Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes
Photo: Warner Bros.
As a big fan of both Robert Downey Jr. and director Guy Ritchie my hopes were high for Sherlock Holmes, and it does succeed on some levels, but it never really rises above a one note comedic routine with a mystery at its core. I should also mention I have never read a single word of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective novels and have no idea if this adaptation holds true to the source material or deviates drastically. If you're looking for that kind of commentary I just can't oblige, but I will say it's entertaining as a theatrical outing and sets itself up nicely for franchise capabilities. However, in its attempt to kick start a franchise it does feel as if this one is bloated and trying to disguise the fact it's a bit weak when it comes to story.

12 Action Movies Set During Christmas Season

Christmas is supposed to be a time of giving, peace and good will towards men. But in Hollywood, its also a time for death, destruction and nearly every form of mayhem. Throughout the 80's 90's and (soon to be history) 00's more and more action films seem to take place during “the most wonderful time of the year”. Whether it be a heist, monster invasion or assault by pirates, so much onscreen action occurs on this jolly day that it's a miracle ole Saint Nick isn't killed in the crossfire. Here are just a few action films where Christmas is actually the last thing on the minds of characters fighting for their lives.Batman Returns (1992) Set during the Christmas season where a tree lighting ceremony in Gotham City serves as a battleground for the struggle between Batman (Michael Keaton), The Penguin (Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). What Are the Movies You Identify With the Holidays?

There are holiday movies -- White Christmas, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Love Actually. There are unconventional holiday movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that true film fans dust off and play right alongside Bing Crosby. And then there are the movies that have absolutely nothing to do with the holiday season, but have powerful memories of the holly and the ivy. This is where you can tell me (and the world of Cinematical readers) just what they are.
Confused? Well, I'll give you mine. The biggest one for me is The Lord of The Rings series. It has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, but if you can think back to the early years of the '00s, December was when the deluge of advertising began. They all had release dates of the third weekend in December, and the thrill just carried on through

Jonah Hill Talks 21 Jump Street

Jonah Hill, he of the hilarious group of actors that Apatow built, recently talked a smidgen about the "21 Jump Street" movie he's writing.
The Internet had a sh*t fit about you doing 21 Jump Street because fans take the show so seriously. Are you surprised they don’t get that the show was inherently funny?
Jonah Hill: Yeah, if you look at the opening episode of 21 Jump Street, you see a man looking at a picture of a cop holding a little boy’s hand, and you hear a crazy saxophone solo, and you pan up and it’s Johnny Depp looking at the picture playing the crazy saxophone solo. [Laughs.] We’re not even spoofing the movie. It’s not strictly comedic, either. We’re doing a full-on action movie, blowing shit up. Hmm I always wondered about the tone of this project. I knew it wouldn't full on

When your life is in danger, you hope cops like Riggs and Murtaugh from the "Lethal Weapon" movies will be on your side. If the bad guys are making their move, you want John McClane, Serpico or Axel Foley to come to the rescue. They're the best of the best, the top cops.
But when MTV News visited the set of an upcoming movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, we learned that their film isn't about those types of policemen. Instead, the 2010 comedy, featured on MTV's "Behind the Screen" on Wednesday (December 16), is about "The Other Guys."

Leonardo DiCaprio To Wear Viking Horns In Mel Gibson-Directed Drama

Norse history is going to hit in a big way in 2011. First and foremost, there's "Thor," based on the Marvel comic inspired by Norse mythology. And if Wikipedia is correct (unlikely), there's a chance of a long-ago-rumored live-action "Hagar the Horrible" movie set for release that year. Finally, a drama about Vikings from director Mel Gibson and producer Graham King ("The Departed") is set to begin shooting next fall, meaning it will probably be in theaters at some time the following year.
According to Variety, Viking history enthusiast Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the untitled film, which is currently being scripted by William Monahan (both of whom also had a hand in "The Departed"). The plot has not been revealed, but we can presume this will be a bloody action epic, similar to Gibson's "Braveheart." Perhaps there will also be some sort of focus on the Christianization of Scandinavia during the Viking Age,

For most, Christmas is a happy time rife with warm family memories, selfless gift giving, gentle snowfalls, and the sharing of the season's goodwill tidings.
For others, Christmas is a time when you can't step into an elevator without being subject to the Muzak version of "O Holy Night." When going to your local pharmacy means being guilted into giving up your spare change by a guy with a bell who looks like he just got released from prison.
We've got 6 movie recommendations for those with a more cynical perspective of the season. They offer the chance to enjoy some seasonal cinematic joys with more edge and less good cheer. From German terrorists to singing skeletons, little green monsters to an alcoholic St. Nick, we've got all the bases covered.

