Sam Raimi’s seminal cabin-in-the-woods cautionary tale The Evil Dead and its sequels are, paradoxically, somewhat hallowed ground in the horror realm; they are to demons as George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is to zombies. It’s a testament to the reverence for the series that in an entertainment genre filled to bursting with copycats and remakes, no one dared to touch the franchise proper for 30 years. Even now, this reimagining is spearheaded by Raimi himself, co-producing with part of the original team as well as the films’ breakout cult star, Bruce Campbell. Raimi tapped the director of a »

Lydia Cornell is a radio host, but to some of us, she was Sara Rush, the bouncy blonde daughter on Too Close for Comfort in the 1980s. She makes a powerful argument in favor of marriage equality in the name of her lesbian sister, but also in the name of Jesus.
Senator Rand Paul, for all his talk of a lack of government interference in citizens lives, really hates the idea of marriage equality. He doesn't think he can win on the federal level, so his goal is simple: rely on bigotry and fear at the state level to delay it for decades or more. "I think right now if we say we're only going to [have] a federally mandated one man, one woman marriage, we're going to lose that battle because the country is going the other way right now. If we're to say each state can decide, I think »

Columbia TriStar's remake of Evil Dead was propelled by a wave of positive reviews and promises of excessive gore to a strong opening day at the North American box office. Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park 3D also opening strong in second place, while last weekend's champ G.I. Joe: Retaliation slipped to third.
Evil Dead bowed at 3,025 locations to the tune of $11.9 million during its first 24 hours of release. With a production budget estimated at only $17 million, the remake of Sam Raimi's classic with Raimi and Bruce Campbell serving as producers will easily top $20 million through Sunday, which also happens to be more than the previous three Evil Dead films made at the box office combined during their theatrical runs. Somewhere between $25 and $30 million seems a safe bet for Evil Dead's opening weekend.

"The Evil Dead" opened well enough on Friday to make it a likely fifth horror-related film to make #1 in 2013. The twelve top-ranked horror flicks thus far have kept the year's to-date grosses from falling off more than they might have otherwise due to several underperforming costly would-be tentpoles. The Sony remake of Sam Raimi's classic cult 1980s gorefest should prove an easy #1 for the weekend. The combined Thursday night/Friday gross could be the high end of its performance, however. The total will be significantly above its production budget, and even if it falls fast the ultimate worldwide performance and post-theater appeal should make it a solid success. In second place for the day was the 3-D relaunch of another blast from the past, "Jurassic Park." Its Friday gross looks to be about the same as that of "Titanic 3D" last year. Two key differences -- that reissue opened two days earlier, »

After watching the red band trailer over and over the big day is here. Evil Dead has hit theaters! Produced by writer-director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) of 1981's The Evil Dead, the creative reins for this reimagining were handed off to new writer-director Fede Alvarez. Alvarez originally met with Raimi to produce a full-length feature based on his short Panic Attack (2009). When that film got put on hold, Raimi asked the young filmmaker if he'd be interested rebooting Evil Dead. He definitely was. Fans of the splatter genre should be too. The premise is nearly identical to the original: Two guys and three gals decide to spend a weekend in a old wooden shack and accidentally unleash the dead »

Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" remake spooked up an early lead at the weekend box office. The horror flick opened Friday to $11.9 million across 3,025 theaters. "Evil Dead," which stars Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez, among others, has received a CinemaScore of C+ from moviegoers. THR puts "Evil Dead" on pace for a $27 million weekend.
Also opening this week was "Jurassic Park 3D." The modern showing of the 1993 film made $7 million on Friday across 2,771 theaters. This puts "Jurassic Park" on pace for a $18.5 million weekend, THR reports. Over the course of its original box office run, "Jurassic Park" reached a total domestic gross of $364.1 million.
Taking the number three spot on Friday was "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Channing Tatum, and Bruce Willis, among others, "G.I. Joe" made $6.4 million at 3,734 theaters. The remake of "Evil Dead" brought horror fans out in force on Friday (April 5), snagging the top box-office spot in the process.
The movie, produced by original "Evil Dead" director and star Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, earned $11.9 million on Friday (including $1.8 million from late-night shows on Thursday). It's now on pace to make $25 million or more for the weekend, ahead of initial projections of around $20 million.
The 3D rerelease of "Jurassic Park" took second place Friday with an estimated $7 million haul. That's in line with what forecasters were predicting and should put it on par with the $17.3 million "Titanic 3D" made on the same weekend last year.
Last weekend's top movies, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" ($6.7 million) and "The Croods" ($5.8 million), dropped to third and fourth on Friday. "Tyler Perry's Temptation" rounds out the Top 5 with $3.4 million. »

