It took about ten minutes for me to realize that Pursuit was going to be an epic shitshow. That’s how long it takes to get to the first shootout. Between the overuse of slow motion, blood that looks like red paint and a pile of cash that explodes into the air for no apparent reason it’s more laughable than funny.
As it turns out Rick Calloway has just shot up an undercover police operation. Why? Because the same dealers the police were targeting apparently were involved in the disappearance of his wife. So, being an expert hacker he disabled the police cameras and went in shooting. After a chase through Little Rock pretending to be the Big Apple in which...

The "Avatar: The Last Airbender" franchise has been experiencing a surge in popularity in recent years, what with the announcement of two different new TV projects and a planned film trilogy, the bouncing of the original series between different streaming homes as a subscription draw, the creation of a Nickelodeon division focused specifically on "Avatar"-related content, and the "Avatar: Braving the Elements" rewatch podcast hosted by Zuko and Korra themselves, Dante Basco, and Janet Varney. Finally, after many years of insufficient cultural and critical attention paid to what's inarguably one of the best and most beloved fantasy TV franchises of all time, it appears that the industry, the press, and the world at large are catching up to the greatness of Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko's creation.
Even so, a lot of that renewed attention has been directed towards "The Last Airbender," with its sequel series, "The Legend of Korra,...

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into Death Valley. On the one hand writer/director Matthew Ninaber also wrote and directed the underwhelming Transference and Extraction Day. On the other hand, he was the guy inside the suit of the titular creature in one of my favourite films of the year, Psycho Goreman. So he should know a thing or two about making a practical monster movie, right?
Death Valley opens, not in the California desert as you might expect, somewhere in Eastern Europe as an unknown man flees an underground research facility going into lockdown. This leaves Dr. Chloe (Kristen Kaster) trapped inside. She sends out a distress call and grabs a fire axe to deal with whatever it is that we hear in the darkness.

The best thing about vessel bound horror is the dearth of escape routes; hide in a cabin, behind a mast, or head over the side – these are your viable options. This is also the worst thing about same; fewer options can lead to repetition which can lead to boredom. So then, the bigger the vessel, the bigger the hellscape, and when you throw in some creepy Nazi haunting, you end up with Death Ship (1980), an oddly compelling thriller that plays like The Poseidon Adventure meets The Evil.
Okay, that’s a little bit of a sizzle sell; Death Ship doesn’t have the scope of the former or the effects of the latter, but it does achieve a grimy buzz as it progresses. Released by Avco Embassy in early March stateside, critics hated it and audiences failed to come aboard; it only brought in about a third of its $4.5 million dollar budget.

Cult film lovers should get those wallets ready, as Kino Lorber is keeping busy with The Terror Within II, Revenge of the Dead, and a 4K special edition of RawHead Rex, too.

The Legend Of Korra has moved online just in time for this season to deliver one of its best episodes...
This review contains spoilers.
3.9 The Stakeout
The first episode of Legend Of Korra to be released solely online is easily one of the best episodes we've had in a while. Its focus on its core characters and its villain continues the trend of focused, slimmed down episodes that are really showing just what these writers can do when they're zeroed in on their task.
The revelations about the White Lotus's history and how the Red Lotus came into being is fascinating enough to warrant a series of its own, in my opinion. I thought the use of Bolin and Asami's games of Pai Sho was a clever way to make the point: the game can be played strategically or by chance. The White Lotus wanted balance and order. The Red Lotus wants chaos.

This week's Legend Of Korra regains some much-needed focus, says Kaci. Here's her review of The Terror Within...

This review contains spoilers.
3.8 The Terror Within
This week's episode of The Legend of Korra is exactly what I want from this show right now. Clear, concise, and to the point. I try not to compare this show with its predecessor, but I will say that the biggest difference between them, at least for me, has been that Avatar was a much more focused show, whereas Korra often feels like being pulled in many different directions and wandering down various paths rather than strolling confidently down one. This episode, however, thrives by narrowing down to one thing: Zaheer and his gang versus Team Avatar.
It's been said that when plotting out a story, you should be able to transition between scenes by saying, "and so because of that" or "as a result,...

The Legend of Korra will not be televised — at least not after this Friday.
The animated series’ creators have confirmed rumblings (started at NickAndMore.com) that Korra will have its final Nickelodeon broadcast this Friday at 8/7c — with Episode 8, “The Terror Within” — before moving Book Three’s final five episodes online, including to Nick.com.
“Korra is Not cancelled,” the KorraNation Tumblr site reports. “The remaining episodes will roll out weekly on Nick.com and the Nick app beginning August 1, as well as on platforms like Amazon, Google Play, Xbox and Hulu.”

