A Christmas Carol Review

9 November 2009 12:59 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story “A Christmas Carol” gets the 3D treatment, and the result is a visually stunning big-screen experience I’m sure many cinema goers out there will enjoy to the fullest extent. As far as I’m concerned, my feelings about this one are mixed.

The story doesn’t really require a lengthy introduction. The holiday season is in full swing, and Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) despises Christmas and everyone celebrating it. Then he’s visited by three ghosts who take him on an emotional journey, and before you know it, his meanness is gone for good…read more [ScreeningLog]

It’s hard to believe that Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol 166 years ago, but here we are in 2009 and Robert Zemeckis has spent $180 million to produce a motion-capture animated film that retells the famous story. The movie opens this weekend on more than 2,000 digital 3D screens and »

Disney’s A Christmas Carol – in 3D

6 November 2009 3:44 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Disney’s A Christmas Carol

Directed by: Robert Zemeckis

Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn, Bob Hoskins

Running Time: 1 hr. 36 mins

Rating: PG

Release Date: November 6, 2009

Plot: Charles Dickens’ classic tale getting another version, this time in 3D. Scrooge (Carrey) is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve in the hopes that the old man can change his nasty ways.

Who’S It For? First and foremost, this is for people who love the story that’s been told many times. For the most part, it stays true to form. Those loving the third dimension will be pleased as well. Parents on the other hand will begin to worry right away when Scrooge removes some coins from a dead man’s eyes.

Expectations: I’ve seen almost every version of this tale and lean toward A Muppet Christmas Carol as my personal fave. Jim Carrey has »

How Does Jim Carrey Playing Multiple Roles in 'A Christmas Carol' Benefit the Film?

26 October 2009 1:22 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The idea of one actor playing multiple characters in a film isn't a new one even though many people begin and end the conversation with Eddie Murphy for his performances in films such as Nutty Professor and Norbit all while forgetting the comedy he brought us in Coming to America.

Before Murphy we had the likes of Mel Brooks in History of the World and Spaceballs, Alec Guiness in the fantastic Kind Hearts and Coronets and Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove. Outside of Murphy it seems only Mike Myers has endured the same kind of ill treatment, primarily for taking the joke to the point it wasn't funny any longer (debatable) in the Austin Powers films and then dropping the bomb that was The Love Guru.

Looking at the performances listed above I am reminded of some classic films as well as a couple that missed the mark, but we »

Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox Get Some Passion Play In

7 October 2009 8:07 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

ProductionWeekly's Twitter page revealed that Passion Play starts production this month.

Mitch Glazer's period drama Passion Play starring Mickey Rourke & Megan Fox will shoot in New Mexico from Oct. thru Dec.

Passion Play is the directorial debut for screenwriter Glazer (Scrooged), who also wrote the script. It follows an unusual romance between a down-on-his-luck trumpet player (Rourke) and a caged circus freak (Fox), which forms when Rourke saves Fox from a ruthless mobster. Fox described the project and her character to MTV last month.

I'm doing a movie called Passion Play with Mickey Rourke. There is a love story there, it's clearly not going to be a typical one. My character is basically a circus freak, she lives in a cage 'cause she has wings. She's not an angel, but she has these giant wings that grow out of her back. She's a freak and so she's on display basically with the circus. »

Blu-Ray Review: Phony ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’ Deserves to Be Dumped

21 September 2009 7:59 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Here’s a perfect example of Hollywood filmmaking at its laziest. It’s difficult to imagine anyone in front of the camera or behind it breaking much of a sweat in their half-hearted attempt to satisfy a mainstream audience equipped with the lowest possible expectations. It’s doubly difficult to imagine a time when star Matthew McConaughey didn’t just act with his abs. His last film was named “Surfer, Dude,” and this one could easily be called “Cheater, Douche.”

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0 Alas, his latest vehicle has the ungainly title “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” which alone would scare off most serious cinephiles. It’s the latest rip-off (sorry, “retread”) of Charles Dickens’ holiday perennial “A Christmas Carol,” and it’s the worst to hit Blu-Ray since “Scrooged.” There’s nothing redeemable about this film’s protagonist, or the film itself.

McConaughey lends his predictable brand of seductive sleaze to the role of Connor Mead, »

Megan Fox As A Circus Freak With Mickey Rourke In 'Passion Play'

8 September 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Hard to picture, right? The lovely Megan Fox, star of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and the upcoming "Jennifer's Body," caged up as a circus freak? Makeup can do a lot, sure, but is anyone going to want to buy Fox as anything less than a beautiful angel?

Probably not. It's a good thing then that she'll pretty much be one in writer/director Mitch Glazer's "Passion Play," In last week's "Behind the Screen" interview, Fox revealed to MTV's Josh Horowitz that she'll star opposite Mickey Rourke as a caged circus freak with angel-like wings growing out of her back, a role for which she had previously been rumored. Rourke will play her savior, in what the actress says "is clearly not going to be a typical [love story]."

I hadn't heard a peep about this project before today, but I'm keyed in now thanks largely to Glazer's involvement. "Passion Play" will be his directorial debut, »

First Footage From Disney's 'A Christmas Carol'

18 May 2009 5:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

A photo and the first footage (which you can see below) from Robert Zemeckis's Disney-produced motion capture version of A Christmas Carol has arrived online with the video coming in by way of Trailer Addict. Zemeckis was also at the helm of 2004's The Polar Express which used the same technology to attempt to breathe life into another Christmas story. I say attempted because the characters in that film never quite made it as cartoons or real people (at least for me), falling into a creepy sort of Twilight Zone between the two. This new film seems to pull it off more convincingly thanks to more cartoony characters and several years of advancement with the technology. That's Jim Carrey playing Scrooge and he'll also be portraying the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. The cast will also include Gary Oldman, Bob Hoskins, and Colin Firth.

'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past'

2 May 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Matthew McConaughey doesn’t need to do much to charm the average movie-going audience. He flashes a lop-sided smile, winks a sparkling eye, makes sure that his tan is deep and crispy and let’s his charming Southern drawl do most of the work. That considerable charm has gotten him through many a half-baked romantic comedy—movies like Fool’s Gold and Failure to Launch.  But in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, McConaughey is faced with a new dilemma—is his attractive exterior enough to keep audiences hooked in to a truly unlikable character?

Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past is the story of Connor Mead, a high profile photographer best known for his artful, but degrading shots of mostly naked women. Connor is the sort of professional player that thinks nothing of breaking up with three women by conference call, all while seducing a barely legal pop star in real time. »

Megan Fox And Mickey Rourke Put On A Passion Play -- Possibly the only time you would want to trade places with Mickey Rourke

Written by Nicole Pedersen As if watching Megan Fox play Mother Teresa wasn’t hot, I mean uplifting, enough – the actress will soon be seen bathed in the celestial rays of heaven itself… and this time it’s no joke! Fox has signed to play an angel opposite Mickey Rourke in the indie film “Passion Plays”. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Passion Plays” centers on a down and out trumpet player (Rourke) in 1950s Los Angeles who gets a shot at redemption after he comes to the aid of a young woman (Fox) who just so happens to be an angel. Note: a shot of redemption is totally in the bag if you save a being of divine light. “Passion Plays” was written by Mitch Glazer, the man who brought us the Bill Murray classic “Scrooged”. Glazer will also be behind the camera on the “dramatic but heartwarming” new indie feature. »
