Yentl. The publication of My Name Is Barbra, Barbra Streisand's 970-page memoir, has offered fans of the actress-singer-icon a long-awaited glimpse into her life. It’s a lot of book, a maximalist feast of details and anecdotes that paints a lavish portrait of the woman who became a generational star. It’s easy to forget just how much of Streisand's career was besieged by misogyny, whether it was critics' repeated derision of appearance or co-stars like Walter Matthau berating her on set. Streisand certainly never forgot, and her memoir offers frequent reminders of the sexism that hampered her path to success at every turn. Her memoir conveys an achingly detailed portrait of endurance by a wildly ambitious woman. Wherever she went, she was derided for trying to do or be “too much,” and she took pleasure in proving her detractors wrong in her inimitable style. When she chose to get behind the camera and direct,...

“He is in a lot of ways an Everyman, but he’s an unlikely one, and that’s how I see myself, too,” shares Eli Gelb about his character Grover in the new Broadway play “Stereophonic” by David Adjmi. The drama unfolds in a recording studio in the 1970s and the actor plays the sound engineer who has to help a band on the cusp of superstardom record their next album. The actor thinks that each of the seven characters in the play are “complex,” and of his in particular, he explains, “For as loveable as Grover is, he also isn’t perfect. It’s the 1970s, he’s a straight man, he’s pretty misogynistic when you meet him, and I think that’s important to acknowledge,” though he does prove to have “a good heart.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“When you wear these boots, you’ve got to strut,” quips Tom Pecinka about the costumes he dons to transform into 1970s rock star Peter in the new Broadway play “Stereophonic.” Though he has never been an actor who “ascribes to this idea that once you put on the shoes, you’ll be fine,” the clothes really did help him step into a “power position” in the play. It also helped address “one of the biggest insecurities” he had when he took the role Off-Broadway, which he describes as having to answer questions such as, “How does this guy move? How does this guy enter a room? How does this guy leave a room? How does he take up space, because he’s a big character?” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Cindy Morgan, the actor best known for playing Lacey Underall in “Caddyshack” and Lora/Yori in Disney’s original “Tron” film, has died. She was 69.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office in Florida confirmed the news to the Los Angeles Times, saying Morgan died of natural causes. Officials were not able to specify when she died.
Morgan gained notoriety for her performance as blonde bombshell Lacey in the 1980 sports comedy “Caddyshack,” starring Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield.
“‘Caddyshack’ was my first film and I’ll say that the end product was so completely different, it was originally about the caddies,” Morgan said in a 2012 interview. “So at first, I had nothing to lose to audition. It was fun. All I did was focus on making the person sweat. Look ’em in the eye, do that thing many women know how to do.”

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

French pay-tv giant Canal+ went on the offensive at a special event in Paris on Wednesday, promoting its historic role as the biggest supporter of local and international cinema in France and laying out its past track record and future plans.
The roadshow-style conference was part of an operation laying the ground for the launch of a new high-end, cinema-focused channel Canal+ Box Office which was teased at the end of the event.
“2023 will be the most beautiful year for cinema in the history of Canal+. We’ve never held an event like this before devoted only to cinema, but we felt the need to talk about this,” declared Canal+ Group Chairman and CEO Maxime Saada.
The exec said the banner year was due to three factors, topped by the agreement it signed with the French cinema guilds in early 2022, pledging to invest at least €200M (213M) annually in cinema over five years.

To the degree that a global sales division can shape its own image, Pathé’s international arm has built and bolstered its current brand around strong IP, recognizable faces and unbelievable but true stories.
To see those elements in play, one need only look to last year, when projects including Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta” and Martin Bourboulon’s “Eiffel” lifted from world and film history as they showcased stars such as Virginie Efira, Romain Duris and Emma Mackey, while collectively finding homes in more than a hundred international territories.
To witness those same imperatives, but supercharged, one need only glimpse Pathé’s 2022 slate, which goes long on hometown IP and star power.
“Being exhibitors ourselves, we make films for the big screen,” says Marie-Laure Montironi, exec VP of international sales. “Today, names and universal stories drive audiences to cinemas. To hook people, you need a big spectacle, a big story,...

