Doctor Who leads Welsh regeneration

31 December 2009 11:01 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

He can travel across time and the universe and has an unlikely ability to regenerate himself, but there is one place to which Doctor Who will always return: Cardiff. And, it seems, plenty more television characters are following him.

The long-running BBC1 drama, in which David Tennant will appear for the last time in the title role tomorrow night, has been based in the Welsh capital since it returned to the small screen in 2005.

Now the streets of Cardiff and some of the most familiar landmarks in south Wales are to appear more frequently on the small screen as a slew of television dramas follow Doctor Who's lead, including a new adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, a remake of Upstairs, Downstairs, and BBC1's long-running hospital drama, Casualty, which is to relocate from Bristol.

Ahead of the opening of the BBC's huge new centre in Salford in 2011, Cardiff currently has »

Holby City's executive producer Tony McHale is to stand down from his role, it has been announced. McHale co-created Casualty's sister show alongside Mal Young, wrote the first ever episode which aired in 1999 and served as the programme's lead writer, before opting to take a break several years later. He then returned in 2006 as executive producer. Speaking of his decision to stand down, he said: "I've had a terrific four years on Holby and am thrilled with what we've achieved. Strictly Come Dancing: live!

21 November 2009 12:21 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Saturday night means spangles, sequins and spinning around the dance floor. Which celeb will be next to go?

All of last week's Strictly action

Ricky Groves survives to dance again this Saturday night afer winning the judges' vote over Phil Tufnell last week. Was that a deserved victory? General consensus on the blog appeared to be not – with Tuffers seen to have been the more consistent performer.

Still, at least Claudia Winkleman proved herself a hit – even if she did show Tess up somewhat, who was (rather oddly) being aided by Ronnie Corbett because obviously you can't leave two women together in charge of a television programme. Bruce should be returning to the programme this week; leaving Winkleman to head back to It Takes Two.

Following the Tuffers' departure, the contestants are also beginning to look a little bit more thin on the ground, with only seven celebrities left: Chris Hollins, »

BBC dance contest Strictly Come Dancing attracts series high of 8.7 million but is still eclipsed by ITV singing show The X Factor

Strictly Come Dancing enjoyed its biggest audience of the seventh series so far but still lagged far behind ITV1's The X Factor in the ratings battle on Saturday 7 November.

The BBC1 celebrity dance show, which saw the exit of Craig Kelly and his dancing partner Flavia Cacace, pulled in 8.7 million viewers and a 38% share between 6.25pm and 8.15pm, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The X Factor, which clashed with Strictly Come Dancing for just 15 minutes, averaged 11.8 million viewers and a 47% share between 8pm and 9.35pm.

Strictly Come Dancing had the better of ITV1's New You've Been Framed! and Harry Hill's TV Burp, which drew 4 million and 5.4 million viewers respectively, while The X Factor beat BBC1's Casualty, which averaged 4.6 million viewers and an 18% share, between 8.25pm and 9.15pm. »

Actor MacCorkindale Has Terminal Cancer

9 November 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Doctors have given British actor Simon MacCorkindale just three years to live after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The 57-year-old actor, best known for his roles in Jaws 3 and U.K. medical drama Casualty, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2006 after complaining of stomach cramps while filming in Bristol, England.

He only disclosed the terrifying news to his wife of 25 years, Straw Dogs actress Susan George, and the pair kept the cancer a secret while MacCorkindale underwent surgery to remove a section of his bowel.

But just a year later, doctors admitted the disease had spread to his lungs and was incurable.

MacCorkindale has revealed medics have now given him just three years left to live.

He says, "It came as a complete bombshell. I thought I had beaten bowel cancer. The oncologist said I had lung cancer - me, who never smoked a cigarette my whole life and always tried to live a healthy lifestyle.

"We thought no one needed to know because, for the first year or so, we didn't think it was that serious. On a more practical level, showbusiness is a difficult place in which to work when people think you're sick. But the news has been slowly creeping out and at least this way we can tell the story in our own words."

And the actor is adamant he will continue fighting the disease. He adds, "I don't want people to think that I'm pale, losing my hair, losing weight and on the way out. I'm not. I'm as active as I've ever been. I really believe we will get through this." »

The Messenger Messages

29 September 2009 7:26 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Tiny distributor Oscillope earned our goodwill less than a year ago by coaxing some theatrical life out of the largely unmarketable but worthy and delicate gem Wendy & Lucy. My how that film lingers. They've just released the poster for their latest release The Messenger. It's the directorial debut of Oren Moverman who previously crafted screenplays for must-see arthouse titles like Jesus Son and I'm Not There.

What message are you getting from The Messenger's poster? I think it's striking. The backwards flag in the title -- nice design element there -- leads me to believe this isn't a happy or blindly patriotic war movie. Yep, it's about an Iraq war vet (Ben Foster) assigned to the Casualty Notification service. I don't like to know any more about plots than that before I see a movie. I hope this doesn't sound callous but I hope Samantha Morton suffers like Job. »
