Bioware Releases Impressive Cast List for Mass Effect 2

14 December 2009 11:27 PM, PST | GameRant | See recent GameRant news »

Bioware is one company that takes its voiceover work seriously. For Star Wars: The Old Republic, Bioware hired over 100 actors to voice over 40 novels worth of written material. And now Bioware has announced that it has hired several top-notch voice actors for the heavily-anticipated sci-fi sequel, Mass Effect 2.

Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of Bioware and Group General Manager of the RPG/Mmo Group of EA, reasoned that,

“[e]motionally engaging narrative is a key design pillar for Bioware, and the top-notch voice talent in Mass Effect 2 helps drive this goal. Credible, powerful personalities are vital to delivering a compelling story experience in Bioware’s games, and we have assembled an amazing ensemble cast that surpasses the very high bar set in the original Mass Effect!”

Part 3: From Ben Elton to L Ron Hubbard

Ben Elton Turned rock history into a 'jukebox musical' cash cow

"The Matrix meets the Arthurian legend meets Terminator 2," was how Ben Elton hilariously described his Queen musical when it debuted in 2002. A more honest commentator might have pegged We Will Rock You as being a bit like Suzi Quatro directing a particularly stupid episode of Deep Space Nine using a cast entirely drawn from the Camden branch of Fresh & Wild. By blowing off any regard for plot, cliche or character arc, Elton took the genteel traditions of musical theatre and rock's outsider chic, and served them up as a mindless Mor smoothie. Marketing men realised there were plenty more theatregoers too old to rock'n'roll, yet too dumb for Sondheim. And so, as Tonight's The Night et al followed the idiot-proof recipe drawn up by Wwry and its close predecessor, Mamma Mia! »

Reed’s Bargain Bin: Dark Assassin / The Fifth Commandment

11 December 2009 6:36 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. For those who think that the best martial arts films are the ones that star actual martial artists, I present to you two films that defy this categorization: Dark Assassin (2006) and The Fifth Commandment (2008). I wasn’t even going to bother reviewing these two films, but after watching the behind-the-scenes documentaries on each DVD, I found out that much effort and perseverance were involved in getting these films made. So I thought I would at least offer these films some recognition even though I won’t have many good things to say about them. However, discussing these films might be of some interest. And with the recent release of Ninja Assassin, I thought there might be an interest in assassin movies. These »

Ross McCall: The Everyday Guy Amidst the L.A. Insanity of "Crash"

(Ross McCall and Eric Roberts, left, in "Crash.")

By Terry Keefe

(This article is currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)

It isn’t necessarily great news for an actor to hear that the television series they’ve been starring in is going to be “retooled” in its second season. Your character can be retooled right out the door. Or, it can develop significantly. The latter has fortunately been the case for actor Ross McCall, who has been playing Kenny Battalgia on “Crash” for both of its two seasons. Earlier in the year, veteran producer and writer Ira Steven Behr (“Deep Space Nine”) was brought on as the new show runner, and he merged Kenny’s storyline with that of billionaire Seth Blanchard, the billionaire played by Eric Roberts in the new season, and the major plot focus. Blanchard has a spiritual reawakening which causes him to forgo the building of a new L. »

Oprah's Leap From Series To Network Should Inspire These Five Shows To Follow Her Lead

20 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Queen of Daytime Television is dethroning herself. On September 9, 2011, Oprah Winfrey will take her last bow as the host of the Oprah Winfrey Show, almost 25 years to the day since the program initially launched.

But Oprah's televised days are far from over, as the media mogul plans on launching the Oprah Winfrey Network — appropriately abbreviated as Own — in early 2011. Once her show ends, she'll focus much of her energy on the brand new network.

Honestly, it's a pretty brilliant career move. In fact, it's one that several television franchises could probably follow with great success — or, at least, hilarious results. Following Oprah's move from television host to network overlord, I think these five franchises could take a similar leap from series to channel.

'Star Trek 2': Casting Khan...why couldn't it be a woman?

