Night Shadow: Average werewolf effort
Platypuschow13 February 2018
Night Shadows distinct lack of budget is on display and alas really does show, the creators do their best to mask this but the problem is evident.

Telling the generic story of a group of people in small town America during a series of werewolf attacks there isn't anything even remotely on display.

What the movie has going for it however is a decent cast who are well written and thus you actually care to a degree about their fates.

With an anti-climatic finale the movie is the very definition of average. It's not bad by any means but it's instantly forgettable.

The Good:

Likeable characters

Has a certain charm

The Bad:

Lack of budget shows

Hardly original

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

In the movies if you have a mullet you're instantly a bad guy or an idiot

I have no idea why any man would choose to wear vests/t-shirts like bras

In the 1980's ever asian person is a ninja

Tolerable Film You Will Never See
gavin694230 December 2010
Up-and-coming TV journalist Alex Jung (Brenda Vance) returns to her home town of Danford (the film was shot in Hanford) as local police attempt to cope with a series of brutal murders. The small town plunges into a state of panic and the murders continue... until Alex comes face to face with the evil itself.

Some of the hair and clothes are so late 1980s, early 1990s that it is hilarious. The Asian guy has a cut off shirt that looks more like a women's sports bra. And, of course, he knows martial arts...

The blood and gore effects are surprisingly not terrible, and they invested in some live maggots, which I appreciate. I am not going to say this is on the level of, say, Rob Bottin... but it is respectable.

Kato Kaelin, made notorious from the OJ Simpson trial, appears here in all his mullet glory! And Aldo Ray as inventor Gene Krebelski is like a next generation "Gremlins" dad.

The music has Richard Band written all over it, but this is not a Full Moon picture and it is Ken Carlton behind the score. George Temple produced and edited, as well as acted as story consultant.

Pedestrian, TV-budget werewolf flick with a wannabe Bruce Lee
Wuchakk28 September 2017
RELEASED IN 1989 and written/directed by Randolph Cohlan, "Night Shadow" (originally titled "Lycanthrope") concerns a humble Los Angeles newscaster (Brenda Vance) who returns to her home town on vacation as several people crop up dead, as if by a vicious animal. Alta LaFlame plays the sheriff, Rick Scott a mysterious hitchhiker, Stuart Quan the protagonist's kung fuey brother and Kato Kaelin his friend.

This is akin to a modern Syfy creature feature, but with a production quality a notch below that prosaic level. The serviceable score, for instance, sounds like it was performed entirely on a Casio keyboard (and no doubt it was). There's also too much marking time. Still, the cast is likable, the small town setting is quaint and the monster is pretty effective for a man in a suit, but you have to wait till the final act to see him.

Vance is a more-than-agreeable protagonist, but the film drops the ball in the female department, as far as taking advantage of the resources (and I'm not tawkin' 'bout nudity or sleaze). But there's a lot of martial arts action due to the presence of Quan; and the late 80's ambiance is to die for (take, for instance, Quan's absurd bra-like billie shirt and Kato's hideous mullet).

THE FILM RUNS 91 minutes and was shot in Hanford & Fresno in the heart of California.

GRADE: C

Lame Werewolf film.
poolandrews14 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Night Shadow starts in Los Angeles were hot shot TV news-reporter Alexander Jung (Brenda Vance) finishes for the day & begins her vacation, she intends to drive to a small town called Danford where she grew up & still has family & friends there. While driving there Alex notices a strange shabby looking man on the side of the road just outside the town, once there proper Alex meets up with her brother Tia (Stuart Quan) & old acquaintance's including the local Sheriff named Adam (Tom Boylan) who suddenly becomes a very busy man as a series of gruesome murders take place. The county coroner quickly realises that the horrible mutilation suffered by the victims is the work of a large fanged animal of some description, Alex covers the story for her news station while the Sheriff has to track down a vicious killer...

