Back in 1990, legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley – whose many horror movie credits include The Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, Witchtrap, Graduation Day, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Nightmare Sisters, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and Silent Night, Deadly Night – made her own hour-long, horror-themed workout video. A release that was appropriately called Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout… and which has now been given a special edition Blu-ray release! Copies can be purchased at This Link.
Directed by Kenneth J. Hall, Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout has the following synopsis: After a nice shower, Linnea does some warm-up stretches and then goes for a run. She encounters some flabby zombies who follow her back to the house, where she leads them in some poolside aerobic routines. Later she unwinds by inviting some girlfriends over for a slumber party and some exercise.

There’s a scene in “The Rocketeer,” Disney’s big budget would-be blockbuster from the summer of 1991, that ranks among the most profoundly strange and transfixing moments in the studio’s storied history.
The scene, which takes place in 1938, unfolds right before the movie’s big, fiery climax at L.A.’s Griffith Observatory. Our hero, L.A. stunt pilot-turned-makeshift-superhero Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) is in the office of Howard Hughes (a perfectly cast Terry O’Quinn). Hughes, it turns out, is the inventor of an experimental rocket pack that Secord has happened upon and utilized in a series of exciting action sequences. The FBI is there too. Hughes wants his rocket back, stressing how potentially dangerous it is, especially if it fell into the wrong hands. Secord wants to keep it.
To underline his point, Hughes shows Secord a film. “Keep watching, kid. It cost a man’s life to get this out of Germany,...

Hailed upon its release as a new-wave twist on the traditional Cantonese horror picture, “The Imp” may incorporate a number of characteristics of the movement but also boasts aesthetics that remind of grindhouse movies intensely.
Ah Keung, a man in his thirties, is looking for a fulltime job to support Sau-lan, his wife, and child-to-be, but the interviews he attends are either for jobs he is under qualified (one interviewer is evidently disappointed he does not speak Japanese) or rather unlucky (the man who was supposed to interview him turns up dead in a violent crime). Furthermore, and despite his spouse’s pleads to take up a job at her father’s bra factory (a sample of Yu’s subtle humor) he denies to do so, wishing to be his own man. Eventually, he manages to find work as a night security guard for a mall/office complex. However, as...

If you grew up reading Darkside Magazine in the early 90s and regularly frequented your local video rental shop, as I did, you couldn’t help but know all about the UK VHS label Colourbox. Not a huge distributor, at least compared to others at the time, Colourbox were probably one of the most iconic – at least for me – VHS labels the UK had; and that’s mainly thanks to the fantastic line-up of films they released on VHS: Bad Blood, Bad Taste, Creepozoids, Dr. Alien, The Imp, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (though without the word “chainsaw” in the title thanks to stupid UK censorship at the time), the ever-awesome Intruder and Ghosthouse.

Hong Kong is always on the edge of destruction. Almost as long as it has been a city, it has been in crisis. World War II and the subsequent Chinese Civil War saw a massive contraction and then expansion of its population, flooding the then-colony with an nigh unsustainable number of refugees. They were packed into hellishly inadequate housing and given jobs (when they could find them) at the lowest rungs of laissez-faire industry. As one generation transitioned to another and the colony’s economy boomed, massive scandals came to light of corruption and interconnection between the police force and the criminal gangs that dominated the still-nightmarish warrens where the city’s poor still lived. Then, in 1984, the British and Chinese governments agreed that Hong Kong would be returned to Mainland control before the end of the century. This set the clock ticking on the potential end of all that Hong Kongers had built,...

When people think of VHS-era scream queens three names come to mind: Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer and Brinke Stevens – the threesome of fear that sliced and seduced a generation of gorehounds and whose greatest hits can finally be seen in HD in this set, The Best of 80s Scream Queens, which comes from the schlock-lovers at 88 Films. This charming and chilling collection, perfect for addicts of excessive violence, gratuitous nudity and breathtaking bloodshed, all stem from the hand (and mind) of legendary director David DeCoteau and each nostalgic pot-boiler is packed with an enthusiastic fondness for breast-baring babes and skull-bashing set pieces!
Nightmare Sisters
Stars: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, Michelle Bauer, Richard Gabai, Marcus Vaughter, William Dristas, Jim Culver | Written by Kenneth J. Hall | Directed by David DeCoteau
Melody (Quigley), Marci (Stevens) and Mickey (Bauer) are your typical geeky college girls who just can’t seem to find a man.

