Roy Disney, 'Avatar' And Copenhagen In Today's Twitter-Wood

Roy Disney's death today was big news in Twitter-Wood, where a lot of folks have been affected by his work and commitment to animation over the course of their careers. It's certainly appropriate that "Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich was among the first to post his condolences.
And speaking of animation, Danny DeVito made it onto the guest list for the "Avatar" premiere tonight, and took a picture of his excitable foot to prove it. His "Twins" co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger posted
pic, too, from over in Copenhagen where he's meeting with folks for the U.N. Climate Summit. Not a few critics are calling Up in the Air a film for our times -- while at the same time comparing it with the classic romantic comedies of the ‘30s and ‘40s by Billy Wilder, Leo McCarey, Garson Kanin, Frank Capra, Ernst Lubitch and Preston Sturges. They’re also predicting Oscar nominations for its star, George Clooney, and its writer-director, Jason Reitman. And several have designated it best picture of the year. (Indeed it is being released on the same day that the National Board of Review, the group that traditionally opens the awards season, named it the year’s best.) In the movie, George Clooney plays a “transition specialist” whose job it is to fire people for corporation executives who don’t have the stomach for such business themselves. It marks “the high-water mark in George Clooney’s career,” says Peter Howell in the Toronto Star. At the crosstown Toronto Globe and Mail, Rick Groen comments, “Clooney is made for this role.” Ann Hornaday in the Washington Post judges Clooney to be at the peak of his career. “He operates not just as an actor but also as a finely machined screen object,” she writes. But Reitman garners even more rapturous reviews. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal says that Up in the Air, Reitman’s third feature (after Juno and Thank You for Smoking), shows him to be “a filmmaker of rare distinction.” Claudia Puig in USA Today calls him “a bona fide filmmaking talent ... a modern-day Frank Capra.” Several critics call attention to the fact that Reitman is the 32-year-old son of producer-director Ivan Reitman, whose credits include Animal House, Meatballs, Ghostbusters, Twins, and Junior. In his review of the movie, Roger Ebert notes that the younger Reitman has said that one of the questions he is most often asked in interviews is, “How does your father feel about your success?” Comments Ebert “Bursting with pride, is my guess.”

I've gotta admit, this whole "trollfoot" thing with Danny DeVito freaks me out a little bit. The guy takes a lot of joy in taking pictures of his foot under a variety of circumstances. Now I'm a big fan of DeVito, having grown up with classics like "Ruthless People," "Other People's Money," "Throw Momma From The Train," "Twins" and, of course, "Batman Returns." This whole foot thing though... it's just straight weird.
Then again, when you're as successful as DeVito's been -- and as consistently entertaining -- it's easy to overlook the odd quirk. In addition to his acting career, which has gotten a second wind from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," we're talking about a guy who served as a producer on such fine works as "Garden State," "Gattaca" and "Pulp Fiction." Still... this foot thing is strange. Especially when it's dressed up like a rooster, as you'll see

Before the Best Director nomination, before Up in the Air, Juno, Thank You For Smoking and even his wonderful short films, director Jason Reitman appeared as an "actor" in a bunch of films. In the 1980's and 1990's, Jason's father, director Ivan Reitman, gave him small cameo roles in some of his movies. Jason played Granger Grandson in Twins, Brownstone Boy #2 in Ghostbusters II, the Vice-President's son in Dave, the Wrong Kid in Alley in Father's Day, and most importantly Kissing Boy in Kindergarten Cop.
InContention has dug up the tape of Reitman's appearance in the 1990 Schwarzenegger comedy and put it online for all to see. In the scene, Arnold's character Detective John Kimble is searching the school hallways, when he bursts into an abandoned class room, interrupting two youngsters making out.
This was Jason Reitman's first kiss. Not just his first on screen kiss... but his first kiss with a girl,

Blogger Kristopher Tapley, of the movie awards site In Contention, shares a humorous video spotlighting one of this year's Oscar hopefuls, Jason Reitman. The young filmmaker, who already received an Academy Award nomination for directing Juno, is a front-runner this year for helming Up in the Air, which opens in limited release next week and opens nationwide on Christmas.
Before he was a success behind the camera, though, he was simply the son of Hollywood director Ivan Reitman. And like many filmmakers' kids, he was employed in minor roles in his father's films, including Ghostbusters II, Twins and Dave. The funniest of his cameos is in this make-out scene from Kindergarten Cop, mainly because it's his most embarrassing.

