  • The character "Tom Andersen" is the unrefined version of "Hank Hill", the central character of Mike Judge's other show, "King of the Hill" (1997).

  • Beavis's birthday is 28 October 1979.

  • Beavis and Butt-Head attend Highland High School. Their high school is loosely based on Highland High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where creator Mike Judge grew up.

  • Beavis's laugh was inspired by that of a "nerdy straight-A student" Mike Judge knew from school. The student would sit in the front of class and laugh with a grunt while biting his lip.

  • The logo for Burger World, the fast food establishment at which Beavis and Butt-Head are employed, is just the McDonalds "golden arch" logo upside down.

  • The name "Burger World" was taken from the movie UHF (1989).

  • Foothill High School in Henderson, Nevada was originally going to be called Highland High School prior to its completion. However the name was changed during production to avoid comparisons to the show.

  • On the TV series, the boys wear AC/DC and Metallica shirts. But for legal reasons, the captions are changed in most show memorabilia (including DVD cover art). The altered shirts say "Skull" and "Death Rock."

  • The duo was named after two real people. While going to college, creator Mike Judge lived next door to a destructive, unsupervised 12 year-old who called himself "Iron Butt", as he claimed to feel no pain after challenging others to kick him hard in the rear. One of this boy's friends was nicknamed "Butt-head" by Mike Judge and his classmates. There was another boy who lived a few blocks away named Bobby Beavis, though Judge says that he was absolutely nothing like the character.

  • During a 1993 U.S. Senate hearing on violence in television, Sen. Ernest F. Hollings famously referred to Beavis and Butt-Head as "Buffcoat and Beaver." The error was mocked in the episode, "Beavis and Butt-Head: Pool Toys (#4.14)" (1994).