Gary Busey named Hollywood's unsexiest man

We know that Johnny Depp is the world’s sexiest man according to People magazine, but how to rate Tinseltown’s (how shall we say?) less attractive male specimens? Seems like it’s not a problem that film site, Moviefone struggles with as they’ve assembled a top ten list of the least desirable leading men in Hollywood. And coming out on top (or should that be the bottom?) is Lethal Weapon actor, Gary Busey. The site argues: “He’s fascinating, he’s outrageous and he has gigantic teeth. What woman could resist the mystery wrapped within an enigma that is Busey? To coin one of his Busey-isms, let’s just say that we are Not Hot (Not One That He Overly Titillates) for Gary.” Eek, sorry Gary – we don’t make the rules! The First 'Iron Man 2' Poster Appears!

Marvel Studios, Paramount and Jon Favreau have given you an early Christmas present. Yahoo! Movies has debuted the first poster for Iron Man 2, and as cheesy as it is to go nuts over marketing, it's an awfully cool poster. It's their exclusive, so you'll have to click the picture to see the entire thing, but I've given you a tiny preview above.
The best part? Those of us who didn't get to see the pants-wetting footage at Comic-Con finally get a glimpse at War Machine! There's something deliciously geeky about the buddy cop stylings of this poster. I could live quite comfortably in a world where Iron Man 2 was something akin to a super-suited Lethal Weapon, couldn't you?
Of course, as nice as the poster is, it's no substitute for seeing these guys actually take flight. Faverau has hinted via Twitter that we might see the first Iron Man 2 trailer this Christmas,

Kevin Smith's Latest Film Is "Average...in a Good Way"

When filmmakers self-promote as much as Kevin Smith does, they typically get the reputation for being a snob. However, when Smith does it, it's often so candid and humorous that he ends up coming off as self-deprecating rather than arrogant. In a recent interview with AICN, Smith described himself as " a big f--in' loser from Jersey" and said that his success has forced him to rethink the films that he makes.
It was devastating the day I realized that, like, I can't do this anymore, 'cause it's too easy at this point. Like, I could do this in my sleep, but it's disingenuous. Like, I love Zack and Miri. I mean, I think it turned out well, but I look at Zack and Miri, and I look at Chasing Amy, and I go, Okay, two movies cut from similar cloth. What's the difference? One is made with the passion and

“Ninja assassin.” You just know that producers Joel Silver -- he helped create the modern action movie with Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, but he’s also responsible for modern schlock such as Gothika and Orphan -- and the Wachowski Brothers (of Matrix fame), professional fanboys all, were peeing in their pants with glee when they came up with that concept. It’s like “monster trucks” and “automatic weapons” and “zombie Nazis”: you take two great things that are awesome separately, and then you put ’em together and it becomes like totally mindblowing, dude.
For certain dudes, at least. While some -- male and female alike, of course -- might prefer the mashed-up awesomeness of, say, “cupcake pony” or “chocolate orgasm” or, heaven help us, “sparkly vampire boyfriend,” the preview crowd with whom I saw Ninja Assassin was absolutely in ecstasy over this bloody concoction of slasher movie blended

Another week, another round of dollars to be spent here on This Week in Blu-ray. And just like last week, there are a few movies worth buying. Well alright, maybe only a few -- which is a welcome sign for anyone who lives by this particular column, as I recommended an unprecedented seven titles as 'buys,' including two television sets (one complete series) and the Gone with the Wind gift set. This week, I've got a much lighter selection of big purchases and a few movies that I think you should probably rent. We begin though, with another must-have title.

Joel Silver, one of the most prolific and successful producers in the history of motion pictures, has produced over 50 films, including the groundbreaking “The Matrix” trilogy, the blockbuster four-part “Lethal Weapon” franchise, and the seminal action films “Die Hard” and “Predator.” To date, Silver’s catalog of films have earned more than $10 billion in worldwide revenue from all sources.
Under his Silver Pictures banner, Silver is currently producing “Sherlock Holmes,” directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams, and set for a Christmas release; and the action thriller “The Book of Eli,” starring Denzel Washington under the direction of Albert and Allen Hughes, and due out January 2010.

Producer Joel Silver has an incredible resume, including many of Hollywood's top properties — the Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Predator, and Matrix franchises. His latest film, Ninja Assassin, opens this week and Silver is in various stages of production on eight other movies, with another dozen or more in development.
With so many different projects, it's hard to keep track of the status of all of them. Thankfully, Latino Review caught up with Silver and probed him about several of the fan-favorite films he is working on. While Silver didn't mention anything about the 3-D adaptation of DC Comics' Swamp Thing that he teased back in August, he did say that he is working on Lobo, another DC adaptation.
We're working really close on that. It's close, yeah. There is a good shot we can make that happen.
