References
Gulliver's Travels (1939)
- floating island of Laputa referenced in the book
Silent Running (1972)
- The end is a homage to the end of 'Silent Running' -- a little portion of a unique garden, looked after by a robot, is saved of the destruction and goes away slowly.
"Rupan sansei: Part II: Farewell My Beloved Lupin (#4.52)" (1980)
- The design of the robots in this episode were reused in this movie.
Kaze no tani no Naushika (1984)
- The small yellow-and-brown animals that play on the robot are exactly the same as Nausicaa's pet fox-squirrel
Referenced in
Mononoke-hime (1997)
- The robots in "Laputa" and the forest animals in "Princess Mononoke" share the exact same design, a clear reference.
A Bug's Life (1998)
Saru gecchu (1999) (VG)
- In both stories there is a large piece of land that rises high up into the sky due to advnaced technology, with a large golden castle housing it, surrounded by vast greenery.
Fainaru fantajî IX (2000) (VG)
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Treasure Planet (2002)
Hauru no ugoku shiro (2004)
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
- At the beginning of "Sky Captain..." a zeppelin docks at the Empire State Building just in the same way of the airship in "Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta". Another reason is the look of the giant robots and their particular way of flying (the arms changes in wings in the same way in the two movies)
Astro Boy (2009)
- The design of Zog echoes the robots from Laputa, in particular the assymetric eyes. Also the overgrown appearance of Zog when Astroboy first finds him mirrors the defunct robots in the gardens on Laputa.
