After years in the industry, Brendan Fraser was awarded an Oscar in 2023, recognizing the actor’s exceptional acting chops. In recognition of his role as Charlie in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, the American-Canadian actor, 55, received his first Academy Award for Best Actor. He was the first Canadian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his starring role as an obese gay man, which brought him critical acclaim and many other honors.

The Dunkin’ Super Bowl Lviii commercial starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Tom Brady as part of an ultimate boyband dubbed ‘The DunKings’ became the talk of the town after its airing during the big game.
The ad sees the Argo alum and his newly-formed supergroup storm into Jennifer Lopez’s studio donning pink and orange tracksuits. They bust into some sick moves, and show off their musical chops with an original pop track, albeit to Matt Damon’s reluctance, who appeared to be second-guessing everything that led up to this moment.
Ben Affleck’s Dunkin’ Spot aired during Super Bowl Lviii
More comedic sequences ensue, but at the very end, we see Affleck and Damon walk side-by-side out of the studio as the latter says, “Remember how I said I would do anything for you? This is anything.” Turns out, this moment wasn’t even scripted!

Matt Damon was one of many actors who admired Taxi Driver star Robert De Niro. But he once joked that Raging Bull made him question his admiration for the actor for a funny reason.
Why Matt Damon once joked he hated seeing Robert De Niro gain weight in ‘Raging Bull’ Robert De Niro and Matt Damon | George Pimentel/WireImage
Damon knows what it’s like to change his physique for a film role. He’s been experimenting with his body for movies since before hitting his stride with Good Will Hunting. He famously jeopardized his health after losing 50 pounds for Courage Under Fire. But for his 2009 feature The Informant, Damon was required to take the opposite approach to his body. Instead of losing weight, he gained weight to fit the large physique of his character. It was also a much more enjoyable process, as he was able to eat whatever he wanted.

Oscar winner Matt Damon has been one of Hollywood’s most reliable leading men for over two decades. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 23 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Though Damon and his childhood friend Ben Affleck became famous by writing their own ticket to fame and fortune with “Good Will Hunting” (1997), the pair had been acting for years before that film became an art house hit, even appearing together in “School Ties” (1992). But it was by returning to their native Boston to tell the inspirational story about a secret math genius (Damon) that put them on the map, winning them an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and bringing Damon his first Best Actor nomination.

It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.
Before the era of televised paranormal investigators like Zak Bagans of "Ghost Adventures" or "Kindred Spirits" stars Amy Bruni and Adam Berry, there were Ed and Lorraine Warren. Ed was a professed demonologist, while...

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck might be two of Hollywood’s biggest actors, but they’ve also been close friends for years. The two A-listers have known each other since they were young kids, both growing up in the same Massachusetts town and having a similar interest in acting. These days, the two remain close — here’s a complete look at the duo’s longtime friendship.

Damon and Affleck are two years apart, with Damon being the older of the two. The friends grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Damon once recalled the moment he knew Affleck was going to be a longtime friend. “Little five-foot-two Ben Affleck tackled this dude off of me, like out of nowhere,” Damon said of once getting into a fight and Affleck coming to his defense.

Robin, the Boy Wonder was first introduced in the pages of Batman comic books in 1940, having been created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. The character's domino mask and green-forward costume, as well as his name, were inspired by Robin Hood. In the myth of the comics, the young Dick Grayson was a mere eight years old and worked as a traveling circus performer with his family, aka The Flying Graysons. Dick's parents were murdered by a wicked gangster who had been extorting the circus owners. Orphaned, Dick was taken in by Bruce Wayne and trained in the art of crime-fighting.
As is the natural progression for a comic book character, Robin underwent multiple transformations and iterations over the decades. When Dick Grayson aged out of the role of Boy Wonder (he eventually became a superhero of his own named Nightwing), other younger people, usually teenagers, took on the mantle of Batman's brightly colored sidekick.

There aren’t many actors out there who get the chance to build career as varied and eclectic as Brendan Fraser. After some small roles in a handful of TV movies, Fraser had a phenomenal year in 1992. The two movies from that year saw that him skyrocket to new-found fame were Encino Man, and School Ties. While Encino Man showcased his faculty to lead a comedy picture, School Ties demonstrated Fraser’s dynamic range in a much more dramatic affair. Fraser soon amassed widespread attention when he forefronted The Mummy in 1999. The film spawned two sequels and crowned him a...