Directed by Randolph Cohlan I thought Night Shadow was not particularly great in any capacity. The script starts off reasonably well, the basic story & premise is quickly set up in a decent enough fashion but then it goes absolutely nowhere until a predictable & throughly standard 'the Sheriff & reporter saves the day' type climax. Night Shadow is supposedly a Werewolf film, however the word Werewolf is never mentioned & it's involvement in the plot is negligible. For all it matters it could have been just about any other sort of cinematic creature/alien/monster/zombie. There is no attempt to utilise any of the traditional Werewolf ideas & themes found in films, the full moon has nothing to do with it's transformations & is never mentioned, there are no silver bullets & there is absolutely no background to the Werewolf or it's human alter-ego whatsoever, he isn't given a single word of dialogue throughout the entire film. How did he become a Werewolf? Whats his plan? Why, in the first half of the film, does he seem to follow Alex around & intimidate her yet by the end of the film he stops & this plot angle comes to nothing? When Tia tries to unblock a sink blood seems to pump from the plug hole, why? It's never explained, also didn't Tia think blood pouring from a sink was a little bit odd? I mean there had been at least a couple of murders in the area so didn't he think it might be relevant to tell the police? There is one scene where a newspaper headline is clearly visible which talks about animal attacks but is never expanded upon, why? What's the point of laying this narrative down & then doing absolutely nothing with it? It just wastes everyones time including mine because I have to sit through it for no good reason! Add to that the middle of Night Shadow is extremely slow & it all makes for a less than impressive 90 odd minutes.

Director Cohlan makes a competent but unspectacular film, there's no real style or visual flair to it. Think cheap made-for-TV film & your there. There's little in the way of scares or horror, things just abruptly happen with no build up at all which means there's no atmosphere or tension. There are a couple of OK action scenes but their OK in a low budget sort of way. There's not much in the way of gore either, there's a trunk full of body parts, there's a bit where someone eats the flesh from a maggot covered severed hand & an almost cool scene where someone has a long pipe stuck through their back & it emerges through their stomach in a decent special effect. The Werewolf effects towards the end of the film are less than impressive, the thing looks like it's wrapped in a shaggy carpet rather than have a coat of fur.

Technically the film is fine but utterly forgettable, totally flat & really bland, I think I'd have completely forgotten it by the end of the week. The acting is OK but I doubt many of the actors here got much work because of their performance's in Night Shadow.

Night Shadow is an average 80's horror film, to be fair to it it isn't the worst film I've ever seen but it just feels so generic, flat, unoriginal, patched together without much thought & lacking ambition. I can't really say I'd be ale to recommend it to anyone, overall I'd say this is probably one best avoided.

Werewolf disaster

Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*

Terrible. Awful. Retching. Nightmarish. Worst movie ever. I mean ever. I have seen some painful films in my day but this is the king. It still hasn't been dethroned.

The video box had a huge werewolf on the cover. Naturally, I couldn't resist. After my brain aneurysm, I returned it and the video store went out of business the next week. I think the store must have been a mirage just to get some sucker to rent this god awful film.

Supposedly there is a werewolf attacking a town. I don't remember seeing one till the very end. Do silver bullets kill the beast? *SPOILER ON ENDING COMING* No! In the final insult, they run over the flea bitten wolf with their car! Must have had silver hubcaps.

Warning: Spoilers
Alex (Brenda Vance) takes a vacation from being an LA newscaster to return to her small home town of Danford. It is clear she is being stalked by a werewolf as folks in town and being killed. It appears as there was going to be some kind of connection Alex who ordered her steak rare and mom who seems to know something, but the plot never went that way. They missed their opportunity. Liked the 80's hair and music.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Mutilations in a small town.
michaelRokeefe9 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Alex Jung(Brenda Vance)is a promising and attractive young TV journalist on her move up. But Alex needs a break; a short vacation back to her hometown. She isn't in town 24 hours before her boss wants her to cover the grisly story of multiple mutilation murders there in her usually quiet little community. The townspeople are plunged into panic when news leaks that the murders may be the work of a savage beast instead of a mortal man. Alex and her karate-stud brother Tai(Dane Chan)team with the town sheriff(Tom Boylan),under pressure, to find the bloodthirsty murderer. Definitely low-budget; but no major scenes of the killer or his deeds. Also in the cast: Rick Scott, Jeanette Lewis, Orien Richman, Alta LaFlame, Aldo Ray and Kato Kaelin(yes...that Kato Kaelin).

