Avik, a young Innuit Eskimo, is stolen from his people by a mapper before World War II, and flown south to Canada, where he is treated for tiberculosis. It is there that he meets Albertine, a half-caste Indian, and the two will share a bond that holds strong over racial barriers, time and war. Sweeping, romantic experience gets a little self-important at times, but the story is well-told and even enjoyable at times. Casting issues aside, the film is director Ward's finest achievement, and deserves the international recognition it received upon release. Lee is good in the lead role in a story that combines the racist attitudes of another time with old-fashioned romance.