Brendan Fraser's richly deserved comeback crested last March when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." It was the end of a long, hard road that began in the 2000s with a messy divorce, an alleged sexual assault at the groping hands of the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and a deep depression caused by the death of his mother. Fraser had gone from being one of the most exciting talents of his generation to a C-level movie star.
That generation included Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, all three of whom co-starred with Fraser in the 1992 antisemitism drama "School Ties." They were all often in competition for the same roles, but they eventually made their own way in the industry. Fraser's square-jawed good looks and comedic gifts landed him leading roles in "The Mummy" and "George of the Jungle,...

“Air” has been embraced by critics and audiences, Amazon was more than happy to note in its press release about the Prime Video debut, with Affleck’s feature generating a 92 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, a 98 percent audience score, and an A-grade from CinemaScore. Here’s some boilerplate language about the project:

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have shared the screen and bank accounts, but one thing they didn’t agree on was Damon’s lifestyle when they were roommates.

Before his career and personal life were thrown off course, Brendan Fraser was a promising leading man throughout the 1990s. Now, Fraser is back where he should’ve been all along, sharing the screen and the spotlight with other big-name actors. His small role in the cult classic Now and Then isn’t his most memorable performance, but Fraser’s presence in the movie is noteworthy because of who he replaced for the character. Leonardo DiCaprio was set to be in Now and Then before dropping out. Nearly three decades later and after wildly different trajectories, Fraser and DiCaprio will share screen time in one of 2023’s most highly anticipated films.

1992's "School Ties" didn't do very well at the box office, but it managed to launch the careers of a whole bunch of major Hollywood stars, including Brendan Fraser, Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Anthony Rapp, and more. I'll never forget watching TV after school one day in the late afternoon and catching "School Ties" on cable, shocked that I had never heard of this movie before. Not only is it a heartbreaking and potent film about anti-Semitism that's unfortunately still all-too-relevant, but it's also a who's-who of then-unknowns who went on to become major players.

Jennifer Lopez is obsessed with “Yellowstone”, just like a lot of other people.
Lopez’s husband Ben Affleck appeared on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” alongside his longtime friend and “Air” co-star Matt Damon, when he discussed Lopez’s love for the hit show.
“I’m kind of disturbed that my wife really likes ‘Yellowstone’,” Affleck joked, adding the singer was “really drawn to the romance between Cole Hauser and the woman who plays his wife.”
Hauser — who plays Rip Wheeler — appeared in 1992 flick “School Ties” with Affleck and Damon, as well as starring in the Oscar-winning 1997 film “Good Will Hunting” with them.
Affleck and Hauser also starred in 1993’s “Dazed and Confused” together.

Brendan Fraser is finally an Oscar winning actor, deservedly so for his performance in The Whale. The outpouring of love and recognition for Fraser in the last year has been heartwarming because he’s always been great, since his powerhouse debuts in 1992’s Encino Man and School Ties. His specialty, it would turn out, would be in acting opposite CGI visual effects.

From the late ‘90s to early ‘00s, Fraser appeared in several movies with co-stars who would be added in later with computers. It was already becoming a common practice after Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park, and hasn’t stopped with the Marvel movies. Nobody ever did it better than Fraser though, and these three roles are the proof.

Brendan Fraser is the man of the moment.
At the Oscars ceremony on Sunday night (12 March), the actor, 54, completed his career comeback with a Best Actor win for his role as a man with life-threatening obesity in Darren Aronofsky’s divisive drama The Whale.
Fraser’s portrayal had previously earned him standing ovations at film festivals in Venice and Toronto, and saw him receive the best reviews of his career. Read The Independent’s take here.
His recent success comes after some years out of the spotlight. Fraser first broke out in the early 1990s with the comedy Encino Man and the drama School Ties, before going on to become a household name for George of the Jungle and The Mummy trilogy.
He also did dramatic turns in Gods and Monsters, The Quiet American and 2006 Best Picture winner Crash.

Brendan Fraser has won the best-actor Oscar for “The Whale,” a transformative role in which he revived a career that was once so bright.
“I started in this business 30 years ago and things didn’t come easily to me,” said Fraser, breathing heavily. “I just want to say thank you for this acknowledgement.”

