New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week. “Downton” exhibit arrives stateside.Do you still mourn the loss of “Downton Abbey”? If so, you will certainly not want to miss “Downtown Abbey: The Exhibition,” beginning Nov. 18 at 218 West 57th St. A direct transfer from across the pond, this will be the exhibit’s North American debut, and will include everything fans loved about the PBS drama, specifically, the couture and culture. (Tickets: $30) Carnegie Hall pays tribute to female composers. Two of Broadway’s current mainstays, Betsy Wolfe of “Waitress” and Adam Kantor of “The Band’s Visit,” will take a night off from their respective shows to sing to a different house.

Dare2Draw is one of those cool events that I never want to miss and am always so happy after attending.
Founded by Charles David Chenet (now its Executive Director), Dare2Draw may seem like a comics-drawing class at first glance but it’s really so much more. In fact, this Saturday’s event will be celebrating the works and legacies of comic pioneers Will Eisner and Jack Kirby and celebrating their Centennial mark in the sequential arts.
Chenet describes this long-running organization as a mentoring, supportive and networking organization for artists of all levels. Dare2Draw is also designed to cultivate the awareness of and appreciation for the study of sequential art, and to the “furtherance and preservation of the comic book medium’s contributions to literacy, art, and culture, through outreach programs, events, and projects.”
I find these events to be invigorating. They are part drawing class, part lecture,...

If ever a man got to live out his dream, it was Robert Osborne. 23 years ago he was hired to be the on-camera host for Turner Classic Movies. He was the perfect man for the job because his enthusiasm was genuine and his knowledge was vast. Yet I don’t think the people at TCM realized how indelibly he would become identified with the network — or how connected his viewers would become with him.
I can testify to this, having watched the reaction of people who traveled from all over the country to attend the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. When Robert would appear in the lobby of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel he’d be mobbed like a rock star. He represented everything these fans loved about TCM and what it stood for: a pathway to vintage Hollywood and great movies of the past.

This story first appeared in the May 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. John Oliver is sitting behind his large wooden desk in his barely furnished office on the eighth floor of 555 West 57th St., one floor below CBS' 60 Minutes. There are no books on the metal-and-wood bookcase behind him. The TV is switched to CNN, on mute. It is mid-March, and several rooms on the floor are in various stages of construction; in one, heaps of plaster and drywall litter the floor. Oliver and his executive producer, Tim Carvell, still are hiring writers

Lovely ladies like Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and Natalie Dormer all posed for the paparazzi outside the pop-up attraction, located at 3 West 57th Street.
Meanwhile, Kit Harington and John Bradley represented the gents and built up plenty of hype for the upcoming third season of the hit show.
Bradley talked with press about his love for the gig- "That's the thing about this show. We are so spoiled because most TV shows have maybe one great plot if they're lucky. We've got 4 or 5 really strong narratives that could stand alone all on their own. It's an incredible task to get that all on camera."
As for the intense filming schedule, John added, "We shoot in Morocco and Belfast and Coatia and Iceland.

New York — New York's entertainment industry moved closer to full throttle Monday, as a new week and largely restored downtown power meant something of a return to normalcy for the city's upended cultural landscape.
While Broadway theaters and midtown TV studios were back in business within about two days of Superstorm Sandy, much of downtown New York – its off-Broadway theaters, independent movie theaters, Lower East Side concert halls and Chelsea galleries – only got power back late Saturday.
For the first time, the Office of Film Theatre and Broadcasting began issuing permits on a case-by-case basis for film shoots in exterior locations, meaning the city streets would again be providing background for the two dozen TV series shooting in New York and the dozen-plus movies in production. Permits for location shooting in the city's Zone A – including Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn – were still not being issued.

For some in the entertainment industry looking to recover losses due to the devastating hurricane that hit the Northeast earlier this week, a broken construction crane dangling a thousand feet in the air is emblematic. The broken crane loomed for days above West 57th Street in Manhattan within proximity of Carnegie Hall. As a result of the imminent danger, the famous concert venue had to cancel performances all five days this week. Some have estimated that Hurricane Sandy could amount to tens of millions of dollars in damages for the entertainment industry, but is it possible to get a firm

On Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 6:00 Pm, Colony Music -- located on Broadway and 49th Street in New York City -- closed its doors for the last time. This venerable music store had been open for over 60 years, selling CDs, sheet music, and music-related memorabilia, including entertainment-related autographs. Its closing marks the end of an era (or maybe more than one) in New York City: after the closing of Patelson's Music House (which specialized in sheet music and scores for classical music) in 2009 after an 89-year run, Colony was nearly the last store devoted primarily to sheet music and music scores -- mostly for Broadway, jazz, pop, and rock, but also some classical music -- and by far the most visible.

"I had made a decision that I wanted to do it [naturally]. I had been watching all these baby-bonding videos, and [without epidural] when the baby comes out it goes straight onto the breast" she explains. "Then they showed ones right after the epidural, and that didn't happen. The baby was a little bit drugged up, and I was like 'Well, I don't want that.' I wanted to give him the best possible start in life I could."

"I didn't ever intend to be a journalist," Meredith Vieira told a New York City audience during a sit-down interview for 92Y's Ruth Stanton Illustrious Women Series on January 25. The Emmy-award-winning journalist was relaxed on stage, answering questions from her old "Today" pal Dr. Gail Saltz, as well as the audience.
"I did have sex with George Clooney," Vieira joked, saying she knew this would be the audience's top question of the evening. "I only did it twice because I wanted to give him a second chance." This humor is part of what makes Vieira so well-liked by many -- something "Today" fans grew accustomed to in her banter with Matt Lauer.
In her humor, Vieira also revealed some of her insecurities. For someone who has accomplished so much in her life -- a 25-year marriage, three children and a career working for some of the biggest names in news and media,...

The Directors Guild of America has been celebrating their 75th anniversary with a series of panels and events at the DGA Theater on West 57th Street called 'Game Changers.' Last Thursday, they presented a fascinating master class on documentary filmmaking, with doc A-listers sharing clips from their filmographies and engaging in two terrific panel discussions. First up, DGA President Michael Apted - himself an acclaimed documentarian, with the seven films (to date) in his 7 Up series complementing his narrative film career - welcomed the audience, celebrating the documentary films that 'inform, illuminate, and influence' audiences. Director Marc Levin (Slam) introduced the first panel with a clip reel, highlighting films from filmmakers whose work might be categorized as observational documentary - 'directors [who are] defenders of the very idea of creative rights and visions' in this era where such visions can be stifled. The very entertaining and thought-provoking clip reel included the...

"I can't say I have a method." That's Jackie Presti speaking. "I never understand any method. Does any method fit every person? We're not cookie cutters." Framed on a wall in her double-door, soundproof space is a picture of Frank Sinatra, along with other show business–related wall ornaments. Occupying the room most importantly is an upright piano with piano seat, a black metal music stand, and a small, low wooden stool. (More later about that unprepossessing stool.) To call the area cramped only begins to describe it, but at the same time the space unmistakably suggests that high-octane work is accomplished there.Unstrangling...
