Waterworld Blu-ray Review

15 November 2009 9:14 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Hollywood has figured something out, which is that even if you spend a shit-ton of money on a film, that in and of itself can attract an audience. It’s hard to look at the relative success of Waterworld at the box office as anything more than rubbernecking on the freeway, and it was worthwhile for many who had grown tired of Kevin Costner. My review of Waterworld after the jump.

Though somewhat stiff at times, Costner was the leading man of the late 80’s, even more so than Tom Cruise, with his sexual charisma and aw-shucks charm. No Way Out, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams said “hey world, check me out.” Then came Dances with Wolves, which won him a couple of Oscars, defeating the (now seen as obviously superior) Goodfellas. Some resentment sets in with success and the oddball A Perfect World, and the terrible »

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" nabs two new leading ladies

3 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Talk about your shift change. Law & Order: Criminal Intent is getting an overhaul and then some as its adds bisexual actress Saffron Burrows and Oscar-nominated actress Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio to its upcoming ninth season.

The new cast members come in the wake of the departure of four series regulars: original stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe along with Eric Bogosian and Julianne Nicholson. Jeff Goldblum will be the only remaining principal cast member.

Nicholson’s Det. Megan Wheeler is being replaced by Burrows, who will be Goldblum’s new partner. Mastrantonio, meanwhile, will become the first female captain for the Major Case Squad, taking over for Bogosian.

Mastrantonio had a recurring role on Without a Trace, but this will be her first regular TV gig. I’m glad to see she is back; I had a little thing for her back in her Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves days. »

New Set Photos from Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood Movie Starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, and Mark Strong

27 October 2009 11:09 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

More Set Photos from Ridley Scott’s still untitled Robin Hood flick (although it looks like it will probably just be called “Robin Hood”) have surfaced online and as you can see from these images it still looks like a “Robin Hood” movie.  In a recent interview on Australian television, Crowe said that the 1991 Kevin Costner film, “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” was “like watching an extended Jon Bon Jovi video clip.”  I find that statement funny because I look at the costumes and locations for this movie and I feel like I’ve saw this upcoming Ridley Scott version back in 1991 when it was called “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”.  Hit the jump to see the set photos and why I think Scott’s “Robin Hood” won’t work.

Scott’s film will supposedly be a “realistic” take on the Robin Hood myth and that makes me even more uninterested in the movie. »

What are Your Guilty Pleasure Movies, but Don't Like to Admit It?

14 October 2009 12:38 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I thought the response to my "Do You Ever Lie about the Movies You've Seen? " post was excellent, and on top of everything so many of you said, several new questions came as a result. One of them, offered by 'Steve Mott', asks the question in the headline: Do you have guilty pleasures you don't like to admit to?

Steve lists his guilty pleasure as 10 Things I Hate About You, a film I personally love and was just discussing recently with a friend when the topic of "Where the hell did Julia Stiles go?" came up. To that effect I also love Save the Last Dance and to answer the Stiles question before someone gets smart in the comments, yes, she has the Bourne films and wrote and directed a film starring Zooey Deschanel and has also been doing plenty of work on stage. Moving along...

New Universal Films to Watch Out For: Robin Hood, MacGruber

13 October 2009 6:46 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Universal Studios has posted synopses of some of their major 2010 films, and two are piquing our interest here at Screen Rant.

The first is “Untitled Robin Hood Adventure,” directed by Ridley Scott of Blade Runner, Alien, Black Hawk Down, and I could keep going, fame. Russell Crowe steps into the tights (well, more like armor this time around looking at the Crowe’s Robin Hood costume) of the mythic English folk hero who enacted his own economic stimulus package for the peasants of Nottingham village.