Melody (Quigley), Marci (Stevens) and Mickey (Bauer) are your typical geeky college girls who just can’t seem to find a man. When their fellow sorority sisters leave to have parties and spend time with their significant others, the nerdy trio are left to their own devices and decide to have a little party of their own. With slim pickings in the male department, they call the equally geeky Kevin (Gabai) to come over with his friends Freddy (Vaughter) and Duane (William Dristas – in his only role). It seems perfect; three boys, three girls and a house to themselves. That is until they decide to have a séance with a crystal ball that flea market obsessed Marci bought earlier that day. Reviews like this are tough, because a movie like Return of the Living Dead has been discussed-to-death on the internet for at least the last two decades. What can one possibly say that another hasn’t already? In addition to that, this is also the third Blu-ray release of the film I have seen. There was the disappointing MGM release in 2010, and then much better Second Sight release from the UK that dropped in 2012 and resurrected the original audio track containing the songs that were cut from the Us release. And here comes Scream Factory to topple them all. Sorry to spoil my review, but this is the definitive Blu-ray release of Return of the Living Dead. I have never seen this movie look so beautiful in all the years I have watched it. Couple with that, the fact that there are several audio options for you to choose from,...

Chris Alexander has snapped up some of the coolest jobs in horror journalism, and now he's creating cool new ones to take on as well. After a stint writing for Rue Morgue magazine, he moved on to become editor-in-chief at Fangoria, building a résumé between the two that is enough to make the rest of us genre hacks jealous. But then he went and resurrected Gorezone (which he edits), and now, in conjunction with horror/exploitation film legend Charles Band, he's helped create (and edit) Delirium, a magazine devoted to the film catalogs of Empire Pictures and Full Moon. It's with tongue planted firmly in cheek that I talk of jealousy, of course; Alexander is in the position(s) he's in through a combination of talent, hard work and an absolute love of the stuff he's writing about. That love shines through in Delirium #1, a debut issue that's as bold,...

Since horror, as a genre, tends to have a smaller viewing audience than action films, romantic comedies, and tear-jerking love stories, it seems like the available titles are at a higher risk for going on manufacturing moratorium. When that happens, fans of the genre frequently turn to eBay bidding wars, scouring pawnshops, and even trying to locate bootleg copies of the title in question for no less than a king’s ransom. Vigilant collectors, such as myself, tend to keep an eye on titles we suspect are at risk for going out of print... for example, Code Red and Blue Underground both tend to have a good number of titles go out of print at any given time. Staying on top of titles destined for moratorium makes the cash one must fork over for a copy of an in-demand title much less painful; often when a film first falls out of production,...

One of the first and most popular “Scream Queens” from the 1980’s was a girl from Iowa who moved to Los Angeles in the late 70’s with her family. Linnea Quigley started with small roles in even smaller films but she built up her resume and got her big break playing “Trash” in Return of the Living Dead (1985). Since then, she has amassed a wealth of films that cemented her status as a B-movie queen, including roles in such films as Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama (1988), Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), Nightmare Sisters (1988), Night of the Demons (1988), Vice Academy (1989), and many others.
Linnea, along with fellow B-movie actresses Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer were responsible for establishing their Scream Queen status in the 80’s with a prolific resume of horror, sci-fi, and cult film appearances that hasn’t really been equaled since. Whenever anyone...

A little while back I sounded the Liberal Dead Red Alert when an indie director, Theo Lemasters, fell into dire straits regarding the budget for his film, Demonic Aborted Sewer Fecal Fetuses Revenge. Though we gave it our best, we were unable to reach the quota of Facebook fans necessary to acquire funds to pay for the movie. Undeterred, Theo continues in his valiant quest to produce Dasffr, and is scheduled to shoot sometime next spring. However, we here at Tld feel a need to shine the spotlight once more, to give Theo the promotion he deserves. Take it away, Mister Lemasters!
Adam Mudman – First things first, Theo—what is your background on horror films? What sorts of movies did you watch as a kid?
Theo Lemasters – It’s the standard story…I was one of those kids running around in the mid-late ‘80s VHS tidal wave, watching everything I could get my hands on.

Director David DeCocteau will always hold a special place in my heart for the gonzo exploitation classic Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama.
That 1988 Up All Night mainstay featured, among other things, an evil imp, topless chicks, a spirited performance by Linnea Quigley and a blissfully sardonic tone. While much of his work throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s would feature similar elements (many under Charles Band’s Full Moon banner), something happened around the new millennium that would define his work throughout the following decade. An emphasis on male erotica completely changed the vibe of his patented brand of heterosexual T&A entertainments. I have to admit, even as a gay horror fan, this change was a bit unnerving and not a little confusing.
After watching his 2003 opus Leeches!, which centers on a college male swim team and their efforts to stay alive during a campus infiltration of steroid-fueled flesh-eating leeches,...

A true Scream Queen can't just shriek, cry and cower -- she's got to know how to fight to the death if need be, digging deep to find previously unknown survival skills. A Scream Queen might not be the last one standing, but you know she looked good while she was standing ... and being chased … and dragged … and bludgeoned.
"Scream 4" slices its way onto DVD and Blu-ray this week, and Ghostface has some new ladies who he wants to hear scream, namely "Heroes'" Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts of "Nancy Drew" fame.

