Quotes

  • [Jake enters the ship's gym, looking around]

Brody : -Crew members are required to work out to maintain muscle tone.

    Jake : -I'm not a crew member.

Brody : -But what about your body?

    Jake : -What about it?

Brody : -Aren't you worried about letting it go?

Jake : -I'm a nice guy, I let it go wherever it wants to. Besides, I only need it to carry my brains around.

  • Jake : What is this? Good Ship Kindergarten?

  • Jake : [sticks fingers into a horrible looking porridge-like food]  Even for a last meal, this is lousy.

  • Jake : [last lines]

Jake : You know, Captain? I think we 'otta go check this place out.

  • Jake : This is a shower?

Dr. Sally Arthur : Ultrasound. Stand in the center, keep your mouth closed if you have any dental work.

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally presses a button on the control panel and the shower door shuts Jakes in. A loud thrumming sound is heard and the center section Jake is standing on begins to spin slowly]

Jake : [shouting]  Not bad! How do I scrub my back?

Dr. Sally Arthur : I'll do it for you!

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally presses a button on the control panel and we see pressure on Jake's back section]

  • Jake : [the stranger fires his weapon, freezing Huxley mid-step, and throws a can at Huxley. We see a blue flash, and hear a melting sound. The stranger again fires his weapon unfreezing Huxley]

Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan, hands raised quickly steps in Huxley's peripheral vision]  Huxley, don't move!

    Jake : [Huxley stops]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Now, back up the way you came.

Huxley Welles : [Huxley backs up, only taking his eyes off the stranger for a moment to ask]  Jonathan, what's going on?

Capt Jonathan Hays : [camera flashes to the melting can]  There was a disentegrating field right in front of you.

Jake : [the stranger has moved down the stairs and now approaches the men, slowly]

Huxley Welles : Watch it, Jonathan.

Jake : [the stranger stops in front of Jonathan. Slowly, he reaches out and hands Jonathan the weapon]  .

Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan takes the weapon and stares into the strangers eyes]  .

Jake : [the camera pans back to the stranger. He bears a striking resemblence to a much older and very filthy, Captain Jacob Dryden Brown]  .

  • Jake , Capt Jonathan Hays , Huxley Welles : [All three men step onto the bridge]

Priscilla : Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!

Capt Jonathan Hays : Intruder cleared for entry, no further action.

Jake : [the stranger walks towards the main viewscreen]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Priscilla, scan for ID please.

Priscilla : [a 2-D sketch of a humanoid appears on the screen]  Captain Jacob Dryden Brown, class of 2074. Graduated third in class.

Jake : I got a C in weightlessness training, brought down my grade point average.

Priscilla : [Continues analysis]  Assigned as Captain of the Vanguard Explorer in the year 2080. Ship vanished in 2082. All aboard, declared dead.

    Jake : Surprise.

Dr. Sally Arthur : Captain Brown! Did anyone else from the Vanguard Explorer survive?

    Jake : [Jake approaches Sally]

Dr. Sally Arthur : My brother was on your ship. Lieutenant Vance Arthur?

    Jake : Sorry.

Capt Jonathan Hays : What happened to your ship?

    Jake : It was destroyed.

Dr. Sally Arthur : And how did you escape?

    Jake : In a capsule.

Huxley Welles : So much for the captain going down with his ship.

Jake : If it's all the same to you, I'd like to speak with your commanding officer.

Capt Jonathan Hays : I'm the commanding officer.

Jake : How long before we get back to Earth?

Capt Jonathan Hays : 26 years. We're on a exploratory mission to Berinsten's Star.

Jake : Just my luck. I finally catch a ride and it's going the wrong direction.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : It's a lot better than where you were.

  • Jake : [Jake stares at the monitor display, seeing the suns move closer and closer to apogee]

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally, also looking at the monitor display, moves to stand next to Jake]

Jake : [Jake looks to his left and notices Sally standing behind him]  If we get out of this, I'll spring you a dinner.

Dr. Sally Arthur : [shakes her head]  If we get out of this, my treat!

  • Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [after the OTZ Assembly is destroyed, Beanie looks to Huxley]

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : And you said the rail gun wouldn't work!

Capt Jonathan Hays : Ha Ha Ha! That's right!

Capt Jonathan Hays : [clicks the intercom button on his command chair console]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Come on up Jake, I think Huxley may want to apologize!

