Movies Forgotten In Time: I Come In Peace

25 December 2009 2:36 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Five years after his now legendary performance as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren was enjoying considerable success having starred in a trio of films that include Red Scorpion, (the original) The Punisher and as popular toy figure He-Man in Masters of the Universe. The films ranged from okay to just plain awful, but Lundgren had an onscreen presence that was more than just his six foot five frame. The guy had personality and for a native of Stockholm, Sweden, he could easily adopt an American accent. The nineties saw Lundgren in a string of action films that included Showdown in Little Tokyo with the late Brandon Lee, Universal Soldier with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the Keanu Reeves vehicle Johnny Mnemonic which to this day remains Ludgren's last film that had an American theatrical release. By the close of the decade Lundgren's films were only released straight to video sin the U. »

18 Other Slowpoke Directors

James Cameron went 12 years between feature films—and other directors have gone even longer, for reasons ranging from hubris to legal problems to, say, Nazi oppression. Slate looks at 18 other filmmakers who took their sweet time: Sylvester Stallone, 21-year gap: Between helming Rocky IV and Rocky Balboa , Stallon was just too busy starring in other action movies. Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot , anyone? George Lucas, 22-year gap: After directing the first movie of his original Star Wars trilogy in 1977, Lucas left the next two to relative unknowns—and then waited until 1999, when technology had finally »

'Blind Side' Tackles Post-Thanksgiving Blahs

6 December 2009 4:07 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Though The Blind Side still packed a wallop, the movies as a whole saw a typical post-Thanksgiving slide over the weekend. However, due to the momentum from last weekend's record Thanksgiving gross, overall business was the highest the timeframe has ever seen (although not in terms of attendance), up 21 percent over the same period last year.

As indicated by their close grosses last weekend, The Blind Side out-paced The Twilight Saga: New Moon to claim the top spot. Down 49 percent, the football-themed drama had the best hold among nationwide releases, racking up an estimated $20.4 million. With a super $129.3 million tally in just 17 days, it surpassed Rocky IV to become the highest-grossing sports drama on record (though it 's still a far cry off in terms of attendance). Among football movies, only the Adam Sandler comedies The Waterboy and The Longest Yard made more, and Blind Side will soon overtake them as well. »

Blu-Ray Review: Rocky Balboa Fights His Way to ‘Undisputed Collection’

29 November 2009 2:01 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There are very few characters as iconic as Rocky Balboa. A few images, sound bites, or even just a few notes of a song and audiences of the right age are transported back to the first time they saw the Best Picture-winning “Rocky,” the film that made Sylvester Stallone a star over three decades ago. That beloved sports film and the five sequels that followed have been collected on Blu-Ray for the first time in “Rocky: The Undisputed Collection”.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

The original “Rocky” looks a little more dated with each passing year, but the spirit of the film is still effective. Watching it again for the first time in years, I was struck by how many films that followed it have copied the basic beats and tone of the film. Stallone’s smartest move with “Rocky” was keeping it simple; making it a story to which everyone could relate. »

Rocky: The Undisputed Collection – Blu-ray Review

18 November 2009 12:37 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Rocky

Times like these, I hate reviewing classic films. What can I add that hasn’t already been said or covered about the 1976 Best Picture winner? Well, other than what film should have won it, but Rocky is a more than worthy candidate for the statue. It sometimes gets criticism for not showing enough of the epic fight at the end, but I feel that’s a brilliant move as we know these men will go the distance. The performances are excellent, the direction is up to par, and the story is a timeless classic. Truthfully, the alternate ending where Rocky throws the fight would have been interesting to see.

9/10

Rocky II

I’d forgotten what a depressing trip this was, which makes Rocky’s eventual win that much sweeter by the end of the film. This marked Sylvester Stallone’s second directorial debut and for the most part he »

Movie:

Rocky: Yes, to watch it now, the film crawls in the beginning … and middle. But this is clearly the best of the bunch. Most rewatchable? No. But clearly the most quality film. Rocky is a million to one shot. »

Celebrate The Birthday Of The Ak-47 Inventor With These Fire-Powered Movie Moments

10 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today marks a joyful anniversary for action movie fans and a rather unpleasant one for gun control advocates. Exactly 90 years ago, Mikhail Kalashnikov, the man who invented the Ak-47 assault rifle, was born in a small Siberian village. If we can, though, let us put aside the Ak's bloody legacy on the battlefield and focus on all the badassery the weapon has unleashed on the big screen.