Nickelodeon announced that it is pulling Legend of Korra off the air due to low ratings, which is disheartening in it's own right, but will apparently still be available as an all -digital series now. Come inside to check out all the details and our thoughts on the move.
The news came suddenly as Sdcc is to officially start today. While fans of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra make the annual once-a-year pilgrimage to visit with the creators first-hand, it seems this visit may include a mild case of Brown Coat rage.
Co-creator Bryan Konietzko asks fans to not panic or get upset and that all will be explained at the Avatar/Korra panel scheduled for this Friday. On his Tumbler page, is posted the following image.

Corman’S World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel
Featuring: Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Peter Bogdanovich, Jack Nicholson, Dick Miller, Robert DeNiro, David Carradine, William Shatner | Directed by Alex Stapleton
Roger Corman is perhaps the most prolific and influential Hollywood filmmaker in the history of the medium. His immeasurable imprint on American cinema not only spans over six decades but has resulted in creating an indelible cinematic body of work as well as a legacy of training the next generation of actors, writers, directors and producers – many of whom have created cinema masterpieces of their own – including many listed above!
I’m a huge fan of exploitation cinema, I have been my entire movie-watching life. After all I grew up in the video generation – a generation in which lurid VHS boxes promised more than the movies within contained and a time when my movie experiences influenced the types of films I relish in and enjoy today.

I love a good B-movie and one of my all-time favourite B-movie maestros is the legendary Roger Corman, I grew up watching many of his straight to DVD produced sci-fi and horror movies in the 80s and those films – such as Galaxy of Terror, Deathstalker, Forbidden World, The Terror Within and Humanoids From the Deep to name a few – are still cherished favourites today. In fact one of my all-time Top 20 favourite movies, Battle Beyond the Stars, came from Corman. He was also responsible for producing the awesome Bloodfist series of martial arts movies which starred Don “The Dragon” Wilson – another fave of mine!
Which is why I’m super-excited to see the Alex Stapleton directed documentary, Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel; and whilst the film hasn’t been announced for the UK as yet, I can at least satiate my Corman-induced hunger with the news that...

You probably all know from reading my reviews here on Blogomatic3000 that I love a good B-movie. Now that may be a huge blockbusting B-movie like Transformers or a straight to DVD, unseen by many B-movie like the recent flick Monster Mutt, but they’re all B-movies nonetheless. Shout! Factory delivers another dose of Roger Corman goodness with a fun double feature. Though not as enjoyable as his releases from the 80's, this disc provides a terrific history lesson on how exploitation films changed in response to both an evolving market (B-movies were having a harder time getting a theatrical release) and the MPAA's ongoing smackdown on gore and nudity.
First up is The Terror Within, a post-apocalyptic creature feature. The film starts with two scouts from an underground Mohave Desert research facility hunting for food. As they communicate with the base, we find out that the accidental release of a bio-weapon has killed about 99 percent of the world's population. A few of the survivors, however, have mutated into monsters dubbed "gargoyles." And that's what the scouts run into. Prompting the facility leader (George Kennedy) to send out David (Andrew Stevens) and his girlfriend Sue (Starr Andreeff), along with their trusty dog Butch,...

The Films:
Shout! Factory is releasing plenty of Roger Corman titles (mostly produced) via these Double Feature DVD releases, and this time they pair up two lesser known titles from the late 1980s/early 1990s period, certainly a long time after his producing heyday of finer sci-fi/horror films. Both films collected here, The Terror Within (1989) and Dead Space (1990) have a common link of being Alien-copycats.
First, The Terror Within. This film is pretty fun, despite it’s odd amalgamation of Mad Max, Alien, and the film Alien copied from, It! The Terror from Outer Space. We’re really left in the dark about the origin of the film’s setting. You see, our protagonists are in an underground bunker, seeking survivors from something that eradicated Earth’s population, andwhen the find a survivor – she could be the cure! – there’s something just not right. Burbank - Traci Lords was the biggest name in showbiz in 1986, but for all the wrong reasons. She had become a major star in the adult industry. Her run started as Penthouse Pet of the month for the issue that exposed Vanessa Williams in September of 1984. Dozens of video titles appeared as she became the it girl noted for her youthful looks.
There was a reason for her looking so young: she’d used fake IDs to appear 20. She was under 18 in dozens of her adult films. Only one was made after she turned 18. The FBI and other police agencies poured over the valley investigating everyone connected to the industry. In the midst of this ugliness, Traci Lords still dreamed of being an actress. Luckily she found entry into the profession through the gates of Roger Corman’s studio.
She was signed to remake Not of This Earth with Jim Wynorski directing.

This week's DVD and Blu-ray offerings are no longer a cash-sucking onslaught like the last few weeks, which does make it easier for our wallets.
First up, Centurion, Neil Marshall's fun epic, is finally available for us to take home, and we can definitely recommend it with good conscience. Also, series and movies from TV and their dead-tree companions are out, and they are surprisingly decent in this batch. (Well, one re-release is surely capitalizing on the popularity of its actor, and we bet you can figure out which one that is.) Finally, don't forget the duo release of a couple of Roger Corman flicks!
