  • David Lean's first (and last) film after a 14-year hiatus from the industry. He was so devastated by the negative reviews of Ryan's Daughter (1970/I), he dropped out of the filmmaking scene.

  • The relationship between David Lean and Alec Guinness deteriorated during the making of the movie. The final straw came for Guinness when he found out that a large chunk of his scenes had been left on the cutting floor by Lean. Neither man ever met or spoke to the other again.

  • The original Broadway production of "A Passage to India" by Santha Rama Rau (born in Tamil Nadu, India) opened at the Ambassador Theater in New York on January 31, 1962 and ran for 109 performances.

  • The character of Mr. Hadley as filmed was a nice little cameo but in editing most of his scenes were deleted and all of his lines were cut as well( source Adam Blackwood).