18 November 2009 1:08 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Oh, how the internets loves its casting rumors. Today, the nugget that caught my eye came from comingsoon.net, who not only floated the idea of Khan Noonien Singh being the villain in the next Star Trek flick, but that -- "if they started filming today" -- Lost's Nestor Carbonell would be the deep-sleeping warlord who harries Kirk and Co. Of course, they aren't filming today, and comingsoon.net admitted as much, but it got me thinking: If they are gonna do Khan -- and I'm not convinced they should -- who should play the part? My answer: a woman. »

As “Conan” gets closer to making his return to the big screen, two of the top FX alumni from Zack Snyder’s “300” adaptation have joined the project.

Shaun Smith has signed on as a creature designer on “Conan” and Scott Wheeler will head up the makeup department. In addition to their time on “300”, Smith created makeup FX for “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “The Forbidden Kingdom” while Wheeler has worked extensively on two “Star Trek” movies, “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and Joss Whedon’s upcoming film “The Cabin in the Woods.”

"As you might expect I really can't say much except it looks really cool and we are excited to be a part of it," Smith related to Mania.com. “Conan” is expected to begin filming in Bulgaria next February.

The Weekly Geek: Could Captain Janeway "Trek" Again?

5 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Star Trek Voyager fans, prepare to have your heart rates accelerated to warp speed. Kate Mulgrew, the actress who portrayed the wonderful, dynamic, possibly lesbionic Captain Kathryn Janeway, has expressed an interest in appearing in a new Star Trek film. The Geek Files blog has the scoop:

Asked by Sci Fi Now if she'd consider a role in the new films, she said: "I would, I'd love to return to Janeway. I'd love to do her in a movie. I think he'd be wise to do it, don't you? He should get me and Picard in there. It's a brilliant idea.”

The latest Star Trek film covered its tracks in re-launching the “original” series with Kirk, Spock and the gang — but it also allowed for the possibility for other characters in the universe to appear. With a touch of creative sci-fi imagining, Picard and Janeway could totally make cameos.

Costumes, games, movies and Star Trek? Its Expo time!

27 October 2009 5:26 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

If you missed the McM Expo on the 24th and 25th of October, shame on you. The movie, comic and media exposition 5000 rocked the Excel centre in London's Docklands. Again. This year's turnout was, well, normal really and the show itself packed in more movie, media and comic titillation than an entire interweb. Shows like this happen all the time, all over the world and while they're full of memorabilia merchants and obscure comic book artist signing their obscure comic books, there's also interesting things on show like new video games and celebrities from old TV shows like Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Oh, DS9, we miss thou. But are Terry Farrell and Nicole De Boer really all that? Well, no. Not unless you're me and you'd always wanted to meet them. Even though I didn't. I was in the same room as them! Which, really, is very, very rubbish. »

Terilynn's Trek: Thoughts On Star Trek Cruise, 'Star Trek Xii'

20 October 2009 2:57 PM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Could the announced delay of new film actually be a good sign? I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time in airport bars or airline clubs. The good part about that happenstance is the fact that I can whip out the laptop and begin to type my column when I tend to get what I call .The Wave.. "The Wave" is that brainload of ideas and stuff that sometimes builds up and then begs to be let out. As some of you know, The Husband and I participated in the Star Trek Cruise organized by StarTrekCruise.com, and attended by several Trek celebrities from "Star Trek: Voyager," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Enterprise" . specifically, Chase Masterson, Garrett Wang, Anthony Montgomery and Gary Graham. And the Next 'Star Trek' Movie Villain Is...

18 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Everybody's asking the question: "Who's going to serve as the villain or villains in the sequel to last summer's Star Trek?" Now that we're in an alternate Trek timeline, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are free to tell stories that incorporate familiar faces but combine them in new and interesting ways.

Which got us thinking: who's likely to make the short list, and what sort of possible stories/combinations might we see? Will the filmmakers choose to go the route of borrowing once more from canon...or will they elect to craft an entirely new story with entirely new antagonists?

