Hellbound Hearts (Book Review)

It’s hard to believe that Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart was published more than 20 years ago. The novella first appeared in 1986’s Night Visions collection, and was reissued later on as a standalone book. If you haven’t read The Hellbound Heart or seen Hellraiser, the Barker-scripted-and-directed movie it inspired, then you probably shouldn’t be reading Pocket Books’ recently published Hellbound Hearts.
Edited by Paul Kane and Marie O’Regan, this anthology includes 21 tales inspired by Barker’s hellraising universe. So if you don’t know what a Cenobite is, have never heard of the Lemarchand Configuration and think Pinhead is one of the actors in Tod Browning’s Freaks, you should check out the source material and film before opening up this tome. However, if you’re familiar with and a fan of Barker’s work, then let’s open up this Box, I mean book,

She arrives at Grandma’s house, only to find her beloved Nan in the belly of the beast, literally...
What happens after Red Riding Hood’s unfortunate discovery of a Wolf in Grandma’s clothing is not definitive: in various versions of the fairy tale she either escapes unscathed; or she’s eaten by the Wolf; or she’s cut out of the Wolf’s stomach by the helpful Woodsman.

Vampire thriller Dead Cert casts up

British producer Jonathan Sothcott get in touch to let us know that a cast has been nailed down for Dead Cert, the vampire film he previously discussed with us here. Set to roll for five weeks this fall in London and Essex, the movie will be directed by Steven Lawson from a script he wrote with Ben Shillito and Nick Onsloe.
The ensemble is headed by UK horror regular Craig Fairbrass, Doghouse’s Billy Murray, Steven Berkoff, Dog Soldiers and Mutant Chronicles’ Sean Pertwee, Philip Davis, Andy Tiernan, Lisa McAllister, Roland Manookian and Janet Montgomery, the latter of whom will be seen this fall in both The Hills Run Red and Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead. “Janet is a bona fide scream queen,” Sothcott tells Fango. “Craig Fairbrass and I went with her to the Hills Run Red premiere last week, and she is bloody amazing. This Tuesday, August 18, Lakeshore Records releases the CD soundtrack to Sam Raimi’s terrific summer chiller Drag Me To Hell in stores and for on-line purchase, featuring his frequent collaborator Christopher Young’s full score. The disc contains 14 tracks comprising almost an hour of music from Raimi’s saga of a nasty gypsy curse.
Young is no stranger to the genre, having composing acclaimed music for films like Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II, The Fly II, The Dark Half, Tales From The Hood, Species, Urban Legend, Bless The Child, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and, most recently, The Uninvited. His previous collaborations with Raimi include The Gift, the first two Grudge features and Spider-man 3. The Drag soundtrack is currently available digitally via Amazon and iTunes. I’ve always said that the best new music being released now-a-days is coming from the video game composers. In the virtual world of video games, the new generation of techno-composers has been putting out some of the most amazing music I’ve heard that not only utilizes full symphonic orchestration, but also incorporates the use of electronic elements -together taking the art of suspenseful composition to a whole new level.
Two perfect examples of this new generation of musical masterminds are Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan, the composers of the Prototype Original Soundtrack.
The Prototype Video Game is set in New York City (home to the East Coast Fangoria Offices) as a virus infects people and the military attempts to put an end to it. Wrong Turn 3 director Declan O’Brien will be previewing his new Fox DVD splatter sequel at the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held June 5-7 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets) in New York City. O’Brien (pictured below with friend), the director of the Sci Fi Channel original movies Rock Monster, Monster Ark and Cyclops, will debut exclusive clips from Wrong Turn 3 (about another group of lost travelers facing off against inbred hillbilly maniacs) at the convention on Sunday.
In addition to his directing chores, O’Brien has also scripted Harpies, The Snake King and Savage Planet for Sci Fi. Stop by this site again over the next couple of days as we begin posting the full schedules (auditorium panels and film programs) for the Fango show.

30 Days Of Night actor Ben Foster (pictured below), star of the upcoming sci-fi thriller Pandorum, has joined the lineup of the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held June 5-7, 2009 at the Jacob K. Monster metalheads Gwar will be invading the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, to be held June 5-7, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets) in New York City. Bandmates Sleazy P. Martini, Slave, Jizmak Da Gusha and Oderus Urungus will be on hand all three days (at their “human skin” booth), and host a panel on Sunday in their human guises (Don Drakulich, Matt Maguire, Brad Roberts and Dave Brockie).

Friday The 13th’s Mrs. Voorhees, actress Betsy Palmer, and her “son,” Jason actor Kane Hodder from the series’ seventh through 10th installments, have joined the lineup of the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors. Hellboy movies director Guillermo del Toro has joined the lineup of the fast-approaching East Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors. The event will be held June 5-7, 2009 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center (11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets) in New York City. One of the most celebrated genre directors of our time, del Toro will be appearing at the convention on Friday (5 to 7 p.m. only) for an exclusive stage appearance and to sign copies of his first novel, the vampire epic The Strain: Book One Of The Strain (coming June 2 from William Morrow), with co-author Chuck Hogan.

Prong mainman Tommy Victor, who was recently interviewed by Fangoria (read it here) will be appearing at Fangoria's Weekend Of Horrors in Los Angeles, April 17-19, 2009. Victor, who recently toured with both Ministry and Danzig, will see the release of Prong's Power Of The Damn Mixxxer (read our review) on May 12th, 2009 via 13th Planet Records.
Tommy will be appearing at the Schecter Guitar Research booth for signing sessions throughout the weekend, along with Skumlove, who's new album The Church Of The New Perversion was recently recorded and co-written with Victor.
