Under The Dome (Book Review)

16 hours ago | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Stephen King’s latest novel, Under The Dome, captivates his constant readers with a mesmerizing tale about a group of people in a small town trapped by a claustrophobic dome. The citizens in Chester’s Mill live off of hope that they will eventually escape even though the reality is their communication has been disconnected from the rest of the world.

The story begins from different perspectives of the citizens in Chester’s Mill as they all watch the dome suddenly fall down upon them. They witness several graphic decapitations, fiery explosions, and tragic accidents as the dome sinks through the pavement. Landlines have been cut off and calls from cell phones are being blocked by the surrounding dome. As each day passes, food supply becomes scarce and generators are running low on propane tanks. The citizens of this small town have to band together as a maniacal killer is on the loose inside. »

The Simpsons Review: "Pranks and Greens"

23 November 2009 8:03 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

On this week's episode of The Simpsons, Jonah Hill guest starred in the first of several guest stars signed up to join the cast for season twenty one. So how did Hill and the rest of the episode, "Pranks and Greens," fair in the laughs department?

Well, strangely enough the episode actually gave us some backstory on two of our favorite supporting characters, Skinner and Willie.  While that's rare to say in a Simpsons episode after all these years, we still actually enjoyed that part.

As far as the jokes go, the episode certainly had some moments, and we loved Lisa actually clueing Bart in to what a loser Andy Hamilton (Jonah Hill) was.  What we loved even more?  The meta joke the writers made about TV writers still being losers.

It was an enjoyable episode, but was not even up to par with last week's, "The Devil Wears Nada, »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: On last week’s episode of The Amazing Race, both Sam and Dan’s groin areas were pixelated during their mudflats volleyball game in Tallinn, Estonia – but no one else was. Upon arrival at the mudflats volleyball court, Sam, after a thorough survey of their male competitors, remarked how gorgeous and good-looking they all were in their black trunks. Could it be a case of uncontrolled standing ovation or just attire malfunction? – Anonymous

Sam (left) and Dan McMillen

A: What are you suggesting – that they both had uncontrolled standing ovations? That makes me wonder what’s in the water back in Liberty, Missouri.

But it’s true: plenty of viewers were perplexed by the curious case of the pixilation of the underwear of Amazing Race’s hot gay brothers. »

My Morning Jacket Make Animated Appearance On 'American Dad'

23 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Celebrity appearances on "The Simpsons" are hardly unusual (last night's episode featured a drop-in from Jonah Hill), but the Seth MacFarlane-birthed animated shows ("Family Guy," "The Cleveland Show" and "American Dad") don't tend to have a ton of cameos. However, last night's episode of "American Dad" was built almost entirely around one of the most beloved young rock bands in the country and certainly lent the show some indie cred. The show featured daughter Hayley's sojourn to a My Morning Jacket concert, which Stan initially argues against but then falls completely in love with their jammy style and the pipes of frontman Jim James.

In a particularly amazing sequence, Stan tries to explain what he sees when he hears the band's "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 2" (from last year's smash album Evil Urges, where most of last night's music came from). It involves a vision quest that contains a bunch of owls, »

Another Stephen King TV movie coming

21 November 2009 10:07 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Steven and Stephen are getting together. That is to say that Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks TV are working with Stephen King to make a television movie based on King's latest novel Under The Dome.

The novel is about one of those small New England towns that King enjoys writing about suddenly finding itself trapped in a force field. Unlike The Simpsons Movie, the concept is not played for humorous effect.

The idea is reminiscent of those stories where people are trapped in a confined space and lawlessness sets in. There have been many similar concepts done in TV and film, although I can't think of any particular ones off the top of my head.

As he gets older, King's television presence becomes less. For a few years it seemed like a different TV show based on his work was being produced every year. He may be starting that again. So much for retirement. »

Directors of the Decade: Brad Bird

21 November 2009 7:34 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here. My initial thought for my series on the directors who shaped the past decade was to combine the Pixar guys into one big entry. Five minutes later I was filled with great shame. How dare I think that just because these men make animated films, they don’t deserve their own entries. It was ghettoization all over again! Sure, Pixar films all tend to have similar themes but that doesn’t mean that the great Pixar directors are interchangeable. Over the next few weeks we’ll take a look at them and see what makes them the same and different. First up: Brad Bird.

Number of Films: Two.

Modern Masterpieces: One. With my apologies to The Incredibles, which is an incredible film, the masterpiece is Ratatouille.

