With the passing of every year comes the arrival and departure of an unfathomable number of films from theatres around the globe where they earned either a lot of or precious little screen time, depending on the circumstances. Notwithstanding smaller budgeted, independent-minded motion pictures that find unexpectedly impressive legs to remain in theatrical exhibition for longer than most would have foreseen (surely including the exhibitors themselves in many cases), it is safe to argue that for the most part, the movies that are awarded the most screenings rooms and screening times are the big budget blockbusters.
There exists a myriad of reasons why it often feels so terribly easy to aim criticisms at these so-called motion picture events. Some of them are related to the perceived quality, others have to do what certain cinephiles with attuned tastes expect from their movie going experiences as patrons. Movies for which so much...

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

This Monday we can welcome Tom Hanks and Jason Statham into our living rooms as well as some smaller films that could be worth your attention. By far the most exciting aspect of the DVD new releases next week belongs to Luc Besson as 6 of his best films are re-issued. One of the 6 happens to be the brilliant Leon starring Jean Reno and a very young Natalie Portman.
Angels & Demons
Dan Brown’s books have sold millions of copies worldwide so the transfer over to film was only a matter of time.
Back in 2006 director Ron Howard made The Da Vinci Code. The critics hated it, the church loathed it but despite all this it still didn’t do that badly at the box office.
The fact is that it’s not an awful film at all. The best way to describe The Da Vinci Code is painfully average. In...

The music of James Bond has topped the charts around the world, as evidenced by this rare Japanese 45 Rpm release of John Barry's famous theme song. By Lee Pfeiffer
Last Friday's tribute to the music of James Bond at Carnegie Hall was a magnificent evening of entertainment. The New York Pops, under the direction of conductor Carl Davis, did justice to the canon of great film themes that have characterized the 007 movies. To the relief of Bond fans, the Pops did nothing to "soup up" the arrangements of the familiar songs, opting instead to perform the traditional arrangements. The two hour-plus event managed to incorporate almost all of the main title themes which were played more or less in sequential order, and it was especially rewarding to hear Burt Bacharach's The Look of Love included, despite the fact that it derived from the mostly-detested 1967 slapstick version of Casino Royale.