"Hey, somebody get some light over here; Trash is taking off her clothes again." I remember those words like it was yesterday. And I should; I watched that scene of Linnea Quigley disrobing enough times to render my VHS copy of The Return of the Living Dead basically unwatchable. At least for that minute or so of the film. And it's with loving memories like this one that we celebrate our favorite scream queens in two new projects dropping this fall.
Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era follows the careers of three of the best -- Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, and Brinke Stevens -- in all their shrill glory.

Well, here's one from Empire that I bet you probably missed; Dr. Alien. David DeCoteau has just completed filming on his new film, Cougar Cult, a project that reunites him with the original “Scream Queens” of horror — Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer. The is the first time the ladies have been cobbled together in the same flick since DeCoteau’s 80′s favorites Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama (retrospective here) and Nightmare Sisters.

David DeCoteau Legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens (Teenage Exorcist, Haunting Fear) announced on her official Facebook wall that this week she is reteaming with cult director David DeCoteau (Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama) to star in "Cougar Cult".
Cougar Cult starts filming this week. The film will reunite Brinke Stevens with fellow scream queen alum Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons, The Return of the Living Dead) and Michelle Bauer (Nightmare Sisters, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers).
It's nice to see David DeCoteau getting back to his scream queen roots after spending over a decade with scream twinks in such efforts as Voodoo Academy and The Brotherhood. Or maybe given the title, he plans on merging the two together in one film? We'll just have to wait and see....

Remember back when you was a kid growing up and how you would look forward to the next installment of either A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th starring two iconic horror film villains in the form of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees? Me personally, as a kid, I saw horror thrive, I saw it die out and I saw it come back to life with Scream. I remember as a kid getting excited over such horror films as Popcorn, The Gate II: Trespassers, Ghost in the Machine, Night of the Demons 2, Prom Night III: The Last Kiss, Waxwork, ....heck even stuff like Jack O got me excited. I guess it started back when I was a kid. I was always taking note of whatever horror film was coming out and making sure I knew when it was going to hit video (our theater only played two movies,...

1313: Giant Killer Bees! A DVD release date along with a listing of the various cable companies (see below - after the jump) that will be airing 1313: Giant Killer Bees was officially released by director David DeCoteau. DeCoteau is the the director behind such cult classics as Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama and The Brotherhood. 1313: Giant Killer Bees carries on in the tradition of The Brotherhood by featuring several visually pleasing young men strip down to their boxer briefs while having to fend off zombies and, of course, giant killer bees. Expect another campy Z-grade, but entertaining, flick that's sure to please fans of the director.
1313: Giant Killer Bees, which arrives to DVD August 1, involves Professor Bensington who laments over his role in the end of the world and reveals to us what caused the horror. His research assistant, a young college student named Redwood, travels...

Anyone who reads this site knows my love for 80′s horror films is beyond huge, especially the ones that starred the sexy trio of Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley, and Michelle Bauer. Brinke and I did a retrospective on Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama when I was just starting out with my Late Night Classics column. Documentary filmmaker Jason Paul Collum embraces his love for the same type of cinema with Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era. Love him or hate him, one thing is for sure: Director David DeCoteau is a legend in the horror entertainment field. That can't be denied. He's the man responsible for 80's camp classics such as Nightmare Sisters and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama. Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama gathered a once in a lifetime B movie cast including Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (Grandma's House), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Robin Stille (The Slumber Party Massacre), Hal Havins (Night of the Demons), and George 'Buck' Flower (They Live). While Sorority Babes was one of the most downright fun horror films of the 80's, another element stood out about the film, one that would go on to shape and define David DeCoteau's career. See, David DeCoteau cast this complete unknown named Andras Jones in the lead role. Right off the bat, you could...

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Assault of the Killer Bimbos, Dr. Alien, Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge, Ghost Writer, Circuitry Man, Creepozoids, Dream A Little Evil, Nightmare Sisters, etc. These are all films that 80's horror fans grew up watching either through USA's Up All Night, though Cinemax or Showtime, through their love of either Linnea Quigley or Brinke Stevens, or through looking through the seemingly endless shelves at the good old video stores of yesteryear. Royce Mathew was involved in every single one of these films functioning, as he put it himself, either through "custodial work and production assisting - to (in no order) writing, editing, costumes, props, art direction, construction, directing, producing, sound, special effects and publicity". We took a moment to pick apart Royce's brain on working on all these legendary B movies and then got a bit serious to let him discuss an ongoing legal...

So with the Christmas season upon us, what should you get for the horror fan on your shopping list? Well, don't worry, I am here to provide you with a list of ten titles that would make a worthy addition to any collection.
Christmas Evil I picked because it is a lesser known seasonal favorite of mine. Just Before Dawn, because it is the source material for Wrong Turn. So in essence Wrong Turn is an unofficial remake of Just Before Dawn. The Slumber Party Massacre Collection, because it is a nostalgic relic of the past well worth remembering.