Since new antagonists are impossible to predict, we decided to look to the original canon and have offered a list of possible villains from which Orci and Kurtzman could choose. We've divided the categories up into four groups:

The Heavy Hitters

The Middleweight Contenders

The Individual Narcissists

A First Look At Syfy's 'Alice'

10 October 2009 12:41 PM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Yeah, Tim Burton is making his version of "Alice in Wonderland," but it's nothing like what Syfy is putting together. And Burton doesn't have both Kathy Bates and Matt Frewer. The new event will air Dec. 6-7 on Syfy, following the tradition of past end-of-the-year specials, including "Tin Man." Many, many years after an Alice first disrupted Wonderland and the House of Cards, a new Alice makes her way into the new dimension, now played by Caterina Scorsone. She meets many of the classic characters, including the Queen of Hearts (Bates), the White Knight (Frewer), Caterpillar (Harry Dean Stanton), and special appearances by "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's" Colm Meaney as the KIng of Hearts and Alessandro Juliani from "Battlestar Galactica" as the 9 of Clubs. TV Recap: ‘Flash Forward’ Season 1, Episode 3

As a new feature here on The Flickcast, Dave Press, who normally does our comic book recommendations, will be doing recaps of some of our favorite TV shows. Enjoy — Ed

The new Lost clone brought to us by Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer and Star Trek Deep Space Nine creator Brannon Braga is actually better than Lost. Which is really not hard to do. You know the premise: the entire planet blacks out for 137 seconds and everyone sees their individual futures for the date of April 29, 2010.

Joseph Fiennes, Shakespeare himself from the Oscar winning Best Picture Shakespeare in Love, leads a team of FBI agents that includes Seth McFarlane and “New Sulu” John Cho, to investigate the blackouts.

The first episode starts with Fiennes and his team encountering their blackouts. Fiennes, in his blackout, sees his board  in his office with various random and completely ridiculous names and numbers »

Blu-Ray Review: See ‘Star Trek’ in a New Way With HD Season Two

7 October 2009 7:26 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – While you count the days until the beloved reboot of “Star Trek” hits Blu-Ray and DVD on November 17th, new and old fans should check back in with the original crew of the Enterprise in Paramount’s excellent 7-disc HD set, bursting with not only dozens of special features but enhanced visual effects and audio. This season of “Star Trek” has never looked like this.

And I’m not sure it ever should have. Before getting into the meat of this excellent set, the main issue surrounding these remastered classic episodes of television is that the effects have been dragged kicking and screaming into the new millenium. Even the opening credits have been enhanced, as the cheap model of the Enterprise has been replaced by, well, kind of cheap CGI of the Enterprise.

Star Trek: The Original Series: Season 2 was released on Blu-Ray on September 22nd, 2009.

Review: 'Stargate Universe' - 'Air'

24 September 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

To paraphrase an advertising slogan used for the reboot of another venerable science fiction franchise earlier this year, Sgu: Stargate Universe is not your father’s Stargate. Unlike J.J. Abrams Star Trek, of course, Stargate Universe is more of a rerouting than a reboot. Nonetheless, it is distinctly different from the two series that preceded it in the Stargate franchise, Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Sgu is a darker, more adult space opera.

For the benefit of those not in the know, the Stargate saga began with a 1994 theatrical film of that name featuring Kurt Russell and James Spader.  The movie was subsequently adapted into a series, Stargate Sg-1, with Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks taking on the Russell and Spader roles (Colonel Jack O'Neil and Daniel Jackson, respectively). Sg-1 was the name of a four-person team of soldiers and scientists that also included Amanda Tapping's Samantha Carter »

TV Watchtower: The Wondrous World Of Jane Espenson

17 September 2009 12:42 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Once upon a time there was a yet undiscovered television writer that was plucked from obscurity by a science-fiction king and given a prestigious place in his royal court. And so began the magical television career of Jane Espenson. Prior to joining the Whedonverse, Espenson worked sporadically during the mid-1990s here and there on such shows as .Monty,. .Ellen,. .Dinosaurs,. and .Nowhere Man.. It could be said that Ronald D. Moore (creator and writer of .Battlestar Galactica.) discovered Espenson when she was hired in 1996 to write an episode of .Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.. But, in truth, it was not until a decade later that Moore re-discovered Espenson.s incredible writing and producing talents. The credit of discovery of this gem in the rough was actually Joss Whedon, who took »
