Jill is a producer of morning talk show "Wake Up New York" and is dreading a visit from her widowed mother Edie. Edie while sitting thru the taping of the show ends up interrupting the guest (who's a fashion designer showing off his new line) Edie ends up venting her opinion on the new designs (way too glam for what's supposed to be everyday wear) and somehow ends up impressing the network execs enough that they offer her a job on the show as an on camera personality. Jill is at first appalled by this, but when she ends up realizing how unhappy her mother is at home by herself without much to do in her daily life, she comes around to the idea.

Edie causes a problem for Jill when she vents her opinion on the air about some of the network's "Sweeps Months" Programming including things like Movie of the Week "Kill Me In My Underwear" and "Naked Came the Lifeguard" (or as Edie says "These are things your bowling ball could watch...I for one have had it and so has my bowling ball.") This of course causes some grief for Jill when the big network execs come to her office to request that Edie promote some of their programming on air as a make good which of course Edie can't do. This touches on a question tho--Can Jill reign in Edie's worse impulses as a producer? (and can she call out her mother after a lifetime of not being able to?) The two women go back and fourth on who really calls the shots--and eventually an agreement is drawn up and agreed upon.