Jake : [no response from Jake]

Huxley Welles : Well, it looks like some people are too well mannered to gloat!

Capt Jonathan Hays : Heh Heh! You hear that Jake?"

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally comes to sit next to Jonathan on the arm of the command chair]  .

Jake : [still no response from Jake]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Jake? Jake! Take over, Hux!

Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan shouts his order to Huxley as he jumps out of the command chair and runs after Sally to see what happened to Jake]  .

  • Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan runs into the airlock and sees Jake unconscious on the floor. Sally is holding Jake's head in her arms trying to bring him around by slapping his face]

Dr. Sally Arthur : Jake, can you hear me? Wake up!

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally slaps Jake's face again, and looks to Jonathan]

Dr. Sally Arthur : I'm afraid he's gonna slip into a coma. Come On Jake!

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally slaps Jake's face again]

Dr. Sally Arthur : Come on!

Jake : [Jake's eyes don't open, but we see Sally was successful in bringing Jake around as he responds]

    Jake : Quit hittin' me.

Dr. Sally Arthur : Do you know your name? Tell me your name, please?

    Jake : The name's Jake Brown, ma'am.

Jake : [Jake has not opened his eyes yet, and now squints one eye open to look up at Sally]

Jake : You owe me a dinner.

    Dr. Sally Arthur : Ah.

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally sighs in relief, and bends down to lovingly nuzzle Jake's face]

  • Capt Jonathan Hays : Then you've known all along, about Captain Forbes, and Lani Miyori.

Adm. Beasley : And regretted it, Jonathan. When serving the greater good, sacrifices are unfortunate, but they are inevitable and they must always, always be made. I tried to explain this to Captain Forbes. He never understood. But you do.

Capt Jonathan Hays : Admiral, I do NOT understand.

Adm. Beasley : Remember the mission Jonathan. To ensure the survival of the species. To ensure the survival of those fools back on Earth? No! We go on, to Demeter. We establish ourselves in the highest manner possible. It is our obligation.

Capt Jonathan Hays : And where does the OTZ fit into all of this?

Adm. Beasley : A small workforce will be needed to ensure the overall success of the project. We use the tools that come to hand. You've learned that as Captain, haven't you?

Capt Jonathan Hays : And now you want Earth Star Voyager to join those ships.

Adm. Beasley : Voyager has the tools, the resources, the Baumann drive, yes I need those to get to Demeter. But most importantly, I need you. All of you.

    Capt Jonathan Hays : No.

Adm. Beasley : You refuse? Perhaps I should address the rest of your crew. You think they will ALL refuse?

Jake : Why Admiral Beasley, you sound like you're planning a mutiny.

Adm. Beasley : Hm Hm Hm. Jake Brown. Forever turning up where you're not wanted."

    Jake : It's a TALENT I have.

Adm. Beasley : [looks back to Jonathan]

Adm. Beasley : Permission to address your entire crew.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [whispering, in a low voice]

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : Jonathan, get his attention.

Capt Jonathan Hays : [pauses, then looks back to the screen]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Permission granted.

  • Trigger : [Beginning Scene: A field of stars is shown, with the caption: Outer Space, 2082. The Vanguard Explorer looms into view, severely disabled from a space battle, a large hole blasted in the side. The scene shifts to the pilot, Trigger; he is pinned at the helm by circuitry and structural pylons. He catches a glimpse of Jake Brown coming to render aid]  Captain?

Jake : [sees Trigger pinned under the rubble and rushes to help him out]

Jake : Let's get you out of here Trigger.

Jake : [grunts as he struggles to lift Trigger from the rubble]

    Jake : Come on!

Jake , Trigger : [Jake and Trigger move to the escape pod launcher, Trigger has sustained a leg injury and unable to walk unassisted. Jake has his arm around Trigger's waist, helping him]

Trigger : We gonna make it out of here, Sir?

Jake : [out of breath]  You bet we are!

Jake , Trigger : [Jake and Trigger reach the escape pod landing, Jake helps Trigger into the pod]

Jake : See you planetside, partner!

[Jake pushes a button and Trigger's escape pod is launched]

Vance Arthur : [Lt. Vance Arthur approaches the pod landing with an armed escort]

Jake : [Jake turns to face Vance]

Vance Arthur : [looks over his shoulder to his soldiers]  Check forward command.

