Monday Night Poll: Silliest Horror Villains

19 October 2009 7:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When it comes to making movies, few things are more subjective than horror. There's nothing that scares everyone, and even if your movie is about something that most people find frightening, that's no guarantee you'll depict it in a way that earns goosebumps. Meanwhile, plenty of good filmmakers have produced terror with things that audiences wouldn't have thought would scare them. (Before Psycho, was anyone ever afraid of showers?) So it's a crapshoot, basically.

Still, some horror films have had villains that they must have known -- or should have known -- wouldn't be scary, no matter how skilled the execution. (And the lousy execution of some of these didn't help.) The Child's Play films got intentionally goofy later in the series, but in the beginning Chucky the murderous doll was actually supposed to be scary, despite being 18 inches tall and weighing only a few pounds. Then there was the title character of Leprechaun, »

Spoiler Guy – Smallville – Julian Sands to Guest Star

11 September 2009 12:42 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Julian Sands (24) will be guest starring on Smallville for one episode in November (entitled "Kandor") as – get this – Jor El, the father of Kal El (aka Clark Kent/Superman).  EW's Ausiello has some exclusive scoop on the new arrival:

Turns out that kneeling-obsessed kook Zod traveled to Earth with some iconic cargo.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Smallville has cast Julian Sands (24, Warlock, a million other things) to play a young Jor-El.

He’ll make his debut in the November episode “Kandor” when it’s revealed that he arrived with Zod and the other Kandorians.

Save for a brief appearance as a vision in season 3, Jor-El has been heard but never seen on Smallville (Terrence Stamp does the voiceover honors).

As of now, Sands is locked in for one episode.

Smallville's ninth season premieres on Friday, September 25. »

The Horrors of Haddonfield: A Halloween Retrospective

5 August 2009 11:31 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Few films garner a strong enough impact to merit a “classic” label. Even fewer obtain followings large enough to warrant the making of nine sequels. John Carpenter is one of the very few in this business who can lay claim to both accomplishments. Though Halloween began as a small independent feature, it’s now grown into an undeniably successful franchise, and with the release of Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 reboot just around the corner, it doesn’t appear Halloween’s momentum is anywhere near slowing.

The Beginning (1978)

In 1978 John Carpenter and Debra Hill poured the artistic cement that would act as a foundation for what would ultimately become labeled horrors slasher sub-genre (there were a few excellent slasher films preceding Carpenter‘s work, but all failed to grab the attention that Halloween captured), a now pivotal piece of the cinematic related horror puzzle. Halloween, was a low budget (the entire »

The Delightfully Prickly Julian Sands

3 August 2009 2:13 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

On the screen, Julian Sands is known for a wide spectrum of roles that make the most of his seemingly contradictory mixture of glowering, antihero intensity and ethereal leading man looks. On the telephone, he presents an equally formidable hybrid: Sands has got delightfully prickly down to an art. The British-born actor, who began his film career in "The Killing Fields" in 1984 and broke through the next year as George Emerson in "A Room With A View," has worked steadily in film and television for the last 25 years, starring in cult classics like "Warlock" and working with directors like David Cronenberg, Mike Figgis and Dario Argento, and gaining a television following with roles on shows like "24." Currently, Sands is starring as expat actor Reg Hunt in IFC's upcoming miniseries "Bollywood Hero." I spoke with him about his career, what sparks his interest in a role, and what audiences want from a golf movie. »

Sex Sells Around The Blogosphere

29 July 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's a sexy day Around the Blogosphere. Only two item to highlight though. I'm not being lazy, it's just that we're pretty darn busy. Plus, I'm going for a theme here. As the above headline illustrates. Is it a coincidence that both of the writers pegged in today's post happen to be MTV writers? Actually yes, yes it is. You can believe me or you can not, but it's the truth.

First we have a list from Christopher Campbell over on SpoutBlog: "10 Actors Who Shouldn't Do Sex Scenes," inspired by an Adam Sandler moment in this week's "Funny People." A moment which doesn't bear repeating here. That's kind of the point with Chris's list. Not that Sandler makes the 10. He isn't even in the running, says Chris. I like that "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe makes the cut. And I agree.

David Twohy To Take Hemsworth, Jovovich, Olyphant And Zahn Away On A ‘Perfect Getaway’

28 May 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I love me some David Twohy. Dude definitely has some clunkers in his portfolio — I’m looking at you, “Waterworld.” I don’t care though. He wrote and directed “Pitch Black,” which also means that Vin Diesel’s Richard B. Riddick character is Twohy’s creation. He also wrote classics along the lines of “Warlock,” “Critters 2: The Main Course” and a little-known movie called “The Fugitive.”

Now Twohy has climbed back into the writer/director’s chair after an extended post-”Chronicles of Riddick” break. “A Perfect Getway,” starring Chris Hemsworth (aka Kenneth Branagh’s Thor), Milla Jovovich, Timothy Olyphant and Steve Zahn, follows a newlywed couple (Zahn and Jovovich) who are off on a hiking honeymoon in Hawaii. Somewhere along the trails they run into some shady hikers and… well… things get weird. Check out the new trailer to see for yourself.

Excited, Nick?

Nick Lyons: I am completely excited. I can’t wait for horror fans and comic readers in general to check out this series. It’s been 10 long years since the last Warlock film and I think it’s time for a new Warlock story!

Fangoria: What was it like writing Warlock? Did you have to brush up on your witchcraft?

Nick Lyons: As a person who tends to gravitate towards villains, I had a great time in writing Warlock. »

Robin Hood: Monster Slayer in Tights?

12 February 2009 2:38 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

If Robin Hood is such a great hero you'd think he'd be able to work in some monster fighting in between all his robbing from the rich to give to the poor. That's why all Robin Hood movies in the past have sucked: lack of monsters. Thank goodness we have the Sci-Fi Channel around to rectify such mistakes.

I'd first heard about Robin Hood: Beyond Sherwood what seems like ages ago. It's only just now that progress is being made. Working from a script by Chase Parker, the writer of such other Sci-Fi offerings as Basilisk: The Serpent King, Reign of the Gargoyles, and the all-time classic Boa vs. Python, actor-director Peter DeLuise ("21 Jump Street", "Stargate Sg-1") helms this ultimate tale of merry ol' England's favorite tights-wearing, forest-dwelling, arrow-shooting, always-sticking-it-to-the-man swashbuckler as he squares off with a fiendish monster brought forth by the Sheriff of Nottingham, now in the post-production phase. »

Review: Private Valentine - Blonde & Dangerous

3 February 2009 5:00 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Recently I got the chance to review a film from director Steve Miner.  If the name sounds familiar, you might remember him from his directorial efforts like Friday the 13th Part II, Friday the 13th Part 3D, House, Warlock, and Lake Placid. Naturally, I was a little bit surprised when ... »