Kato Kaelin and his Kung Fu buddy vs a Werewolf
AlLucard22529 November 2022
Night Shadow (1990) Director: Randolph Cohlan Stars: Brenda Vance, Stuart Quan, Kato Kaelin

Synopsis: Alex (Brenda Vance) is an up and coming TV journalist that travels to her home town for a vacation. A mysterious man follows her from L. A to Danford. Back in Danford we meet her kickboxing brother (Stuart Quan) and her "boyfriend", the Sheriff who now has his hands full with a bunch of animal-like murders occurring in town.

The Crappy: The animal costume looks like it was bought at a Halloween costume store and tweaked ever so slightly. And you don't even see it until the very end. It's supposed to be a werewolf but you could really use any creature in its place because the werewolf angle is completely irrelevant to anything in the movie.

The ditzy reporter I think had one blouse change the entire movie - this takes place over a series of days.

The kung fu brother wears this mini tank top that just look completely absurd.

80s hair: Aquanet was a big part of the budget here.

The Happy: Kato Kaelin! Lol. He's one of the kung fu brother's friends and he rocks a wicked mullet throughout. He also has the only good death scene in the movie.

The Kung Fu brother (who reminds me of Phillip Rhee in Best of the Best) has got some decent moves - even though some kicks obviously didn't connect. Lol.

Overall: 3.5 out of 10

This is a pretty weak werewolf flick with a couple of laughs and not much else. Only for werewolf purists and I mean that lightly.

Entertaining and worth while.
ripsurf12 July 2004
The entertainment value on this priceless and timeless movie is beyond words! The actors and actresses do a great job portraying the fear that gets lodged into the people's hearts and minds is fantastic!

That actress that plays Beth could go on to do some superb work, if only someone gave her a chance. She has the look of stardom, and could easily pull off any hard rolls thrown her way. Just because this movie didn't get any awards, doesn't mean that it isn't a great film. The music, the acting, and that werewolf!!! are amazing! Hats off to everyone involved in this movie. I hope all of them go on to great careers in the movie business. Good luck to everyone who worked on this movie, you made a movie that is scary, fun, and exciting for everyone to enjoy. The night we rented this movie was something our family will remember forever, we had so much fun, and for days we repeated scenes to relive the great time we had while watching this movie together. I will always remember this amazing movie and the great time my family had with it! Thanks so much Night Shadow!!

Enjoyed working in this film.
vidmanddm1 June 2005
I had the opportunity to work in this film that was originally titled "Lycanthrope" which means werewolf in Greek. I was the Stunt Coordinator, stunt double, stunt driver and played a biker. We had a couple of good fight scenes, chases, high fall, a crash and car explosion. The acting was surprisingly good without any big names or budget. It was fun to work on. Kato Kaelin was natural in his acting and should have been made known from this instead of the OJ trial. Cohlan and Temple also made a film with Bruce Cooke before this in 1987 called "Line Of Fire", which I also worked on. I don't know if the film is available. Thanks guys for a great start in the beginning of my career. Keep it up!

A Good If Unusual Horror Movie
loveablejohn-466293 March 2019
This movie was made back when movie special effects were done practically instead of using computers so the effects were well done for the time especially the creature plus the cinematography was excellant. But these two things were about the only things that stood out in this movie as the script was poorly written and the acting was average at best. It did however have some Kung Fu fights and no nudity which was unusual in a horror movie in this era.

This film drips cheese!
tcuda7122 February 2002
Warning: Spoilers
What bad movies are all about! Some spoilers below, if you don't want to know, don't read on. This one is a classic. It stars Kato Kaelin and the only thing worse than his hair is his acting. I don't remember much of plot, but there is a really mangy werewolf going around killing folks. Also some really bad kung fu, funny, funny stuff. This film drips cheese, if you can find it I highly recommend.
