye between them before Eric had to go and drop the The One Ring into Mount Doom.  Kilmer has appeared in numerous roles but he has a lifetime free pass from »

Emmanuelle Chriqui and Val Kilmer Head to Georgia for Renny Harlin

27 October 2009 9:10 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It may be hard to believe now, but once upon a time Renny Harlin was an in-demand action movie director, having directed hits like “Die Hard 2″, “Cliffhanger”, and “The Long Kiss Goodnight”. More recently, not so much. Harlin hasn’t exactly had the best of resumes in the last few years, with junk like “The Covenant” and “12 Rounds” to his credit. He’s looking to rise from direct-to-dvd hell (and bad movies starring wrestlers) with the kinda-current themed “Georgia”, a war drama that will be set in the country of Georgia and star Val Kilmer as a journalist covering the recent Russia-Georgia conflict. “Entourage” star Emmanuelle Chriqui (who can also be seen in the delightful sounding “Women in Trouble”) has now been added to the cast as a Georgian native and doctoral student who becomes tangled up with Kilmer and his cameraman during the event. Harlin will produce and direct the movie, »

Sylvester Stallone Has A "Death Wish" Plus, He Really, Really Wants Edgar Allan Poe!

3 October 2009 11:48 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Sylvester Stallone is all over the pop culture landscape. The actor-director is starting to tease us with his upcoming "The Expendables" and he's also working on the pre-production for "Rambo 5."

But now, he revealed to Empire Online, that he wanted to remake the Charles Bronson masterpiece, "Death Wish." It's the original vigilante movie from the 70s.

"I'm thinking about it," Stallone told Empire. "It's a classic morality tale, where you take a civilised man and take away everything that matters to him so he becomes primitive again."

But wait, there's more! Stallone is not stopping with "Death Wish" for all his film wishes. He also has a passion for American Gothic writer Edgar Allan Poe. Sly wants his pit and pendulum too :happy

Although Stallone said he would not be playing the author (he died at 39), he thinks an autobiographical film about Poe is bound to come.

When asked about the planned "Cliffhanger" remake, »

Stallone Still Pushing 'Poe'

3 October 2009 5:52 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

In a wide-ranging interview about his upcoming projects, Sylvester Stallone told Empire about plans for his Death Wish remake, the Cliffhanger update (he says he's got nothing to do with it), and perhaps most interestingly, a bio-pic about Edgar Allan Poe.

You can read about the other projects at Empire, but Stallone says he's serious about the Poe movie and that it is moving forward. "Of course, I'm not playing Poe," cautions the filmmaker you wouldn't pick out of a line-up of directors to make such a movie.

"'Yo, Poe!' It won't work," Stallone jokes about himself in the starring role. "It'll be some young actor because he dies at 39, but it's gonna happen." »

Sylvester Stallone Wants 'Death Wish' Remake

2 October 2009 2:41 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Sylvester Stallone isn't done yet with action movies. Having two forthcoming actioners on his sleeves, "The Expendables" and "Rambo V: The Savage Hunt", the 63-year-old admitted to Empire that he has his eye on "Death Wish", the remake to the 1970's exploitation film of the same name.

"I'm thinking about it," Sly opened up. "It's a classic morality tale, where you take a civilized man and take away everything that matters to him so he becomes primitive again." He continued, "The story's been done many times, and when it's done well, it's an emotionally engaging film. The trouble with remakes is that people fall in love with the original. It's like peanut butter. If you try to change the taste of peanut butter, you're in trouble."

Aside from his potential involvement in the project, the actor turned filmmaker also talked about a possible "Cliffhanger" sequel. "I hear they're gonna remake it, »

Sylvester Stallone Has a Death Wish, Plus Cliffhanger Sequel?

1 October 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

There are two action stars who are probably immortal. One is now the Governor of Caliornia and he doesn't like "economic girly-men" while the other is still very much an action star. His name is Sylvester Stallone. With his next venture The Expendables not too far off (set for release next August) and yet another sequel in the Rambo series on the horizon as well, Stallone isn't showing any signs of slowing down. He recently took the time to talk to Empire about the possibility of his involvement in a remake of the 1970's exploitation film Death Wish, potentially a sequel to Cliffhanger, and the status of the biopic about poet Edgar Allen Poe. First on the possible remake of the Charles Bronson action-crime-drama Death Wish, Stallone said: "I'm thinking about it. Stallone Growls about the Death Wish Remake, the Cliffhanger Remake, and Some Guy Name Poe

1 October 2009 11:12 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

According to Sylvester Stallone, he’s not really doing a “Death Wish” remake. Yet. He’s thinking about it, though, so there are some legitimacy to all those rumors that had Stallone going all vigilante on us. And then there’s that “Cliffhanger” remake. Stallone says to forget about him coming on board. In fact, he sounds practically sad they’re remaking one of his movies. In regards to “Death Wish”, Stallone tells Empire: “I’m thinking about it. It’s a classic morality tale, where you take a civilised man and take away everything that matters to him so he becomes primitive again.” He’s thinking about it, but he sounds like he’s leaning against doing it. I don’t know, it might be interesting to see him in the vigilante role. Of course, it would look odd if this beefy, bulky guy decided to become a killer. »

