French director Jean-Jacques Beineix, who was quoted Tuesday as saying that European and Asian filmmakers should unite to offer an alternative to Hollywood's "industrial machine," has been signed to make a Hollywood movie himself, the Chinese Xinhua news agency reported today (Wednesday). The director told Xinhua that he has agreed to direct an American film next year that will star "a world famous actress." Although Hollywood had beckoned before, he said, the script for the movie was what convinced him to, in Xinhua's words, "cross the line." Said Beineix, whose films include Diva and Betty Blue, "I have decided to walk across the minefield. It is dinner with the devil."
