In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.
Joy Ride - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 10/2001
Joy Ride passes one of the tests of a good thriller, which is that when the characters approach a closed room or mysterious package or, in this case, a car trunk within which a surprise is waiting, it's not easy to predict what the surprise will be. In this case, college student Lewis (Paul Walker), his ne'er-do-well brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) and Venna (Leelee Sobieski), a girl Lewis is sweet on, have been directed by a psychopath who's been stalking them to pull over and open the trunk of their car. What's inside won't be revealed here, but it's a nice twist that's both logical and provides a quiet little chill.

When a TV series whose broadcast run got nipped in the bud re-emerges on DVD in its entirety, the hope is always that it will allow for the discovery of buried treasures. This is particularly so in the case of Fear Itself, since each of its 13 episodes was helmed by a different director, and only eight got aired before NBC quietly dropped it from the schedule in summer 2008.
Lionsgate’s new four-disc set, however, reveals that Fear Itself’s best stuff actually did make it to the tube the first time around, most notably the contributions by genre faves Stuart Gordon and Larry Fessenden. You can check out our previous reviews of the original eight via these links:

Between its September 15th DVD release date and FEARnet running the unaired episodes, there are plenty of ways to dig on what you didn't see while "Fear Itself" was on TV. For those of you without cable who are curious for a taste, we've got an exclusive clip and stills for you from an episode called "Chance".
"Chance" is directed by John Dahl (You Kill Me, The Last Seduction) and written by Lem Dobbs (The Score) and Rick Dahl (Red Rock West). In the vein of such classic doppelganger stories as Jekyll & Hyde and Poe's William Wilson, the episode explores a dreadful, classic battle that ensues when a man, played by Ethan Embry (Brotherhood, Sweet Home Alabama), is confronted by his evil self. Also starring are Christine Chatelain (“Smallville”) and Vondie Curtis-Hall (“ER,” Soul Food). Premieres on FEARnet: 9/6 -- Ends 9/16

"Fear Itself" should be pretty fresh in your minds considering it's hitting DVD soon with some very bitchin' artwork. The short-lived show was like the unofficial third season of "Masters of Horror". For various reasons it was pulled before it could run its final five episodes. FEARnet is out to fix all that.
Starting on September 2nd the final five will begin being aired. Below you'll find a synopsis of each episode and when you can tune in to see them.

Fear Itself, the unofficial 3rd season of Masters Of Horror is finally coming to DVD on September 15th courtesy of Lionsgate. And with the boxed sets release, we'll finally get to see 5 episodes that were never aired during the show's initial run on NBC. Well, we just got the exclusive word that you'll get a chance to see those 5 episodes even earlier now.

Just in time for its bow at Cannes film market, Mischief Maker Studios and Ronalds Brothers Productions proudly unveil The Graves movie poster, painted by acclaimed illustrator Arthur Suydam.
“Arthur is in a league unto himself,” says The Graves writer/director Brian Pulido. “He is a master draftsman who first came onto the comics scene in the 1970’s. His work on Cholly and Flytrap blew my mind, and his contributions to Tarzan, Conan, Death Dealer, and of course his infamous Marvel Zombie covers solidified his place as one of the top illustrators on the planet. Unity, Arizona is one of the toughest places to live in the world. The Stockton family formed the Church of Devout Ascension under severe drought and hardship in the late 1800’s, and it continues to this day, rejuvenated by the prosperity caused by the “Miracle at Skull City”. But not everyone in the flock is willing to make the sacrifices Reverend Stockton demands. That’s where Deacon Luke comes in: Comply and all is well. Resist and die a horrible death.

The fourth teaser poster for Brian Pulido's The Graves emerged today, this time showcasing a character with a penchant for some monstrous demonstrations.
If ya head on up to Skull City Mine, be sure to visit the blacksmith, Jonah Lee Atwood. He gives a demonstration every hour on the hour. Then again, Jonah is a murderer, responsible for hundreds of deaths.
Shane Stevens delivers a nuanced performance as an unyielding killer who fulfills a solemn obligation, even while he hates himself for doing it. What would possess a man to do the unthinkable?

As of this writing, I have just completed a lengthy and fascinating interview with an actor who I have been both drawn to and repelled by for over 20 years, a unique one of a kind cinematic presence who has fascinated and frustrated me, hypnotized me and infuriated me. But no matter what his effect, Nicolas Cage has always been a presence in my life and is someone who I have defended vehemently, sometimes against my better judgment, but has nonetheless given me a series of films that are virtually part of my DNA. Stuff like the razor sharp and unhinged satire Vampire’S Kiss; the beautiful and berserk Lynch masterpiece Wild At Heart; the neo-noir of Red Rock West, the list goes on. Hell, I even loved Ghost Rider…