It’s great to see the Brenaissance happen. Oscar nominee Brendan Fraser has been a joy to watch in movies since 1992’s Encino Man. Although the Oscars tend to overlook comedy, Fraser has done strong dramatic work long before The Whale. However, it’s great to see his performance in The Whale recognized.

The Whale is a movie directed by Darren Aronofsky starring Brendan Fraser whom we guess will win the Oscar… and an excellent Sadie Sink,
This movie is based on a play by Samuel D. Hunter.
As it can be with you, we didn´t feel like watching it at all and it surprised us in many ways.
It is as expected: extremely melodramatic and yes, it is about a man with hyper obesity.
Storyline
A university professor who can barely get out of his chair. He teaches online and his obesity points to the evident: if he does not do something about it, he will die within a few days.
Movie Review The Whale
Extremely melodramatic, this movie is not a feel good movie nor a happy outing to the movies film. From the very first frame, Brendan Fraser takes a gamble in interpretation and he will be remembered for...

I don’t know about you, but I spent my Valentine’s Day evening onstage at the Arlington Theatre for the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s American Riviera Award tribute to Brendan Fraser. I have to say it was definitely a love affair between the sold-out audience in that huge venue and the Oscar-, SAG- and BAFTA-nominated and Critics Choice Award-winning star of The Whale.

Sbiff produces these elaborate two-hour tributes to various Oscar nominees each year, and this year’s crop has included Cate Blanchett, Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Colin Farrell & Brendan Gleeson together. I have been doing these for the past two decades and this one was so much fun to do, and you couldn’t find a more deserving or genuinely nice recipient.

“It’s a film that always had the intention to change hearts and minds,” Brendan Fraser said of The Whale, for which he is nominated for the best actor Oscar, ahead of receiving the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s American Riviera Award on Tuesday night.
The popular star, who was greeted with huge applause by the Santa Barbarians who packed the historic Arlington Theater, discussed his life and career with Deadline‘s Pete Hammond, who described the actor’s recent resurgence, after several years out of the spotlight that he had occupied since the early 1990s, as “the Brenaissance.”
Coming from an “itinerate family” that spent considerable time in Europe, Fraser said that seeing plays in London as a kid hooked him on the idea of becoming an actor. He studied at a conservatory in Seattle before heading to L.A. in 1991, where he was asked by Sherry Lansing...

1992 was a breakout year for Brendan Fraser, who demonstrated his impressive range with star turns in the cult comedy hit "Encino Man" and the hard-hitting drama "School Ties." Fraser continued that trend of displaying serious dramatic abilities alongside his talent for playing what he once told GQ are "naif characters" and "fish out of water" types in '90s comedies like "George of the Jungle" and "Blast From the Past." Then there was the unfortunate "Dudley Do-Right" which signaled the end of that particular golden age.
With his resurgence in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," Fraser has reminded us all of his impressive dramatic talents. But for many, it was those outsider characters, stumbling wide-eyed through worlds they didn't fully understand, that defined the actor's appeal. And while "George Of The Jungle" was perhaps the biggest hit within that particular Fraser subgenre, affectionately termed his "himbo" movies, it all started with "Encino Man.

When the creative team behind "School Ties" -- which included "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf and director Robert Mandel -- were putting together the cast for their high school drama about a Jewish football player facing antisemitism at an elite prep school, they were tasked with finding fresh young faces who they hoped would be able to carry the movie despite not yet having any star power. It had worked before, after all, perhaps most famously in "The Outsiders." And much like Francis Ford Coppola struck gold with a cast that included Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, and Rob Lowe, Mandel and Wolf hit the jackpot and found bonafide big screen stars in Brendan Fraser, Chris O'Donnell, Ben Affleck, and, of course, Matt Damon.

Dick Wolf is easily one of modern television's most prolific producers, if not the most prolific. His impact on network television can't be understated thanks to his work on the "Law & Order" franchise and "Miami Vice." What many may forget is that he's also had his hand in the film industry, writing the scripts for films such as "Masquerade" and "No Man's Land."
However, if there is one film of his that is worth talking about today, it's "School Ties." Starring a who's who of future acting stars, it centers around the conflicts surrounding a Jewish teenager in 1959 that starts attending a fancy prep school seemingly consisting of Anglo-Saxon bullies. David (Brendan Fraser) is, for a time, caught between two worlds — one where he needs to hide his Jewish faith and heritage, and another where he doesn't. Unfortunately, those worlds end up colliding in ways he could have never anticipated.