This story has come to the big screen countless times, twice in one year even, with 1991 seeing Patrick Bergin in Robin Hood matching barbs with Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Some would say neither film, which played up the bandit’s romantic soul and added period realism, hit the bull’s-eye, and still consider Errol Flynn’s swashbuckling The Adventures of Robin Hood the gold standard. »

The Top 10 Most Influential Scores of the Past Decade: #5

4 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | SCOREcastOnline.com | See recent SCOREcastOnline.com news »

#5 - The Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy

(Klaus Badelt/Hans Zimmer)

Blaring brass, sawing strings, playful woodwinds, bombastic percussion, ghostly choirs... It's the latest release from EastWest! Uh... or a cue from the Jerry Bruckheimer/Disney franchise The Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Okay, look. We know this one is going to start a flame war... but before you comment on why this score is the end to all that's right and holy in our industry, just remember... You Voted For These!

The Pirates Of The Caribbean started out being something that Hans Zimmer never thought would amount to much (Tpotc: The Curse of the Black Pearl; 2003), and ended up being probably one of the definitive works of his career (Tpotc: At World's End; 2007). Originally handed off to protege Klaus Badelt to handle (with Zimmer "producing" as an overseer... Lead balloon, much?), Tpotc might be solely responsible for the deluge of »

Bad Accents In Film

22 September 2009 10:42 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

How many times have you sat down to watch a film and no matter how hard you try you can’t ignore that actor who ruins everything by putting on an atrocious accent.

Let’s take a look at some notorious crimes in the history of movie accents:

Nicolas Cage As Captain Antonio Corelli

In Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (2001)

Nicolas Cage puts on a comical Italian accent and ruins any romantic feelings the film was trying for. He seems to have taken lessons from Mario and Luigi in to how to deliver the most stereotypical Italian voice ever. To be fair the film was boring anyway so credit to him for at least making it funnier in places.

Heather Graham As Mary Kelly

In From Hell (2001)

Apart from the fact that she looks to clean and well groomed to be an east end prostitute in Victorian London, Heather Graham delivers »

Sean Connery Tops Poll for Worst Film Accent

31 August 2009 4:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

In a poll by Empire magazine, fans voted Sean Connery for having the worst film accent of all time. "Whether he's a Russian sub captain (The Hunt For Red October) or even an English king (First Knight, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), always that baritone Highland burr remains," said the magazine. Coming in second is Dick Van Dyke for his awful Cockney as the chimney sweep in Disney's 1964 "Mary Poppins," starring opposite the properly-accented Julie Andrews. Actors who did not make the list were Tom Cruise for "Far and Away" and Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Blood Diamond." Top 10 list: 1. Sean Connery (Hunt for Red October) 2. Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins) 3. Brad Pitt (Seven Years in Tibet) 4. Charlton Heston (Touch of Evil) 5. Heather Graham (From Hell) 6. Keanu Reeves (Bram Stoker's Dracula) 7. New Robin Hood movie to be set in futuristic London

10 August 2009 6:59 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The 25th Robin Hood Festival in Nottingham has just come to a close after a week of celebrations in Sherwood Forest, proving the enduring power of the legendary outlaw.

And the hero will definitely live on, with the latest project taking him into a setting that is more Robin in da hood, or maybe even Robin hoodie.

While Robin may have fired his final arrow in the BBC TV series, we have an upcoming historical movie from Universal with Ridley Scott directing and Russell Crowe wielding the bow and arrow - and now a futuristic makeover from Warner Bros and the producers of The Dark Knight and 300.

Danish commercials director and photojournalist Nicolai Fuglsig, who pitched the latest project, has signed on to direct, says The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog.

Jason Hall, who penned the upcoming Ashton Kutcher dramedy Spread, will write the screenplay.

Another Robin Hood Movie… Set in a Dystopian Future?

7 August 2009 3:02 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Right about now I don't think there are too many people who feel we need yet another adaptation of Robin Hood, but hey, since when has that ever stopped Hollywood? In addition to Ridley Scott's upcoming film which is currently in production right now with Russell Crowe in the lead role, there was also the recent Robin Hood BBC series, and then of course back in the '90s we had both Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and the Mel Brooks parody Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Nonetheless, producers Charles Roven and Richard Suckle (The International, Scooby-Doo) are determined to put their own twist on the story by moving it to the future. Rocket Robin Hood anyone? According to the Risky Biz Blog [1], Atlas Entertainment and Hollywood Gang have set up the project at Warner Brothers, with Danish commercial director Nicolai Fulgsig signed on to direct.