Total Disasters: Not even close.

Better than you remember: If you think either of these could be better, you should probably just stop reading now. »

This Sunday, November 22, "The Simpsons" presents the guest voice by Jonah Hill. In "Pranks and Greens" the "Superbad" actor is filling the voice of Andy Hamilton, Springfield's prankster who never grows out of his naughty years.

Fed up with Bart's constant pranks, Principal Skinner tells Bart that there is a former Springfield Elementary student hailed as the best prankster ever - even better than Bart - but he won't divulge the legendary student's name. Bart finally gets Groundskeeper Willie to reveal the prankster's identity: Andy.

Bart tracks down Andy, who is now 19 years old and hasn't grown out of his pranking days. Bart and Andy become fast friends until Bart gets Andy a job working for the ultimate clown.

Spielberg to Join King Under the Dome

20 November 2009 9:05 AM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

According to Empire, Steven Spielberg is set to bring Stephen King's new novel Under the Dome to television.  King's novels have been adapted for television for ages, but never by someone of the caliber of Spielberg, who's also produced Band Of Brothers.

The article notes the uneven quality among TV adaptations of King's work, and mentions the similarity of the novel's plot to The Simpsons Movie, which Mike C. pointed out to me weeks ago.

King and Spielberg are arguably the biggest names in print and film, respectively, over the last 30 years.  I expect lots of people will watch this adaptation, just on the basis of this union.

Steven Spielberg to Produce TV Adaptation of Stephen King’s Under The Dome

19 November 2009 10:28 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Stephen King’s latest, Under the Dome, only came out last week but there are already plans to adapt the novel for TV. Stephen King TV adaptations are rarely anything to get excited about these days since most end up being disappointments, but when Steven Spielberg is the man behind the project everything changes.  The powerhouse duo are now working with DreamWorks TV in setting up an event series based on the recent bestseller, which will most likely be on cable.  You can get all of the details after the jump.

Under the Dome’s story revolves around the drama that unfolds after an invisible force-field suddenly descends on a small vacation town in Maine.  If the plot sounds familiar to you already, it’s because you already saw this situation in The Simpsons Movie.  Having said that, I feel safe in assuming that King’s take on the “dome »

Spielberg And King Join Forces

19 November 2009 10:13 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Stephen King's whopping new novel Under the Dome was only published a week ago, but plans are already afoot to develop it for the small screen. Steven Spielberg will executive produce, along with Stacey Snyder, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Dreamworks TV, and King himself. The novel is a reworking of King's never-published "lost" work The Cannibals, in which the small Maine town of Chester's Mill is suddenly, inexplicably cut off by an invisible forcefield that doesn't allow exit or entry. Trapped inside, the society-in-microcosm starts to unravel.Yes, it sounds like The Simpsons Movie, but it's been hailed in some quarters as a return to old-school King after a gradual shift of direction and focus in recent years, and has drawn favourable comparisons to his much earlier end-of-the-world tome The Stand. King adaptations for TV have been a mixed bag. 'Rocky & Bullwinkle': Happy 50th birthday to the sweet duo! (And Boris and Natasha, too!)

19 November 2009 12:53 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It was exactly 50 years ago today that a little show called Rocky and His Friends debuted on ABC, bringing an animated crew of kooky characters — led by the naive Rocky and Bullwinkle and constantly scheming Natasha and Boris — into the American pop culture menagerie. The genius of Rocky & Bullwinkle, which was so simple in its clever madness, could be easily overlooked, if you wanted. But how many animated series are out there — especially today — that are so sweet and completely watchable? Sure, today on television I delight in the demented social commentary of South Park and the biting hilarity of The Simpsons. »

TV Bites: Ba La La La La La Bomba

· Put down your yellow markers. The Simpsons has already crowned a winner of its 20th Anniversary Simpsons Character Contest. Peggy Black (pictured right, with Simpsons executive producer Al Jean), a Connecticut hospital operations manager and diehard Simpsons fan, beat out over 25,000 characters with her Ricardo Bomba. Bomba, nicknamed La Bomba, is a smooth-talking South American Casanova who works at the nuclear plant and moonlights as a Springfield singles scenester. Bomba will be introduced in a January 31 episode opposite Chris Martin of Coldplay. Black was thrilled with the honor and completely unfazed by the fact that there was no cash prize... partly because she thought she'd get to take home that giant hand with a donut they had her pose with.