    Soldier : Yes sir.

Vance Arthur : You weren't trying to save Trigger, were you Sir? There's not an outpost close enough for him to reach.

Vance Arthur : [he steps to the platform where Jake is standing]

Vance Arthur : I want you to address the crew. Tell them I'm in command of the ship.

Jake : Sure you want her, Vance? Kinda messed her up.

Vance Arthur : [Vance draws his weapon and motions for Jake to come with him]

Jake : [Jake slowly steps down, glares as he walks past Vance, then catches Vance off guard with a round house kick, knocking Vance's weapon away and Vance down]  Yaaaaahhh!

    Vance Arthur : Uhhhhhhhhh.

Jake : [Jake rushes back up to the pod platform, quickly sets the controls and enters the pod, escaping]

Vance Arthur : [wearily comes to stand up, his attack force coming up behind him]

Vance Arthur : Rest in peace, Jacob Brown.

  • Jake : [Jake enters the bridge after getting cleaned up in the infirmary]

Priscilla : Unauthorized personnel on bridge!

Capt Jonathan Hays : Personnel cleared for entry, no further action.

Jake : [steps in front of the main viewer]

Jake : So, what would *further action* have been?

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : Security measures would have been instantaneously deployed.

Jake : That's very clever... whatever it is.

Jake : [looks at the display screen]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Uh, Priscilla.

Jake : Stupid name for a computer.

Capt Jonathan Hays : Well, Dr. Baumann named it after his daughter...

    Jake : Baumann?

Capt Jonathan Hays : Ah, right. You wouldn't have known. Dr. Joseph Baumann, he invented this...

Jake : Joesph Baumann? Chubby little guy who talks to himself?

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : That's how he works things out, by talking to himself!

Jake : You mean, they guy who was always talking about running elastic through the universe was right?

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : Elastic is only the layman's term. Technically, it...

    Capt Jonathan Hays : Careful.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : What, it's not classified.

Capt Jonathan Hays : No, but it took you three hours the last time you tried to explain it.

Jake : You mean, you understand all this?

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : Of course. I helped develop it.

Jake : Now, why didn't I figure that part out.

Priscilla : Captain Brown is notorious for misjudging people.

Capt Jonathan Hays : Ah, you two, know each other?

  • Jake : [Jake has just been asked how he knows Priscilla, he looks down and rubs his head]

Jake : Well, we, uh, we used to go out...

Priscilla : We would have, if you'd ever shown up.

Capt Jonathan Hays : So you do know her!

    Jake : Oh boy. Uh...

    Jake : [looks to Beanie]

Jake : She's not *really* in there, is she?

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : No. It's an analog of Priscilla Baumann's brain. All her thoughts, feelings, memories, but the real Priscilla Baumann is back on Earth.

    Jake : Ah.

Jake : [Jake nods in relief]

    Priscilla : Am I?

Jake : [Jake looks to the viewscreen with a puzzled look, not sure if he totally believes it's just an AI]  .

  • Capt Jonathan Hays : [after Brody's death, Jonathan sits on one of the crew lounge sofas, blankly staring out, trying to figure out what to do next]

Jake : [Jake walks up and sits on the couch adjacent to Jonathan]

Jake : Oh, here you are. You alright?

Capt Jonathan Hays : Yeah. Sure. Great. I've got two dead crewman floating out in deep space, another one in cryostasis for who knows how long, and it's sheer dumb luck we haven't lost any more.

Jake : Dumb luck's a good thing to have sometimes.

Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan, turns his back to Jake and stands, slumped against the doorway, arms crossed]

Jake : I mean, look at the mess you're in. You're an inexperienced captain, commanding an inexperienced crew, you're in over your're head, why don't you just quit?

Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan quickly turns back to face Jake, angry]

Capt Jonathan Hays : I can't do that!

    Jake : There you go.

Capt Jonathan Hays : I don't need this.

Jake : [roughly puts his hand on Jonathan's shoulder]

    Jake : Look, kid...

Jake : [notices Jonathan flinch at the word "kid". He corrects himself]

Jake : Captain. You know you're responsible for every one on board this ship.

Capt Jonathan Hays : I'm aware of that.

Jake : But self pity doesn't go along with that! Sorry, but that's just not one of the Captain's luxuries.