Whether they're battling Russians, trading in black market goods or bang-bang-banging their way through the city streets, movie characters have embraced the trusty Ak or later variants like the Akm or Sks. And we, in turn, have embraced those bullet-spewing beauties. Here are some of our cinematic favs (click the image above to check out our Ak-47 flipbook gallery)...

Conan Cameo For Dolph Lundgren?

10 November 2009 11:44 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The man responsible for the terror that was Captain Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and the joy that was He-Man in Masters of the Universe revealed to MTV that he’s in talks for an unnamed part in the upcoming Conan reboot.  Lundgren caught MTV New’s attention with this little ditty:

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan

As to whether anything was definite, the man went on to say:

“It’s too early”

Regarding a question about when he might know for sure, he responded:

“probably next year”

He-Man need not go on.

Lundgren will also be appearing in the upcoming Sly Stallone-directed mercenary flick, The Expendables, which has the same production team as Conan. He-Man can network.

The new Conan is to be directed by Marcus Nispel (who replaced Brett Ratner) and penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.  Nispel helmed Friday the 13th »

As I am sure Scott (aka, Dolph Fanboy #1) is still sound asleep (slacker) I will personally offer this announcement on behalf of all the movie geeks…

1957 – A little boy was born 52 years ago on this day in Stockholm, Sweden named Dolph Lundgren. This little boy would grow up to become the muscle icon and action star we know today. Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and memorable roles in The Punisher, Showdown In Little Tokyo, Universal Soldier, Johnny Mnemonic and a slew of other hard-hitting action films in which he was the star. Dolph Lundgren Discusses The Expendables

30 October 2009 2:52 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Expendables is shaping up to be the magnum opus of action movies, with nearly every current and former tough-guy actor and action superstar on board to tell the story of a group of "expendable" mercenaries who team up to overthrow an evil South American dictator. Written and directed by Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables has been described as Sly's answer to today's "soft" action heroes.

One of the starring tough guys in The Expendables is Dolph Lundgren, Stallone's Rocky IV nemesis. In a recent interview with Movieweb, Lundgren confirmed that Stallone is hoping to bring back the days of the "real" action hero.

I never came with a conscious plan to replace anyone else. Stallone does feel that way. He is a real tough guy in real life, and he gets to act that out. If you meet him and work with him, he is what he is. He is »

The legendary action star tells all about Sylvester Stallone's magnum opus

Dolph Lundgren is one of the many "tough guy" icons that is set to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action extravaganza The Expendables. Next week, he has his own film coming out that he wrote and directed called Command Performance. And boy, is it a doozey! True fans of the action genre won't want to miss this story of a rock and roll drummer named Joe who battles terrorists at a Russian pop venue. It is one of the funnest movies of 2009, and a blast of fresh air for those tired of the many wimpy actors currently ruling our Cineplex scene. We recently caught up with Dolph on the streets of Los Angeles to chat with him about his latest project. You can read all about Command Performance in our DVD section. Dolph Lundgren Gives One Hell of a Command Performance!

29 October 2009 7:42 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The action star directs this one-of-a-kind rock and roll hostage thriller

Dolph Lundgren has directed, maybe not the best film of the year, but certainly one of the coolest, strangest, funniest fuck-em-up hostage thrillers seen in (at least) the last five years. Not one to take himself or his image too seriously, Command Performance is a tour de force that proves the legendary muscle man (who first made his appearance known in Rocky IV as Russian boxer Ivan Drago) still has what it takes to decimate a room full of heavily armed bad guys. Its no lie when I say Command Performance is hands down the most fun you'll have with any action movie being released this year. It earns 2009's Mega-Awesome Achievement Award simply for having the balls to pull off many scenes like the one below:

What are Your Favorite Winter Holiday Themed Movies?