Pathé, a driving force behind France’s biggest movies slated for 2022 including “Asterix & Obelix, the Middle Kingdom” and “The Three Musketeers,” is developing an untitled two-part film about Charles de Gaulle, the legendary French army officer who led the French resistance against Nazi Germany during World War II and eventually became president of France.
The film will be directed by Antonin Baudry, who made his feature debut with “The Wolf’s Call,” toplining “Lupin” star Omar Sy. "Just – do your part, and I'll do mine..." Scream Factory has revealed an official trailer for an indie home invasion horror-thriller titled Masquerade, the latest from filmmaker Shane Dax Taylor. This seems like it should be going direct-to-dvd as there are just too many of these dull, derivative horror films these days. Masquerade follows 11-year-old Casey, who must survive the night after a group of intruders, led by Rose, break into her family's home to steal their priceless artwork. The stakes are high as the crew will stop at nothing to get what they want until a shocking twist ending. The cast features Alyvia Lind as Casey, Bella Thorne as Rose, plus Skyler Samuels, Mircea Monroe, Joana Metrass, Michael Proctor, & Austin Nichols. There's nothing to really say about this except that it looks especially unoriginal and very boring. Here's the official trailer for Shane Dax Taylor's Masquerade, direct from Scream...

A dispute over a “Masked Singer” adaptation between Fremantle, Ukrainian broadcaster Ukraine and its local competitor 1+1 Media has finally been resolved.
Conflict arose after 1+1 broadcast “Maskarad” (“Masquerade”) in October, leading Ukraine to accuse its rival of pirating “The Masked Singer,” format, for which it had purchased adaptation rights from Fremantle. The global hit format is owned by Korean producer Mbc and licensed to Ukraine by Fremantle.
1+1 countered that “Maskarad” was in fact an adaptation of Romanian Antena TV Group’s “Mysteries in the Spotlight,” another costumed competition show featuring celebrities. Unable to agree, the parties sought recourse with Frapa (Format Recognition and Protection Association), the association dedicated to the protection of formats.
In December, Frapa found that “Maskarad” and “The Masked Singer” were 73% similar. According to Frapa guidelines, the similarities need to reach 80% before it is considered a copy.

Ten years ago today, the iconic "Masquerade" episode of Vampire Diaries aired. It was without a doubt one of the defining episodes of the season, perhaps even the series as a whole. As fans will recall, "Masquerade" showed Tyler (Michael Trevino) triggering the werewolf curse, Katherine (Nina Dobrev) being trapped in the tomb and Elena breaking up with Stefan (Paul Wesley) for the first—but not the last—time. It set the stage for the seasons to come and, more importantly, cemented fan hatred for Katherine. But the introduction of Katherine's tomb, werewolves and Stefan and Elena's on-again, off-again relationship only created...

I’d never heard of this gem of a British production; now it goes on my list of highly recommended titles. A dock area on the Thames is ‘the pool,’ and the sailors that disembark from the cargo ships are susceptible to the temptations of black market trade. A single eventful weekend traces the fates of a half-dozen young people, the women that like the sailors, and the sailor that gets mixed up in a deadly serious crime. Director Basil Dearden’s excellent cast is mostly unfamiliar to us Yanks, but we get really tied up in their problems. This picture should be much better known. It’s the first English movie to depict an interracial romance, and it does so without sensationalism or special pleading. The best new extra is an interview with actor Earl Cameron, who at 103 years of age has his act (and his memories) totally together.

Pong Su (Photo credit: ABC).
The infamous case of the North Korean cargo ship involved in Australia’s largest drug bust will be dramatised in a feature film, potentially as the first official Australian-Korean co-production.
Reg Cribb is writing the first draft of action drama The Pong Su for the producers, Unicorn Films’ Lizzette Atkins and Jonathan Kim of Korea’s Hanmac Culture Group.
The cargo ship was used to smuggle 150 kilograms of heroin into Victoria in April 2003. The Australian Federal Police monitored the operation and the ship was seized off the coast of Nsw on the orders of Prime Minister John Howard.
The film will follow eccentric defence lawyer Ian Hayden, his Korean interpreter Yuna and their relationship with their charismatic client, the ship’s master, North Korean Captain Song.
“In a story full of contradictions and moral ambiguity, the defence team is determined to see justice done,” Atkins says.

Prolific, two-time Oscar-winning, screenwriter William Goldman has passed away at age of 87.
William Goldman, one of the film industry’s most consistently successful screenwriters, has passed away this morning at his Manhattan home, having succumbed to complications from colon cancer and pneumonia at the age of 87, as confirmed to The Washington Post by his daughter, Jenny. He leaves behind an array of work that, frankly, is too vast to respectfully summarize in one sentence.
Goldman – the Chicago-born screenwriter who helped launch the career of Robert Redford by writing bellwether buddy movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and would one day write generational film favorite The Princess Bride – started his life as a scribe unsuccessfully in the late-1950s as a novelist, publishing works such as The Temple of Gold, Your Turn to Curtsy, My Turn to Bow and Soldier in the Rain, before ultimately finding his voice in screenwriting,...