Capt Jonathan Hays : [sarcastically]  What kind of luxuries does the captain get?

Jake : None that I can think of.

Huxley Welles : [Huxley walks up]

Huxley Welles : Jonathan, Beanie found something in the gym you need to take a look at.

Jake : [not taking his eyes off of Jonathan]

Jake : Captain will be right there, Huxley.

Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan stares back at Jake icily]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Captain's on his way.

  • Jake : [Jake sits on the examination table being asked about his mental condition by the ship's therapist, Dr. Leland Eugene]  .

Dr. Leland Eugene : Do you have any physical impairments that could...

    Jake : [Jake interrupts]

Jake : Wait, lemmie save you some time here. Yes. No. Maybe. None of your business. You can put those answers anywhere you want.

Dr. Leland Eugene : Your profile suggests mental trauma, brought on by extended periods of isolation.

Jake : Really? Come to think of it, there is one thing.

[he motions for Dr. Eugene to come closer]

Jake : Lately, I've been getting these, weird urges, you know? Feel like throwing things around, bashin' heads together.

Dr. Leland Eugene : Is there any particular stimulus that brings on this urge?

Jake : People that ask questions.

Dr. Sally Arthur : [sees the examination is going nowhere, Sally decides to intervene, if nothing else to save the poor doctor from further embarrassment]

Dr. Sally Arthur : Dr. Eugene, ah, I'm ready here, if you can continue this later.

Dr. Leland Eugene : [he nods and exits]

Jake : Lemmie guess, you're gonna tell me he's a real nice guy once I get to know him.

Dr. Sally Arthur : No. He's always like that.

    Jake : Ah.

Dr. Sally Arthur : Take off your clothes, please.

Jake : [grins]  Ha! Does that mean I'm forgiven?

Dr. Sally Arthur : [Sally grins back, then quickly loses the smile and is all business]  Your clothes, Captain. Or I can put you in quarentine for the next few years.

  • Jake : [Jake is brought before Vance, aka "Top Dog"]

Vance Arthur : [Vance rises from his throne, a spotlight shines on his face]

Vance Arthur : I have a proposal for you.

Jake : Comin' from you, it otta' be a winner.

Vance Arthur : Pity, you could not command as well as you could talk.

Jake : What do you want?

Vance Arthur : The access codes to the Voyager.

Jake : Pretty greedy, Vance. You still never paid me for the last ship you stole.

Vance Arthur : Give me the codes, and I'll let you and your friends, *live*.

Jake : You know it's funny? But for some reason, I just don't trust ya'.

    Vance Arthur : THE CODES!

Jake : [Jake stares back up at Vance defiantly, refusing to speak]

Vance Arthur : As you wish. I'll still take the ship.

Jake : Oh you will? Come on Vance! You may be *Top Dog* of this looney carnival, but that doesn't make you any better than a second-rate theif! Come on Vance! Anyone can challenge, right?

Jake : [Jakes looks around to the other spectators and warriors, then looks back up to Vance to issue the challenge]

Jake : Or is *Top Dog*, afraid?

Vance Arthur : [cooly glares back at Jake]

Vance Arthur : I give you ten minutes to prepare. A fight to the death, Jacob Brown.

    Jake : You got it!

  • Jake : [Jake is working out in the gym with the weight gravity devices, small suction cups that can be put anywhere on the body and can be programmed to simulate any weight]

Dr. Leland Eugene : [Leland enters the gym]

Dr. Leland Eugene : Do you have the, uh...

Jake : Yeah, got it right here!

[Jake bends down to grab the control device which allows the weight cups to be programmed. He sets the two on his outer wrists back to zero momentarily]

Dr. Leland Eugene : [Dr. Eugene has already grabbed a couple of weight cups and put them on his inner wrists. He looks to Jake]  Can you set me up for twenty pounds?

    Jake : [winded]  Yeah, sure.

[Jake inputs the weight for Dr. Eugene's weight cups, and Dr. Eugene begins performing slow, controlled curls]

Dr. Leland Eugene : I guess it's a good thing you can't drop these things on your toes.

Jake : That's funny! No, I mean it, I never thought I would laugh at anything you said.

[Jake moves the weight cups on his inner wrists so he can do curls as well]

Dr. Leland Eugene : That's pretty much the way every one feels about me.