This morning's Daily TwitPic is a little bit deep cut. You should know who Danny DeVito is. Even if you're not old enough to remember comedy classics like "Twins," "Ruthless People" or "Batman Returns" (he was The Penguin!), not to mention the hit TV series "Taxi," he's still sitting in the public eye thanks to the success of FX series "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." It isn't too sunny in Philly this morning though. Go Yanks!
But I digress. Today's Daily TwitPic sees DeVito sitting down for a photo op with an old friend, perennial "that guy" actor Tracey Walter. Seriously, you've seen him before. Walter actually beat DeVito to the "Batman" franchise, playing The Joker's top henchman in the first movie, directed by Tim Burton. He has appeared with DeVito in a number of films though, including the awesome, ridiculously underrated dark comedy "Death to Smoochy."

Editor's note: There were apparently some technical difficulties last night, as Twitter-Wood never ran. So in lieu of today's Daily TwitPic, here's a special morning edition of Twitter-Wood for 9/14/09.
The Vma's trended nearly as well in the Twitter-Wood feed last night as they did on Twitter, and if you've had any internet access over the last 24 hours you probably know that a lot of that was provoked by Kanye West's unexpected interruption during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech. Elizabeth Banks, Kat Dennings, John Stamos and others contributed to the online conversation that followed, expressing their thoughts on his interjection.
Football was pretty popular last night as well, and if you didn't know that Ashton Kutcher was a Bears fan, you do now, thanks to Demi Moore's photo tweet of her defeated fan-husband after the Green Bay Packers stuck it to Chicago in the fourth quarter. Check out all of those posts,

"Twilight" frustrations bubbled up in the Twitter-Wood feed today, though I'm not sure what some of them were about precisely. David Slade reiterated his irritation at planes flying over his "Eclipse" set, which may have been compounded by problems involving goats. Meanwhile, Christian Serratos cryptically sounded off with her desire to see "New Moon," which apparently she is not allowed to do quite yet.
Elsewhere, photos from Eliza Dushku and Emmy Rossum showed up with flannel shirt thoughts and a mysterious coconut left in the back of a taxi cab. You really don't know where that's been, Emmy. (Be safe.) Sarah Silverman wins the Twitter Pic of the Day award, though. Click on down, and I think you'll see why. It's in the Twitter-Wood report for September 11, 2009.

Now that Ben Lyons has gotten the boot from At the Movies, we no longer need to yell, "You lie!" at our TV screens each week. And with summer behind us, let's see what's shaking this week on the big screen.
Opening on 9/9/09 was, of course, 9, a bleak but beautiful animated feature about doll-like creatures — they're already calling the style of this stop-motion animated feature "stitchpunk" — fighting for survival in a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape.
While the storyline didn't thrill me, I was taken by director Shane Acker's stunning visuals and by his ability to create distinct personalities for his lead characters (who all have names such as 9, 2 and 6).
He's helped greatly with the latter by a terrific cast of actors, including Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Connelly and Crispin Glover. 9 is way, way too bleak and disturbing for little kids — who should totally see