Welcome to the Brenaissance -- or Brendanaissance, whatever you want to call it!
Brendan Fraser is enjoying a long-overdue comeback thanks to his gut-wrenching performance in The Whale.
Though he's most famous for goofy roles and being beautiful in 1990s rom-coms, Fraser has an exceptional range that often gets overlooked, particularly as he has matured and taken on a wider variety of roles in diverse projects.
Fraser has starred alongside some cinematic heavy hitters and taken all sorts of risks -- indie films, big-budget studio flicks, and television -- he's done it all.
Here are some examples of his best work, including some of his biggest hits and some underrated gems.
The Mummy (1999)
Fraser channels Errol Flynn and Indiana Jones as Rick O'Connell in The Mummy, his most commercially successful and enduring hit.

With the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards upon us, comeback kid Brendan Fraser is poised to win an Oscar for his heartbreaking, gut-wrenching performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" (read /Film's spot on review of the film here). If Fraser, famous for his swashbuckling days as Rick O'Connell in "The Mummy" franchise and off-the-wall comedies like "Airheads," wasn't ever considered a serious dramatic actor, he is now. Appearing as a guest on the "Saturday Night Live" deep dive podcast "Fly on the Wall" hosted by Dana Carvey and David Spade, Fraser opened up about his early days in the business when he was determined to be taken seriously as a performer.
Having just enjoyed some notoriety for his breakout role in "School Ties" (a film about a football star forced to confront anti-Semitism at a 1950s prep school), Fraser was trying to decide if playing a blockhead caveman...

Brendan Fraser could not contain his emotions after winning Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards for his performance in “The Whale.” The 54-year-old actor, more than three decades after his movie breakthrough in “School Ties” and “Encino Man,” scored his first major victory of this awards season for his powerful role as an obese Idaho teacher.
“If you, like a guy like Charlie, who I played in this movie, in any way struggle with obesity,” he said, weeping, “or you just feel like you’re in a dark sea, I want you to know that if you, too, can have the strength to just get to your feet and go to the light, good things will happen.”
Great comeback stories were in the air on Sunday night. In fact, Fraser hugged supporting actor winner Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”) on his way to the stage. Some...

The Whale has finally hit screens across the country, and audiences are experiencing the much-talked-about performance from Brendan Fraser. While this is not the first big comeback story in the movie game, fans are celebrating the relighting of the spotlight on Fraser, whose personal troubles prevented him from taking leading roles for a number of years. Lad Bible reports on Fraser’s whimsical attitude toward the response to his resurgence.
Even before The Whale‘s official release, Fraser’s career had already restarted at great speed as he was cast in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming anticipated movie, Killers of the Flower Moon. The School Ties actor finds himself at a first in his career, being both famous and unsalaried. When asked about a possible return to The Mummy franchise, Fraser responds, “Gosh, I don’t know any juicy details about it, but it’s kinda been an open-ended question for some time now.

HBO Max may (hopefully) be done randomly pulling original series from the service, but there are still a number of TV shows and films due to leave HBO Max in January as part of the regularly scheduled shuffling.
Multiple seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” will leave HBO Max on Jan. 3, so get those final binge-watches in Asap. And the beloved WB series “Everwood” is due to depart on Jan. 21 if you feel like seeing what young Chris Pratt was up to in the early 2000s.
In terms of movies leaving HBO Max, there are quite a lot. “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” turns into a ghost on Jan. 20, while Jon M. Chu’s delightful musical “In the Heights” leaves on Jan. 27.
Noteworthy films leaving HBO Max on Jan. 31 include the first three “John Wick” movies, the first three “Jurassic Park” films, the first two installments in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise,...

Brendan Fraser is experiencing something of a career renaissance, and really, we couldn't be happier. While he's getting critical acclaim -- and a probable Oscar nomination -- for "The Whale," he has put in outstanding work throughout his career. Yes, we're even including "Encino Man," in which he performed some genuinely terrific physical comedy. But while he's arguably best known for goofy comedies and action adventures like "The Mummy," Fraser is also no stranger to dramatic roles, such as his breakthrough role in "School Ties."
The film is a strong coming-of-age story dealing with issues of antisemitism in the 1950s, and features a largely satisfying ending that sees Fraser's character, David Greene, come out on top after being wrongly accused of cheating and threatened with expulsion from his prestigious boarding school.

