The Last Airbender
Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series

Orphan (DVD Review)

Orphan would seem like another entry into horror’s ‘scary kid’ sub-genre but in reality it draws upon another tried and true plotline, that of the psychotic stranger entering the lives of normal people. We saw the psychotic neighbor in Pacific Heights; the psychotic nanny in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle; the psychotic new dad in The Stepfather; and countless others. For whatever reason, this is a formula that generally tends to produce a decent film. Perhaps it’s the turn from normalcy into deranged killer that fascinates us so much.
John (Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate (Vera Farmiga) (and boy, were those names an accident or a shot at the annoying reality TV stars) have just lost what would have been their third child due to a miscarriage. Distraught Kate is a recovering alcoholic and it seems that her emotional stability can be gained when they decide to adopt a child.

Walking into the Prairie Production Centre, the cavernous Winnipeg studio in which Darren Lynn Bousman’s Mother’S Day is being shot, is like walking into a Home Show exhibit gone terribly, terribly wrong. Tasteful upscale house interiors, courtesy of Saw V/VI production designer Anthony Ianni, initially suggest model McMansions erected for moneyed buyers, but closer inspection reveals it must surely be the maid’s day off. Blood is smeared across windows, splattered on doors, pooled in seat cushions and artfully dribbled and drabbled over the pool table, the fully stocked bar and the framed Village People album covers hanging on the wall.
Mother’S Day is, in name at least, a remake of the 1980 shocker directed by Charles Kaufman (brother of Troma-meister Lloyd), which at first glance seemed like just another entry in the stalk-‘n-slash/holiday sweepstakes. In fact, it was more of a low-budget cross between

The Family That Slays Together: Ten Domestic Slashers

If you feel like you've seen this week's new slasher flick "The Stepfather" before, you probably have, even if you're not a fan of the 1987 original starring "Lost"'s Terry O'Quinn. That's because the family-bands-together-to-fend-off-the-one-member-who-turns-on-the-rest trope is at the heart of dozens of horror movies.
Need proof? Here's a list of ten different types of immediate and extended family members and a notable cinematic example of each going medieval on their loved ones.
Killer Mom
I'd wager that everybody has said "My parents are crazy!" at least once in their lives. But the filicidal mother in 2008's "Baby Blues" is so far gone into Crazytown that she'll make you want to call your own mom to apologize for ever implying she was nuts. Colleen Porch plays the killer in question, an exhausted mother of four with a truck-driving husband, who snaps one day and begins picking off her own children slasher movie-style; at one point,

I’m still not convinced of Ashlee Simpson-Wentz’s “acting” skills, but she does a mean Tawny Kitaen impersonation! In tonight's episode "Shoreline" she definitely won the competition for "best redhead to writhe against a fancy sportscar" since Whitesnake’s 1987 video for "Here I Go Again."
And come to think of it, Violet's skintight minidress and black booties did have a little ‘80s flair. But I’m jumping ahead of myself….let’s get back to why Violet was writhing (and with whom). It seems she was “watering Auggie’s herb garden” while he was away on a surfing trip,

Darren Lynn Bousman's 'Mother's Day' is extremely news heavy at the moment, and yet another new cast announcement has been made. This time it's the mother! And it's going to be played by none other than Rebecca DeMornay! The 50-year old actress (Yes! 50!!!), who'll be rembered by most for her role as that whacky nanny in 'The Hand That Rocks the Cradle', will be joining the current cast of Jaime King, Briana Evigan, Shawn Ashmore,

After a long search, director Darren Bousman has announced who will be playing the evil matriarch in Mother's Day and it's an actress who's no stranger to crazy women. Rebecca De Mornay, who creeped every the eff out in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, has signed on to play Mother, a woman who will "go to any length to protect her children." Though the original was a B-movie horror flick along the lines of The Last House On The Left, Bousman's remake is expected to skew a little

She's still best known as a psycho in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Rebecca De Mornay is playing another monster for Mother's Day.
Darren Lyn Bousman is spearheading the remake of the 1980s horror pic (below), which finds a sadistic mother and her brood of villains returning to their former family home to terrorise the new inhabitants.
So it looks like she'll be doing what she does best - intimidating people. De Mornay joins a cast that already includes Alexa Vega, Jaime King, Shawn Ashmore and Deborah Ann Woll.
With a script...

Most people recognize Rebecca De Mornay from her turn as the psychotic, homicidal nanny in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (though I personally hold her more dearly as the closest Disney ever dared get to sexy as Lady DeWinter in The Three Musketeers). Apparently ready to take the next step in exploring the mind of the maternally malignant, she's moving up from mommy killer to mommy who kills.
Three time Saw director Darren Bousman and first time screenplay writer Scott Kilam have teamed up to remake Charles Kaufman's (not to be confused with Charlie Kaufman) 1980 horror flick Mother's Day, the story of a woman who elicits the love of her two sons by seeing which of them can most creatively rape and kill women. With a plot like that it.s hard to imagine why it hasn.t already been remade before.

It’s hard to believe, but Rebecca De Mornay (of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” and “Risky Business” fame) is now playing mothers in movies. Okay, so this mother in the remake of “Mother’s Day” happens to be atypical — she’s a psycho who has raised two equally psychotic boys who will do anything to please her, even terrify and torture hapless young lady campers.
That was the premise of the Troma original, anyway. The remake, from “Saw” director Darren Lynn Bousman will take the setting out of the woods and back into the homestead, where the psycho boys and their psycho mother (De Mornay) return to their old home to torture the new occupants and their guests.
Jaime King will play the female lead, the lady of the house. Also in the cast are Shawn Ashmore, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Matt O’Leary and Deborah Ann Woll.

-- Rebecca De Mornay, who I'll always identify with the delightfully cheesy "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle," gets to roll out her sadistic mommy act again when she stars in the upcoming remake of the 1980 horror flick "Mother's Day." Latter-day "Saw" director Darren Lynn Bousman is directing, so expect plenty of greasy, grimy gore to keep you up at night when De Mornay and her band of twisted sociopaths terrorize a family living in their old home. (Variety)
-- Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in the revenge flick "Driving Angry," which will be a 3-D release. Cage will play a man who sets out on a quest for bloody murder after his daughter is killed and her child is kidnapped. Patrick Lussier will direct a script that he co-wrote with Todd Farmer. Lussier previously directed "My Bloody Valentine 3D," so he's got plenty of experience in looking

Peter Sarsgaard: Witnessing the Orphan

As the genres of 'Killer kid' movies and 'family in jeopardy' flicks always revolve around a troubled mother overcoming her personal demons to save her family from the invader trying to tear it apart, the fathers are usually clueless victims. They don't notice that their family is under attack and poo-poo their wives' suspicions as paranoia... Until they are targeted in the climax. As the architect father in Orphan, John Coleman (Peter Sarsgaard) is no exception.
To actor Peter Sarsgaard's credit, despite playing a Dad more oblivious than the fathers in Poison Ivy, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle and The Ties That Bind combined, he manages to make him sympathetic all the same. "He shows his intelligence offscreen," the actor jokes. "His intelligence is in his work! It's almost like the most commonplace thing in the world to the man is that around his house, he wants everything to stay at this decibel.