Jake : Well, you can lighten up a little.

Dr. Leland Eugene : I know, that's just what I would recommend to someone like me.

Jake : What else would you say?

Dr. Leland Eugene : While you should try to get along with others, it's important to be aware of your own emotions.

Jake : Emotions have their place. Sometimes they help you, and sometimes they just get in the way. Wouldn't you agree, Doctor?

Dr. Leland Eugene : Well, yes. Tell me, Mr. Brown, did you ever think about going into Psychiatry?

Jake : There are enough head shrinkers in the world without me adding to all that.

[He bends down again and sets his weight devices to zero, afterwords, extending his hand to shake hands]

Jake : And forget Mr. Brown, the name's Jake.

    Dr. Leland Eugene : Um...

[Dr. Eugene looks to his weight cups, awkwardly]

    Jake : Oh!

[Jake punches the button on the control device setting Dr. Eugene's weight cups to zero]

Dr. Leland Eugene : [Dr. Eugene returns the handshake]  Leland.

    Jake : Leland?

Dr. Leland Eugene : As any good shrink would say, blame my parents.

    Jake : [Jake laughs]

Dr. Leland Eugene : [Eugene smiles back]

  • Huxley Welles : [Huxley is explaining the difficulties of creating a solar laser to destroy the OTZ Assembly. He presses a button on his console, which displays a 2-D image of twin suns]  See these suns, Jake? Right now they are close to paragee, the closest spot in their orbits. If we are directly in that path, the greatest amount of energy can be directed along any given point. But, you have to be in the right spot at the right time, and not fry the disks. And even then...

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [interrupts]  I don't think... I want to hear anymore.

Capt Jonathan Hays : No, finish Hux.

Huxley Welles : We get one shot.

Capt Jonathan Hays : [there is a long pause from everyone on the bridge. Jonathan, looks to Jake]  Any ideas?

Jake : Yeah, get out of their way.

    Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : What?

Jake : You got all of them in front of us, something behind us, and you got one shot. What else have you got?

Capt Jonathan Hays : I guess we don't have any other choice. Huxley, prepare to lay in a new course away from the OTZ Assembly.

    Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : Jonathan!

Capt Jonathan Hays : Jake's right, Beanie. Our mission is to Berensen's Star, not to fight a battle.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [Beanie has left his station to stand next to Jake and Jonathan, who is at his pilot station]  So you're just gonna run from the OTZ?

Jake : [crosses his arms, looking down]  He's doing the right thing, Beanie.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [slams his hand down on the top of Jonathan's pilot control panel]  NO HE'S NOT!

Capt Jonathan Hays : Come on Beanie! Think of something else RIGHT NOW and I'll do it! Come on!

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : I don't know, but *something*! Don't just run!

Capt Jonathan Hays : [doesn't take his eyes off of Beanie]  The coordinates, Hux.

Huxley Welles : [enters in the new course around the OTZ Assembly]  Course plotted in.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [Beanie, turns angrily away to walk back to his station]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Come back here Beanie.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [Beanie turns back around to face Jonathan. His jaw is set in anger and frustration, and he is breathing heavily]

Capt Jonathan Hays : [calmly]  I'm sorry.

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [sarcastically]  It's not your fault, you did what you could.

Capt Jonathan Hays : [Jonathan continues to stare at Beanie]

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : Excuse me, Captain, I have work to do.

[turns around again and goes back to his station. He flops down in his chair and stares blankly at his console screen, frustrated]

  • Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : [Jake, Huxley, and Jonathan stand around Beanie's terminal on the bridge. Beanie holds the device in his hands that was found in the gym. He turns it over and over trying to figure out what it is]

Jessie 'Beanie' Bienstock : Near as I can tell, it's a long-range transmitter.

[He holds it up for the others to see]

Jake : [takes the device from Beanie to look at it more closely]

Jake : So, this is what our friends back there are using to track us.

Huxley Welles : Smash that thing!

Capt Jonathan Hays : No. Wait. They're following that thing's signal. But if it's in one place, and we're somewhere else...

Capt Jonathan Hays : [looks to Jake]

Capt Jonathan Hays : Mr. Brown, do you think your rail gun can fire a well-aimed rock?

Jake : [Jake cocks his head and smiles]

Jake : Give me ten minutes, Cap'n.
