Full of the strange

5 December 2009 4:09 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

In September Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland. He faces extradition to the Us, having fled the States in 1978 to avoid being sentenced for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. The debate about the case has raged ever since. Martin Amis was the first writer to interview Polanski after his flight, meeting him in Paris in 1979 for a magazine article. Here, we publish the encounter in full

When I was being driven to the police station from the hotel, the car radio was already talking about it. The newsmen were calling the police before I was arrested to see whether they can break the news. I couldn't believe… I thought, you know, I was going to wake up from it. I realise, if I have killed somebody, it wouldn't have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… fucking, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to fuck young girls. »

Polanski Watch – Further Updates

24 October 2009 9:32 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Roman Polanski may at last be facing his Chinatown moment as the Us authorities move ever close to extraditing him to face sentencing in connection with his 1978 conviction for unlawful sex with a minor.

Matters were complicated for the Director on Tuesday when Switzerland’s highest court formally rejected Polanski’s appeal to be released on bail. Judging that he posed a high flight risk, prosecutors ruled that The Ghost director must remain in Swiss custody “during the entire extradition proceedings.” Explaining their decision to back an earlier government ruling that Polanski would be highly likely to flout any bail conditions, Swiss authorities told the press that “The court considered the risk that Roman Polanski might flee if released from custody as high.”

Although Polanski must now await the result of a Us application to have him extradited, his lawyer, Herve Temime told the media that a further appeal would »

Angelina Jolie To Replace Charlize Theron In ‘The Tourist?’

12 October 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

A couple of months ago we got wind of the news that Terminator Salvation and Avatar star, Sam Worthington, was going to be replacing Tom Cruise in the spy thriller, The Tourist. That’s the male lead sorted out, but what about the female lead? Well, up until this point it was Charlize Theron who was set to play the role, but today we learn - by way of THR’s Risky Biz Blog - that she’s officially stepped away from the project, and word is that Brad Pitt’s even prettier half, a.k.a. Angelina Jolie, is in talks to step in and take her place.

A remake of the 2005 French-language thriller, “Anthony Zimmer“, The Tourist centers on “an American tourist who, on behalf of Interpol, goes undercover to entrap a former lover who’s a suspected global criminal.” If Jolie actually signs on for the role, »

Polanski – Genius, Gifted, Tragic And Controversial

28 September 2009 12:18 PM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

I remember my first day of screenwriting class. After sitting down and introducing myself I was given a copy of the script for Chinatown. I was told that this was the most perfect script ever written. I remember my teacher referring to it as the holy grail of scripts. I had seen the film before but I’d never noticed how perfect the writing actually was until I watched it again with the script in hand.

Roman Polanski did uncredited work on the Chinatown script before directing it. It remains his masterpiece, which is saying a lot when you consider the man also wrote and directed Rosemary’s Baby some years before. Not to mention directing The Pianist back in 2002.

Yes, Roman Polanski is responsible for giving cinema some of the greatest moments it has ever or will ever see. There is no doubting that he is a huge talent »

Polanski Watch – Day One

28 September 2009 7:14 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

The arrest of the director Roman Polanksi on Sunday (read FilmShaft’s original report on the incident Here), has stoked the ire of the entertainment establishment, with French culture minister Frederic Mitterand joining the clamour of stars and industry insiders, Monica Belluci and Harvey Weinstein amongst them, who see the filmmaker’s surprise arrest on 32 year old child sex charges as an affront to common sense.

The extraordinary row has put the French minister on a war footing with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, who intend to make good on the arrest warrant originally issued in 1978 subject to successful extradition to the Us from Switzerland, where Polanksi has been in custody since Sunday morning.

Polanksi, now 76, who has a home in Switzerland and has visited the country many times over a period of 15 years, had assumed he’d be safe as he attended the Zurich Film Festival to accept a lifetime achievement award. »

You might not know (or forgot), but Polish-French director Roman Polanski has been working on a new film titled The Ghost since last year. We wrote about it a few times while it was casting, but that's about it. This teaser appeared recently on the official website for The Ghost (that I didn't even know existed until now) found at: theghost-romanpolanski.com. Polanski Lands Lifetime Honour

4 August 2009 12:16 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Controversial filmmaker Roman Polanski is to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival in September.

Organisers will present the Polish-born director with the Golden Eye for his contributions to film at the 27 September ceremony.

He will also take part in a workshop discussing his work, prior to a retrospective of his films during the festival's annual A Tribute to... series.

Polanski's featured works will include his cinematic debut, 1962's Knife in the Water, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, Frantic, Death & the Maiden and his 2003 hit The Pianist.

Just last year, controversy surrounding the director led discussion at the festival when organisers screened Marina Zenovich's documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired - about the moviemaker's refusal to return to the U.S. since he fled in 1977 after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

The A Tribute to... series has previously honoured filmmakers including Oliver Stone and Stephen Frears. »

Eiff 09: Review of Dario Argento's Giallo

1 July 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Year: 2009

Directors: Dario Argento

Writers: Jim Agnew & Sean Keller

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: projectcyclops

Rating: 8 out of 10

Giallo means ‘yellow’, in Italian, and often refers to the yellow colored covers of cheap, paperback thrillers from the 30’s and 40’s, as well as pulp movies from Italian directors made during the 70’s and 80’s. Argento’s latest offering, since the disappointing Mother of Tears, is something of a pastiche of pulp detective stories, as well as a satirical take on modern ‘horror-porn’ films. Adrien Brody (The Jacket, King Kong, etc) stars as the classic, Chandler-esque, hard-nosed detective, skulking in his underground office; he’s charged with solving the very worst and most grisly cases in the city. After the disappearance of a young female model, he teams up with her anxious sister, and together they set about solving the case. While I’m not the most ardent Argento fan, »

The Court of Public Opinion -- Dellamorte reviews Roman Polanski Wanted and Desired on DVD

2 February 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Roman Polanski has directed at least four out and out masterpieces: Rosemary’s Baby, Knife in the Water, Chinatown and The Pianist. To say nothing of Bitter Moon, Cul-de-sac, Repulsion, MacBeth, and The Tenant. Or even the solid but unspectacular films like Death and the Madien or Frantic. But as the old joke goes, you sodomize one drugged up thirteen-year-old, and that how people think of you. That may sound flippant, but in the court of public opinion that is all Polanski is. A dirty European who fled from justice and has lived abroad in sin ever since. There is no defending what Polanski did, but if you watch the engrossing documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, you will hear some sideways defenses. One person suggest that as Roman is from a European culture, and that sleeping with an underage girl is not all that unusual »
