All hail the now-defunct Dallas institute of weird and wooly media, Forbidden Books and Video. It was in a scuzzy neighborhood down by the fair grounds, which was perfect for a place where bored high school kids could rent Romper Stomper, Nekromantik, El Topo, or similarly mind-warping movies. Straight out of Australia comes a white-hot blast in the face called The Horseman, a film that's really tough to "love," but very easy to admire. Cast from the same acidic mold as brazen Aussie indies like Romper Stomper and Chopper, this is a take-no-prisoners genre flick that I choose to describe as an "emotional thriller," and it's one of the most intense, powerful, and aggressively compelling films I've seen in quite some time. (And fair warning to fathers of daughters: This film will kick Your ass, specifically. Be forewarned).
Anchored by a stunning lead performance by Peter Marshall, The Horseman is about a man who just found out that his runaway teenage daughter has died from an overdose.

[Word is in that theater chain Greater Union have reversed their decision to pull The Combination from screens and will resume screenings on Wednesday.]
Could current Australian gang film The Combination be the next Romper Stomper? That’s the early buzz but it’s just gotten a lot harder for Australian audiences to judge for themselves thanks to theater chain Greater Union yanking the film from its screens after it triggered outbreaks of violence at screenings.
Using a series of actual race-riots that rocked Australia four years ago as its starting point, The Combination is the story of poor young immigrant gangs - particularly those of Lebanese descent - and their clashes with Australia’s white suburban population. How true to life is this film? Not only does it incorporate a good amount of actual news footage but it turns out that one of its lead actors - Ali Haider - has been held in custody on assault charges since November. As for the writer / director, himself of Lebanese descent, he says he based
