Probably due to lack of skills or hope. Sam worked as the manager of the local movie theater where he is constantly berated by his boss, Mr. Bellow. Because he is a loyal worker and though it hurts him greatly, he has no choice but to tolerate it because he does not want to get fired.
Because the movie was set in 1953, there were school laws that his hair could not be grown down to his shirt collar. If he did not cut his hair, Mr. Collins, the school principal, would bar him from competing in future track meets. After finally convincing his father, Sam, the two go to his doctor brother out of town and wrap his head with bandages to hide the long hair. The ruse allowed him to compete in the track meets.
After punching out her new boyfriend, Robert Woods, Bonnie was impressed that she asked Eugene if they could be a couple again, but since she already betrayed him, Eugene turns her down.
Sadly, no. Sam suffered a massive heart attack while carrying heavy film cans upstairs to the projection room. At the track meet, a policeman arrives to tell Eugene and Cathy the bad news.
Probably. Art was lazy and the only reason he could not be fired was because he was not a union member.
A grown-up Eugene returns to his hometown for the big premiere of his latest movie. He is embraced by his wife, Cathy and the two are met up by Mr. Bellow. Because of the way he treated his father, Eugene tells Bellow that five lights on the theater marquee are out and tells him to do it himself.
