Last night, Marlee Matlin appeared in a Family Guy Presents Seth & Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show sketch (see video after jump) that played her speaking voice for laughs. In an interview conducted via email with EW, the hearing-impaired actress explained why she participated in the skit -- and how it ties in to a new cable series she's developing. Entertainment Weekly: How did you become involved with this special? Marlee Matlin: I had been in touch with Seth MacFarlane's office to ask him to let me use my own voice in the segments where they had a cartoon character based on me. »

While Ricky Gervais is busy working on his routine for hosting the Golden Globes, the folks orchestrating the Academy Awards are feverishly hunting for a host of their own.
Hugh Jackman, last year's master of ceremonies, has already turned down the gig, and now it appears that the dynamic duo of Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. have declined the opportunity to host in tandem as well. The obvious questions is, what is it about the Academy Awards that's putting these prospective hosts off? Does Oscar have something in his teeth?
Maybe it's a simple matter of not asking the right people, since Hollywood has no shortage of talented professionals that could do the award ceremony justice. If I were in charge of selecting a host, here are some of the folks that I'd consider.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Billy Crystal is widely considered »

Gary Shandling: 2 for 2. Two TV shows, two masterpieces. But where more people are familiar with his later Larry Sanders Show, It’s Gary Shandling’s Show has not received the same posthumous praise or attention, partly because it was a Showtime show in the mid to late 80’s, and then began playing on the just-starting Fox network. The show aired for four seasons, and then was out. And to be fair, it ran out of steam, but when it was on, it was one of the most dazzling formalist TV shows to ever air. My review after the jump.
The premise is that Gary Shandling plays himself, and has a platonic female best friend in Nancy (Molly Cheek) and a married best friend in Pete Schumacher (Michael Tucci). Pete’s wife Jackie (Bernadette Birket) eventually gives birth to a second child, who gets named by the audience, and they have »

If you are bored with your Sudoku puzzles and those Mental Jumping Jacks e-mails your great-aunt forwards you so you don't end up in a nursing home like her Alzheimers-afflicted sister, try to identify a single race, religion or creed that Curb Your Enthuasiam has not insulted in the 66 episodes that have aired on HBO. Now midway through its Seinfeld-plated seventh season, one group has had enough, and is protesting Larry David's schtick. »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).
As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.
Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!

**Update** HBO has sent us the following response: "Anyone who follows Curb Your Enthusiasm knows that the show is full of parody and satire. Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious. " --- On Sunday's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' Larry David was taking a "new pill" that caused him to urinate with excessive force. This caused a lot of splash back, some of which ended up on a Jesus painting hanging on the bathroom wall of his pious assistant, who later sees Jesus "crying" and assumes a miracle has taken place. Catholics are not amused. Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said in a statement: Mention Larry David in a word association game and "Seinfeld" rolls off the lips. That show, which David created, wrote and produced, was brilliant. "Curb Your... »

A host of veteran comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Carl Reiner, Sinbad, and Dick Gregory, paid tribute to Bill Cosby as he received the 12th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC Monday night. And while each of them drew laughter from the audience, they were all upstaged by clips from Cosby's TV appearances over nearly a half-century. Even a routine featuring Seinfeld and Rock together fell flat, with Seinfeld acknowledging the fact by remarking that everyone in the audience was probably thinking, "I thought these two guys would be funny together," and Rock rejoining, "But we're not." All of the comics told how they had listened to Cosby's comedy albums as children and how they were influenced by them. All, that is, except 87-year-old Carl Reiner, himself a former Twain Prize recipient, who »

Chicago – A lot of classic TV comedies are often pointed to as being “ahead of their time”. The quirky, weird, and memorable “It’s Garry Shandling Show” wasn’t really ahead of its time because there’s nothing quite like it on the air. The groundbreaking cult classic is now available in a gorgeous 16-disc set from Shout Factory and it’s just what Shandling fans deserve.
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
Between his stint as the heir apparent to Johnny Carson (Shandling guest hosted “The Tonight Show” an incredible number of times) and the pioneering television he would do on one of the best sitcoms of all time, “The Larry Sanders Show,” there was “It’s Garry Shandling Show,” which ran for 72 episodes from 1986 to 1990. The program was the first ever broadcast on Showtime and would later be rerun and more widely seen on Fox.

Is ABC getting Friend-lier or what? Matthew Perry has signed a deal with the network that airs Courteney Cox’s Cougar Town to star in, executive produce, and co-write a potential comedy series about a self-consumed 40-year-old manager of a second-rate sports arena who's reluctantly learning to be a nicer guy. “We’re trying to do a show that’s really, really funny and can slow down and play some heartfelt moments,” Perry tells EW.com. “All of this stuff originally came from watching a lot of Alan Partridge and the British Office, and just wanting to go be funny again. »

Last night's Curb Your Enthusiasm was even more cringe-y than usual, right? Office assistant Maureen's misguided choice in cropped tees was uncomfortable enough (Top o' the muffin To You!"); even I, a longtime fan, was surprised when the only somewhat-accomplished weight-loser ended up saving Larry's life as he clutched her ample love handles from two stories up. Larry's done the "bald people all look the same to you" lament before, but never in the context of a police lineup to prove that black-bald is as indistinguishable from white-bald as Wheelchair Wendy is from Denise Handicapped. And the pissing-on-a-Jesus-painting gag (literally, »

The star of the show and the returning Sharona talk about the final season
The USA Network is gearing up for the series finale of its beloved hit series Monk, which will air on Friday, December 4, and they're bringing back some beloved past characters from the series. Bitty Schram will make her return as Sharona Flemming on this week's episode on Friday, October 23 at 9 Pm Et on the USA Network. Both Shalhoub and Schram participated in a conference call to discuss the series, and here's what they had to say.
To prepare for your role as Adrian Monk on the USA series, Monk, it's reported that you did a substantial amount of research with a Los Angeles psychotherapist specializing in obsessive-compulsive disorder. What was that experience like? Did you have to study someone with Ocd?
Tony Shalhoub: Well, the psychologist that I spoke with and had sessions with just »

Ted Danson's dueling gigs on HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm and Bored to Death have been delightful, and Shelley Long's kooky cameo on Wednesday's Modern Family triggered a still-rolling avalanche of Cheers nostalgia in our offices. But that's not the half of it. Woody Harrelson has a hit movie (Zombieland) and a serious role in a potential Oscar contender (The Messenger); Kelsey Grammer has another new sitcom (Hank); George Wendt has written a barstool professional's guide to beer; Rhea Perlman was hilarious on a recent episode of HBO's Hung; and Kirstie Alley is just a few pounds (lost or »

Chicago – NBC sent over the first two episodes of the fourth season of the Emmy-winning “30 Rock” and, believe it or not, the show may actually be better than when it left the air last spring. Tonight’s premiere is good but next week’s episode is even better with some of the strongest comedy writing of the year to date and amazing work by the standard cast and one of their most talented regular guest stars, Will Arnett.
Television Rating: 4.5/5.0
Tonight’s episode, the fourth season premiere, is a clever satire of not just the show itself but the entire network. (A show-closing jab at “The Jay Leno Show” is a true gem.) “30 Rock” has never set the ratings on fire, appealing more to critics than actual viewers. It doesn’t really have that big a following or audience. And the season premiere brilliantly and subversively plays off the popularity, »