Moviegoers got a blast from the past this Friday as Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" topped "Jurassic Park" at the box office. The remake of the 1981 cult horror film directed by Raimi (he produced this time around) scared up $11.9 million, and will earn somewhere around $27 million for the three-day period. The 3D re-release of Steven Spielberg's 1993 smash "Jurassic Park" met with bigger numbers than expected, finding its way to $7 million. It will likely earn around $22 million for the weekend. What started out with a bunch of foolish pranks and fun became a very sad week for the world of movie lovers. It’s terrible to lose any one of us, and surely many cinephiles die by the day, but this guy was among the biggest and most important. As it turns out, this week’s Reject Recap seems more filled with bad stories than good. Of course, it’s a week in which we saw a lot of recycling and — appropriately for the holiday that fell recently — resurrection of properties including Jurassic Park, Evil Dead and Finding Nemo. Looking over the list of the ten big stories, it’s a pretty disappointing time for us in general. Well, it’s not disappointing as a reader, as we hosted a bunch of great writing this week and also found some notable features by friends at other sites. Strewn through, we share some videos of Roger Ebert‘s »

First of all, I'm a huge fan Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell's Evil Dead franchise. Evil Dead was the first real horror movie I saw when I was a kid, and from that moment on, I was hooked on the horror genre. Ever since Evil Dead I've enjoyed watching horror films both good, bad, and so bad they're good. I was a little pissed off when I heard that Evil Dead was going to get remade. I hate remakes; I'm not a big fan of the unoriginality of Hollywood these days. But the more I heard about the film, the more that Raimi talked about the reasons he wanted it remade, the more that shell of remake hatred started to break down. Raimi's original vision for The Evil Dead was a hardcore horror story. I think his original movie delivers that, but there's still a lot of unintentional cheesy campiness, »

The box office was alive thanks to the Evil Dead on Friday. The $17 million horror remake, from TriStar, FilmDistrict, and Ghost House took in a terrific $10.1 million on its debut Friday — the same amount that fellow horror release Mama earned in its first 24 hours en route to a $28.4 million weekend earlier this year. Evil Dead will likely be more frontloaded than that film due to built-in anticipation from fans of the 1981 original, but it could still earn about $27 million over the Friday-to-Sunday period.
Of course, Sony reported that Evil Dead earned $11.9 million on Friday, explaining that that number was “including Thursday late shows. »

The April box office is off to a promising start with the launch of Evil Dead. From 3,025 locations, the horror remake earned an estimated $10.1 million on Friday - including $1.8 million from its Thursday 10 pm and midnight screenings. Evil Dead will fall short of recent genre remakes like Friday the 13th ($40.9 million); but the reboot of the 1983 cult-classic is already running ahead of projections and could realize as much as $28 million through Sunday. Jurassic Park 3D, the latest blockbuster to receive a digital makeover, took in a more modest $7 million from 2,771 locations. Though good enough for Friday’s second spot, the re-release is expected to fall behind G.I. Joe: Retaliation and The Croods on the weekend chart. We’ll have full details tomorrow. Title Friday Total 1. Evil Dead $10,100,000 $10.1 2. Jurassic Park 3D $7,000,000 $7 3. G.I. Joe: Retaliation $6,400,000 $69.9 4. The Croods $5,800,000 $110.5 5. Sony’s “Evil Dead,” a remake that raises Sam Raimi’s 1981 original from its cult classic grave, is rising slightly higher than expectations this weekend. “Evil Dead” earned $11.9 million Friday, with a three-day haul of around $27 million projected.
The TriStar, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Productions release got off to a strong start against players with a little broader appeal this frame, including Universal’s “Jurassic Park” 3D rerelease and Fox-DreamWorks Animations “The Croods.” Friday will almost definitely be the scarer’s strongest day, with that early jump quite certainly enough positioning the film to win the weekend.
Behind it, “Jurassic Park” is falling tightly in line with expectations that were a little unsure heading into the weekend. The actioner took $7 million Friday for second, and will likely land in the high teens through Sunday as expected, but a pair of strong holdovers are expected to muscle it down to fourth place in that time. »

Today’s film is the 2005 short El Cojonudo. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. Alvarez gained attention as a filmmaker with a series of short films, some of which caught the eye of Sam Raimi. Alvarez, however, really rose to prominence when he was tapped by Raimi to make his feature film debut with Evil Dead, a remake of Raimi’s 1981 horror classic. Evil Dead opened in North American theatres this weekend.
