  • Canadian actor Lloyd Bochner spoofs his own performance in the famous 1962 episode of "The Twilight Zone" (1959) entitled "To Serve Man" in this picture. In a panicked crowd scene late in the film, Bochner can be seen carrying a large book with "To Serve Man" on the cover and shouting to passers-by "It's a cookbook! It's a cookbook!" which was the final, climactic line of the Twilight Zone episode.

  • The pictures displayed in the Loser's Bar include: the Titanic, the Hindenburg, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the Ford Edsel, the DeLorean DMC-12, the Hubble Space Telescope (considered a failure at the time), Neville Chamberlain and Michael Dukakis.

  • Robert Goulet was one of six "Special Guest Stars" who were "killed off" at the start of episodes of "Police Squad!" (1982).

  • The opening credits sequence ends with Zsa Zsa Gabor slapping the police car. In 1989 Gabor was arrested for slapping a police officer and driving with an expired license.

  • 'Weird Al' Yankovic has a brief role as a thug who holds the police at the precinct at gunpoint. In the scene, he says, "Ok, Pigs, say your prayers!" followed by Frank slamming the door open and knocking Yankovic's character to the floor. Yankovic said it took more than 20 takes to get the scene done, and that after about 16 takes his leg had turned "a nice shade of purple". The stunt coordinator asked Yankovic at that point if he wanted to wear some padding. Yankovic also recalled that O.J. Simpson felt sorry for him.