Renny Harlin Tackles Russian-Georgia Conflict

4 August 2009 9:09 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

As American filmmakers have struggled, and largely failed, to tell stories about the ongoing wars in the Middle East, they've ignored rich cinematic material in other wars, in other countries. Not Renny Harlin! The filmmaker known for schlocky 90s action movies like Cliffhanger and Deep Blue Sea is turning his attention to the conflict between Russia and neighboring nation Georgia, a conflict that turned into outright war in 2008 and continues to seethe to this day. Harlin didn't give Variety too many details about the film he's planning, other than saying he's shooting on a small budget and will be filming near the area where the armed conflict occurred. "When I got this script two weeks ago, it was exactly what I had been looking for, a great human story, with tragic, serious overtones. I saw it as my opportunity to use my experience in action films to tell the story »

"I want to make a film that says something about the human condition, and even if only a few people see this and feel its impact and its antiwar message, then I will have done something that's important and I will be proud of it," The renowned popcorn filmmaker told the trade.

He's known for popcorn blockbusters like Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, and The Long Kiss Goodnight, but Renny Harlin's next film is an untitled drama based on the 2008 South Ossetia war.The five-day war saw Georgia launching a large-scale military assault on the Russian-backed Republic of South Ossetia: an internationally unrecognised regional government resulting from the Georgian / Ossetian conflict of 1991-2.Russia responded with some force, but recognised South Ossetia's independence in late August 2008, and had officially withdrawn by October, although tensions remain.According to Variety, Harlin has been waiting to get his teeth into this kind of story for a while. The Finnish director was recently attached to a biopic of his countryman Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim, the leader of Finland's 1939 revolt against Russia, but funding fell through. "I've waited a long time to find something with substance and reality," says Harlin. Renny Harlin to Direct Untitled Russia-Georgia Conflict Drama

3 August 2009 7:29 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Renny Harlin will direct an untitled drama based on actual events that took place during the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict, according to Variety.

The short war began Aug. 8, 2008, when Georgian forces attacked the border territory in South Ossetia. Russia recognized the territory's independence and subsequently routed Georgian forces; tensions have remained high ever since.

Harlin will shoot the film in areas near the conflict. Plot specifics are being kept under wraps for security reasons, but the drama involves an American journalist and his cameraman who get caught in the crossfire in Georgia and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial journalists.

The subject matter is a decided departure for the Finnish-born director, who is best known for helming popcorn thrillers like Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Cliffhanger and Deep Blue Sea. Turns out Harlin's a closet aficionado of arthouse films, and he said he has waited his whole »

'G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra' Reviewed In The UK And A 'District 9' Interview In Today's Dailies -- 8/3/09

3 August 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

All sorts of news flying around the web today. Some of this would have run earlier on the blog, had it not been for a midday technical Snafu. Here's a round-up of what we missed:

-- I don't know if it's the "first" to hit the web (I'm pretty sure it's not), but IGN UK have posted their review of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." It's mostly high praise for Stephen Sommers' high-energy action flick, and I couldn't be more pleased. I'd been feeling uneasy about "Joe" in recent months, but all of those fears were literally Blown The Eff Up when I saw the movie myself this past weekend. (IGN UK)

-- "Monster Squad" director Fred Dekker revealed at a weekend screening of his family-friendly classic that he's currently hard at work on a script for "Cliffhanger 2." For those who don't recall, "Cliffhanger" stars Sylvester Stallone »

Monster Squad’s Fred Dekker Writing Cliffhanger Reboot/Sequel?

3 August 2009 11:37 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Back in May, StudioCanal announced that they would be teaming with Neal Moritz's Original Films to reboot Cliffhanger. At the time, not much was known about the project aside from the fact that it would be big budget and would center on a group of young climbers on "multiple cliff-face locations." At the time, Moritz said that they were searching for a screenwriter, and hoping to begin production in 2010. Our friends at FirstShowing might have come across a scoop regarding the film's scribe. While attending a Santa Monica screening of The Monster Squad, director Fred Dekker revealed that he is "currently writing Cliffhanger 2." It is interesting that he referred to the project as "Cliffhanger 2" and not a remake or reboot of Cliffhanger. Is it possible that the story has Sylvester Stallone set to return as Gabe Walker? Or are we reading too much into a quick comment. Probably ... »

For the record can I just say, holy crap! Now, that I've moved on from the initial shock I can tell you that we have a Cliffhanger 2 coming. Now back in May it was announced that Cliffhanger was getting the good ol' reboot. Now let's travel backwards, in 1993 I was 9, Janine Turner was grade A top choice meat, and Sylvester Stallone was still completely capable of making a box office hit. As we travel forwards, I'm nearly 25, Janine Turner has kept well, and Stallone is Stallone. Needless... »

'Cliffhanger' Sequel Being Penned?

2 August 2009 9:25 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The folks over at FirstShowing recently attended a screening of the 1987 film Monster Squad at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, and during a Q&A session with director Fred Dekker and writer Shane Black at the end of the film, some interesting info was revealed concerning a sequel to the 1993 film Cliffhanger.

Sequel, you say? Yep, read on...

"I'm currently writing Cliffhanger 2," Dekker stated when asked what he was working on right now.

Last May it was reported that StudioCanal had teamed up with producer Neal Moritz to reboot Sylvester Stallone's film. The idea then was to turn it into a big-budget thriller that would center on a new group of young climbers.

At the time, Moritz was looking for a writer with the intention of having the new 'Cliffhanger' before the cameras by 2010. Dekker is apparently now the writer involved, but from his comment above »