26 October 2009 2:39 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I wasn't quite sure how to properly word the headline for this post considering I want to make sure you understand I am talking about the season pretty much running from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but I also want to make sure you know the film itself doesn't have to necessarily be about the holidays.

Take Die Hard for instance, it's set during Christmas time, but it isn't a Christmas film. However, it fits in with what I am looking for here. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Eyes Wide Shut, Fanny and Alexander, Batman Returns, Gremlins, The Thin Man and When Harry Met Sally are other examples. Hell, I would even say Rocky IV and Lethal Weapon count. As a matter of fact, I would say the non-Christmas, Christmas movies are the more interesting additions. How about The Shining or even Psycho?

Then, of course, I personally love films such as Love, »

Because You Asked For It: Stallone Wants To Make Rocky 7

25 October 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Several sites are reporting that, according to an interview with Tele5 Germany, Sly Stallone wants to make a seventh Rocky movie. But can it make up for Rocky IV? Will it be better than Rocky IV? Doubtful, on both accounts. But what more could you ask for? Rocky Balboa was surprisingly solid, and the Rocky franchise is one of sports movies' greatest. So, go learn German, read the interview, and report back to us. Translated from Babel Fish, the text looks like this: I know people would laugh at it, as I would if someone were making The Godfather Part 10. Enough! But I also know that if I succeed, it will be because this is a film about aging, not about boxing. I know it will provoke criticism. Even my wife said to me, Leave it. You'll embarrass the children. But I said, if I do not try, I an a very unfortunate man. One »

Rocky Jumping Back in the Ring

25 October 2009 3:47 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

I’m a huge fan of the Rocky movies. I have been since 3rd grade when I was home sick for a week and my dad decided to rent all five of the movies for me.

My personal favorite in the series is Rocky IV, in which Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky fights Dolph Lundgren’s intimidatingly droid-esque Communist. Seriously, it’s epic. Classic underdog story, coupled with an excellent montage bit.

Rocky V was an unfortunate follow-up to the fourth film, which Stallone himself even once rated 0 out of 10 in an interview.

Luckily, Stallone decided to add a sixth film to the franchise with Rocky Balboa which, while not amazing, was pretty decent and managed to redeem the series after Rocky V.

Now Stallone is ready to take Rocky Balboa back to the ring. After Stallone wraps up with Rambo 5 and The Expendables, he’s planning on tackling Rocky VII. »

Exclusive: Dolph Lundgren Gives Us a Special ‘Command Performance’

14 October 2009 8:51 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Yesterday we rocked you with an Expendables promo trailer that included the awesome badass that is Dolph Lundgren. Just last week, as part of our Fantastic Fest coverage, Brian Salisbury raved about Dolph in his Universal Soldier: A New Beginning review. We've interviewed the man, we've applauded his early work and we've interviewed him some more. It is safe to say that without Dolph Lundgren, we probably wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. Luckily, he exists. And he's got a new movie in the works, Command Performance. And to help get the word out about this new flick, in which Dolph plays a drummer who beats some ass to save a hot chick, we've offered to host an exclusive clip. But that's not all. In addition to the clip, Dolph was kind enough to give us a little custom intro, just for the readers of Film School Rejects. Check it out below. Yep »

Fantastic Fest Interview: Dolph Lundgren from 'Universal Soldier: A New Beginning'

Dolph Lundgren with the Alamo Drafthouse's Lyrae Anderson

Dolph Lundgren isn't the first name that springs to mind when you think "chemical engineer," is it? You might be surprised to know that the guy who has made a career out of playing muscular bad dudes in movies has a masters in that field from the University of Sydney, and he was also a Fulbright scholar to MIT. However, he dropped out after two weeks to pursue acting full time, and that's left us with his performances in everything from Rocky IV to The Punisher to Universal Soldier.

He'll also be going toe to toe with Sylvester Stallone once more in The Expendables, but we found him returning to his Universal Soldier roots at Fantastic Fest in Austin with a sneak peek at Universal Soldier: A New Beginning.
