This movie actually consists of three 30min episodes, two of which were pretty good. The first revolves around an idealistic soldier who's new to the Vietnam scene - you know, the caring farm boy who wants to help the villagers out and get chummy with them. A young (and almost unrecognizable) Wesley Snipes is there to rain on his parade and show this bumpkin the harsh realities war. I thought the acting and story were pretty good - especially the lead - with only a little melodrama over-the-top. Episode 2 has a young Lt. getting 7 days of R&R in Hawaii with his fetching wife (Cynthia Bain - raaaaaar! hubba, hubba!). His experiences in Vietnam, however, have apparently rendered him both impotent and near-comatose and the story deals with his difficulties adjusting to everyday life as well as his inability to communicate with his spouse. Once again, the acting and writing are very solid. My only qualm is that I found it difficult to believe that the Lieutenant's behavior was the norm of most G.I.'s that fought in the Vietnam war. This guy has 7 days alone with Cynthia Bain and he can't even give her one heartfelt hug or he might die when he goes back to Vietnam? I only made it halfway through the 3rd episode. It involved a plot by a bunch of grunts to frag their commanding officer who, they felt, was getting too many of them killed. They acting was so atrociously bad that I began to feel my gag reflex kicking in, so off it went.
So, all in all, pretty good stuff, though Vietnam dramas like this one and others (Platoon, Casualties of War, Hamburger Hill) tend to contain enough general whining and crying to make me wonder if they're really portraying the Vietnam conflict in a realistic light.