Dane Cook has a proposal today for Ellen DeGeneres' replacement on "Ellen," now that she's going to be busy judging on "American Idol." Check it out, and see what you think. Cook leads the Twitter-Wood playlist today, right ahead of "Sorority Row" star Leah Pipes and Selena Gomez, who misses Freddie Prinze Jr.'s TV show "Freddie."
Eddie Izzard, Ice-t and previously featured photo subject Steve Agee all entered the running for the Twitter Pic of the Day today -- and though only one could come out on top, I've ranked them below, eventually giving Izzard the break because, well, he's run 39 marathons now, and that's worth acknowledgement. I'm pleased to report that things are back to status quo. Last week's top stories were relatively free of "Twilight" news but we're back on track this week thanks to the barrage of images and news that emerged. We'll get to that in a minute though. First let's wrap up the weekly box office poll.
There was a big voter turnout this week, though nearly all of your votes went to one of the two horror releases: "Halloween II" and "The Final Destination." Rob Zombie's flick edged out "Destination," with 60% of the vote compared to the other's 38%. The remaining 2% is spread across the rest of the choices, with no clear leader among them. Now that that's out of the way, let's see what your clicks favored...

Before Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger presided over the state of California, he was an actor. If you're old enough to read this, then you probably know that. After all, Schwarzenegger wasn't just an actor... he was The actor. The one-time Mr. Universe spent much of the '80s and '90s as Hollywood's go-to action hero. He never quite managed to shake the thick Austrian accent, but that was in many ways part of the charm.
Today is Governor Schwarzenegger's birthday. He turns 62 and looks pretty much like you would expect a 62-year-old former Mr. Universe and former action star to look: fit as a fiddle. In honor of the Governator's special day, I'd like to take a moment to look back at some of the significant things he left us with before turning his attention from acting to politics.

Danny DeVito will be at Comic Con this year, we presume to connect with all those legions of Twins fans out there. He.ll also hang out to conduct a panel on his new horror website The Blood Factory, a place filled with short horror films he calls .Splatter cuts..

DeVito Scared By Killer Scorpion

A terrified Danny DeVito feared he was staring death in the face when he came across a killer scorpion in his bedroom during a recent vacation in Costa Rica.
The pint-sized Twins star was warned about one particular poisonous stinger before his trip - and couldn't believe it when he found the creature scuttling across his floor.
He says, "They say these things (scorpions) will get into your clothes, you gotta check your boots... Some of them are, like, little tiny things that can't hurt you and other ones are so poisonous you drop like a stone.
"I'm sitting there in shorts, no shoes and socks, on the edge of the bed looking at the computer and my focus goes to the floor because there's some movement. And there is a scorpion... with the coloration of the one the guy said would kill you!
"I immediately leap onto the bed... and I'm hyperventilating, and the thing is coming towards me."
The scorpion shuffled off under furniture and DeVito decided to test his "zen" skills - by trying to reason with his uninvited guest.
He adds, "I get down (from the bed), I say, 'Look, to hell with this...' and I start talking to the teak wood.
"I say, 'Look pal... I know you don't wanna bite me, you don't wanna kill me, and I don't wanna kill you - and I mean it from the bottom of my heart... You just walk out that door.'
"He starts walking very tentatively towards the door... He goes out the door."

Danny DeVito has brushed off reports he was boozing during a bizarre U.S. TV interview on Wednesday - insisting he was only "acting".
The Twins star shocked morning viewers in Philadephia, Pennsylvania by belching his way through a lewd live interview on the set of his sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
In an awkward moment, DeVito hit on the local TV female reporter, noting, "You wore that short skirt, which is really nice... Easy access."
His inappropriate behaviour and remarks prompted the host to ask the actor if he was intoxicated on the early morning beer he was drinking on set. But the actor insists he was clean and sober when the cameras were rolling.
He tells Radaronline.com, “I was only trying to make a TV interview fun. In the scene the TV people were covering, my character was drinking (pretend beer). When you see the scene on the show... you will understand. It’s called acting.”

Actor Danny DeVito is turning the life of a shamed U.S. consumer electronics mogul into a movie.
The Twins star has signed up to direct Crazy Eddie - based on the entrepreneur Eddie Antar, who built up a successful empire with the Crazy Eddie chain, only to end up serving a six year prison sentence for fraud. He was freed in 1999.
DeVito will take charge of the project, while 21 writer Peter Steinfeld will pen the script.
