"Hearts Of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse" is a stunning, behind-the-scenes look at the filming of "Apocalypse Now", the American masterpiece about one man's mission during the Vietnam War."Apocalypse Now" is a challenging movie on so many levels, but what surprises me is how the filming of the movie was, in many ways, more challenging. "Hearts..." documents all of this, and there's simply too much to cover.I can try to cover the highlights, however. There are actual recorded conversations between Coppola and his wife. Scary things, too, where Coppola sounds tremendously close to a nervous breakdown. He often complains about how he KNOWS he has a bad movie on his hands. He's unsure of the ending (a popular fact among film buffs), whether or not he has the right one, and whether or not it will work.We watch as production goes way over schedule and the budget skyrockets. The Filipino government, who lent helicopters to the crew, needs them back to go fight a war. A young Laurence Fishburne talks about how the Vietnam War must have been a fun time. Marlon Brando shows no enthusiasm, and shows up having never read "Heart Of Darkness." He ad-libs lines because he can't memorize them. He has half-hour days on the set, mumbling for a while, then packing up. It takes serious negotiations for him to even show up on the set, demanding more money even while the movie had started filming.Documentaries are not my cup of tea, but it's hard to turn this one off. It shows how making a movie can take its toll on a person, and how sometimes it's a battle just to get a movie done. This is a stunning movie that will have you shaking your head.