Brendan Fraser is a beloved actor who seemed to be missing for a while. As can easily be found online, he wasn’t missing, he was simply working less and doing a lot of television while seemingly being blacklisted as an A-list actor. With love from his fanbase, a few daring filmmakers, and a lot of talent from Mr. Fraser, he seems to be fully back and we love it! With The Whale due in theaters this Friday, we decided to put together this list of our 5 favorite Brendan Fraser movies!
Encino Man (1992)
For most people back in the 1990s, this was their introduction to Brendan Fraser, as a seemingly not that bright cavemen woken by an earthquake in modern-day Encino. The film is pure 90s cheese with the humor of the period in full display and with Fraser giving a performance that really works and makes the film something...

Sadie Sink admits she didn’t know much about Brendan Fraser until she was cast as his estranged daughter in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale.”
“To be honest, I hadn’t seen any of his films. I didn’t grow up with his films,” the 20-year-old actor told me at the New York City premiere of “The Whale” Tuesday night at Alice Tully Hall. “Of course, now I’ve seen all of them.”
Sink’s favorite? “I love ‘School Ties,” the “Stranger Things” star said. Fraser starred in the 1992 drama as a Jewish high schooler attending an exclusive prep school on a football scholarship. He decides to hide being Jewish when he realizes many of his classmates — including those played by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon — are antisemitic.
“I think Brendan is brilliant in it,” Sink said.

The world may seem like it's gone to hell in a handbasket these days, but one thing that's recently united society is the triumphant career revival of beloved actor Brendan Fraser, whose comeback is affectionately being hailed as "the Brenaissance."
Through the '90s and early aughts, Fraser blessed movie audiences worldwide with his magnetic onscreen presence, bringing his signature earnestness to a plethora of roles both comedic and dramatic, and cementing himself as a bonafide movie star who earned lots of money for the studios. However, after a series of unfortunate events, Fraser sadly dropped off Hollywood's A-list, and his career went painfully quiet. Thankfully, he's now back in full movie-star swing with his forthcoming critically-acclaimed turn in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." Fraser also recently appeared in Steven Soderbergh's "No Sudden Move" and can be seen next year in Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

It’s been great to see Brendan Fraser return to our screens, and one of the actor’s upcoming projects finds him starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. While the pair haven’t actually worked together before, their reunion on set was a special one for Fraser.

While speaking with GQ, Brendan Fraser spoke of reuniting with Leonardo DiCaprio on Killers of the Flower Moon decades after their first brief encounter. Fraser had seen a screening of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape on the Paramount lot and wanted DiCaprio to know how great he was in the movie.

With Brendan Fraser amid one of the best comebacks in recent history, thanks to The Whale, now is an excellent time to look back at some of his earlier, more underrated work. School Ties definitely qualifies. The story of a Jewish athlete facing anti-semitism at an exclusive prep school, the movie boasts an outstanding cast of Hollywood heavyweights, all of whom were not yet famous. Brendan Fraser, Cole Hauser, Chris O’Donnell and Matt Damon, as Fraser’s hateful antagonist, were all relatively new to the business. However, for Fraser, School Ties was actually his first feature, even though the quickly-shot the 1992 comedy Encino Man beat it to theaters. That film was a surprise smash, so by the time School Ties came out, Fraser was already a rising heartthrob.
While the movie was unfairly overlooked by many, it holds up well thirty years later. Fraser was fully formed as an actor,...

Brendan Fraser fought armies of the undead in “The Mummy.” He swung from vines in “George of the Jungle.” He traveled around the world with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in “Looney Toons: Back in Action.” He made a pact with Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil in “Bedazzled.” He partied with Pauly Shore as a reanimated Neanderthal in “Encino Man.” He even took a shower with Matt Damon in “School Ties.” And while those movies brought him fame, fortune and respect in Hollywood, rocketing Fraser to the top of the A-list in the 1990s and early aughts, they didn’t usually scream “Oscar-worthy.” He was always invited to the party, of course, but as a presenter, not a nominee.
“I give really good podium,” Fraser says. “I’m great at handing out awards. It’s easy. The pressure is off. You’re up on the stage, staring out at all...