The outlook for South Korea’s film box office business is decidedly guarded. Over Chuseok holiday period, overall sales increased but business ended up being a zero-sum game.
According to the Korean Film Council’s report, box office managed to sell almost 32% more tickets in September, compared to the same month a year ago. That’s partly because of the holiday, which fell in October in 2017.
Kofic’s box office tracking service Kobis showed that the number of admissions in local theaters was up about 4 million to 16.81 million in September, with revenues up by 42% to $127 million. The number of admissions for homegrown titles grew by 5.78 million to 11.76 million, with revenues increased by 113.6% to $88.23 million.
Big homegrown films release during the holiday week in all likelihood contributed to the hike. Over the past few years, the Chuseok holiday season has grown to one of the peak seasons for the South Korean box office,...

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Jay Lerner, one of the most crucial figures in the American songbook. The lyricist, librettist, and screenwriter was born in New York City. That's where he first made his mark, too, on Broadway with his first big hit Brigadoon in 1947. Soon he went Hollywood, working on original movie musicals as well as transfers of his famous work from the stage, and garnering 7 Oscar nominations and 3 wins. His career ended with The Little Prince (1974) but at the time of his death in 1986 he was working on a musical adaptation of My Man Godfrey and had started work on Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, though his only efforts are in the song "Masquerade" (uncredited).

We take John Barry’s non-Bond retrospective into the 80s, with some of his epic scores of love, lust and loss…
John Barry’s love affair with cinema is well documented. One could not imagine such a torrent of melodic invention pouring forth with such vibrant intensity if he was not enraptured by the cinematic experience: the darkened periphery of the auditoria; the hushed reverence of another world; the minutiae of human emotion playing out on the big screen. Everything he did, from The Beat to Enigma, represented a direct and synchronous passion for lyrical expression alongside the visual language of film.
The young Prendergast got his love of film from his father, Jack Xavier, who was a cinema projectionist in the silent movie era and would subsequently own a chain of cinemas in the North East. One of Barry’s earliest memories was being carried on his dad’s...

In his forthcoming memoir, "Stories I Only Tell My Friends," Rob Lowe dishes on the early days of the "Brat Pack" (he used to hate the term, coined by a "scumbag" journalist), his friendship with Charlie Sheen (who used to wear a bulletproof vest under his clothes to school), and his many lovers (Demi Moore, Natassja Kinski, Princess Stephanie, Melissa Gilbert, and Fawn Hall, of Iran-Contra infamy).
Breezy and light, the book is a fun read, and Lowe drops enough names and reveals enough personal stories to keep you turning its pages. It's easy to imagine the young kid from Ohio landing in Malibu and pinching himself as his life is transformed -- at one point during his Teen Beat phase, young female fans used to sneak into his bedroom, waking up his parents -- though he has a big enough ego that he can't help putting himself at the center of major news events,...

Photograph by Annie Leibovitz.New York, N.Y.—“We competed to see who could play harder, then show up for work and still kick ass,” Rob Lowe tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Vanessa Grigoriadis about filming Masquerade in the Hamptons in 1987 while his then buddy, Charlie Sheen, was filming Wall Street. “The verdict: Charlie by a nose.” Lowe tells Grigoriadis that his friends growing up in Malibu pre-fame were the “uncool” guys who didn’t surf: Chris Penn and Charlie Sheen. “The cool girls in Malibu had no time for me,” Lowe says. “I wasn’t a beach volleyball player, a surfer, or a quasi-burnout.” However, as Lowe recounts in a Vanity Fair excerpt from his upcoming autobiography, it would be a mere five years after plotting their acting careers in the Sheens’ pool that the actor and his friends would be shot to fame.

When I was a kid, I had a gi-normous crush on Kim Cattrall. She was Gracie Law in Big Trouble in Little China, a classic if there ever was one (if they remake this, I swear, I’ll take a hostage). A few years later she was the first woman I ever saw with washboard abs when she appeared in Masquerade. She stripped down in that one and, next thing you know, I had big trouble in My little China. Oh, throw in Mannequin, as well. Now, of course, she has been stolen by a generation of cosmo-swilling, insufferable Sex and the City fans as Amanda. In that role she helped to solidify the term “cougar” in our vernacular, the word being so much more digestible than “pathetic old whore.” Ouch, you say? Well, first, I’m talking about the character, not Cattrall. Second, let’s make one thing perfectly clear: Obviously,...
