Amongst other achievements, she has won 12 different Best Actress awards to become the most awarded Chinese actress for a single film, “The Grandmaster”. However, even a highly acclaimed performer had to begin somewhere, and what could be a better way than a film directed by Zhang Yimou, one known to debut wonderful performers. Her very first film is “The Road Home”, Zhang’s last film released in the 20th century.
The movie begins in a black-and-white setting in contemporary China. Luo Yusheng, prompted by the death of his father, returns to his village to check on her grieving mother. Upon reaching the city, he is visited by two village men, one of them being the mayor. They tell him of his mother’s strange request: that his father’s coffin should be...

Chinese indie sales and production finance outfit Rediance has boarded sales on “Ways to Run,” a project in the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinefondation La Residence section. The film picked up a special mention at the prize presentation.
The road movie drama is being directed by Afghan-Dutch director Aboozar Amin, who previously made the documentary “Kabul: A City in the Wind.” “Ways to Run” recounts a slice-of-life story about an older bus driver who gambles away his vehicle and the younger man who works with him. Rediance is also selling Cannes titles “Ghost Tropic,” by Bas Devos, in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs, and restored title “The Horse Thief” by Tian Zhuangzhuang in Cannes Classics.
As a financier, Rediance recently boarded “Memoria” by Thai Palme d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Film history, national cinema and Alfonso Cuarón‘s obsession with a certain Kubrick film are receiving the 4K and VIP treatment this year. The Cannes Classics affords the opportunity for Cuarón to present a midnight screening of The Shining. Among the living legends coming to Cannes we’ll find Lina Wertmüller presenting Seven Beauties and Tian Zhuangzhuang presenting The Horse Thief. Among the non-living legends receiving a bit of stardust, Luis Buñuel and Milos Forman are also being acknowledged. Here is the line-up:

Seven years after his international breakthrough with The Light Thief, Aktan Arym Kubat has returned with "The Horse Thief." Or that's at least what Centaur could have been titled, since the Kyrgyz filmmaker's sixth feature revolves around a man given to riding across wide open steppes on thoroughbreds taken from stables across town.
The stealing aside, other similarities abound between Kubat's latest outing and The Light Thief. Just like the electrician from the 2010 film who tweaks power lines to give electricity to the poor, Centaur's protagonist steals from the corrupt rich, which he considers to be an act of...

“… I don’t trust you as far as I can throw you, but I enjoy the way you lie.”
On a still night in 1876, Seth Bullock executes a man. He hangs him out in front of his jail, from the rafters while a mob demands that the thief be handed over to them for their own version of justice and/or revenge. It’s Bullock’s job as the marshall to perform this act of justice but it’s one that he doesn’t want anymore. There are so many ways this night would be easier for Bullock; he could hand the man over to the mob or he could consider the thief’s propositions for his quick and speedy release with the promise of stolen riches on the way to their mutual destination of Deadwood, a small town well outside of the United States’ borders. Just like Bullock, the...
