Oprah's favorite chef bringing comfort to Tlc

23 November 2009 1:29 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Hmm... it seems like every network is expanding at the waistline. That is, a bunch of them are getting into food in a big way. Like Fine Living becoming the Cooking Channel. Tlc is also adding more yum yum to the schedule. And the latest has an Oprah angle. Perhaps it's a coincidence, but just about everyone connected to Oprah Winfrey is getting a TV show these days... Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, Nate Berkus. And now chef Art Smith has landed a show on Tlc. Smith is well-known as Oprah's personal chef.

Art Smith was on Bravo's Top Chef Masters last summer -- that was his audition -- and he showed himself as a homey, pleasant, unpretentious cook. For Tlc, he's going to host Craving Comfort, with the emphasis on Southern comfort food.

Friday Rewind: Tubefilter News of the Week – November 6, 2009

6 November 2009 4:47 PM, PST | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Comedy Central's Atom.com isn't the cable network's only source for web series to snatch up, as this week it announced it was calling up one of The Onion's hit online shows, Onion Sports Network for a test run. And east coast hipster favorite The Burg returned to the internet this week with its first full-length episode since 2007(!). Indie web shop Dinosaur Diorama is also busy cranking out more All's Faire, which prances out 15 new episodes later this month. Bro-tastic Break.com had its own sports web series debut this week with Social Sportz Net, with lead sponsor Southern Comfort on board. And speaking of guys, the issue of male circumcision is apparently a landmine for new parents, and Deca's new Parents Ask series entered the game this week adding fuel to the fire. Yesterday came another update on the Fred web-series-turned-movie, with more casting notices coming out. Speculation »

Break Pours SoCo Into ‘Social Sportz Net’, More On Tap

3 November 2009 11:04 PM, PST | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Break Media rolled out its latest branded original web series today, Social Sportz Net, with Southern Comfort signing on for the party. The whiskey maker—technically its a whiskey flavored liqueur—has been one of the most bullish in the digital space lately since announcing this summer it was moving its entire $10 million advertising budget online. While the show's branded page is pretty sparse and could use some design help, the show itself is a passable sendup of Epsn's Sportscenter, with a running ticker of frat scores of beer pong and kick ball rolling by. It's not quite the pitch-perfect lampoon of 24-hour cable news that is the Onion News Network, but Ssn has some laughable moments. It follows two twentysomething males—smack dab in the middle of Break's heavily male 18-34 demo—competing in an eight episode arc to throw the most "killer house party." Southern Comfort gets worked in of course, »

Venture Capital: Don't Call It a Comeback

15 October 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Venture funds may be having trouble raising new funding, but they are still investing what money they have. The third quarter of 2009 saw venture capital activity hit $6.1B, a healthy 14% increase in venture capital activity over Q2 2009 when venture capital investment stood at $5.3B. The investments were spread across 678 deals (up from 613 in the prior quarter), according to ChubbyBrain, an information services company tracking venture capital, angel investor, private equity and incubator activity. Both the funding and deal levels represent a marked increase over the abysmal levels of venture investing seen in Q1 2009 when the proverbial bottom fell out.

The venture capital funding total doesn't compare favorably to Q3 2008, of course, when ChubbyBrain data shows venture investing stood at $7.2B. Whether venture investing will reach historic levels again anytime soon is an open question. While the pundits have a variety of opinions and prognostications, it is too early to tell »

Walter Hill: The Hollywood Interview

Director Walter Hill.

Kicking Ass with Walter Hill

by Jon Zelazny

Action flicks. Two-fisted tales. Guy movies. Whatever you want to call them, writer, producer, and director Walter Hill is one of the living masters, with a resume full of classics from The Getaway (1972), to the Alien series, and the definitive eighties action-comedy blockbuster, 48 Hrs. (1982).

2009 marks the 30th anniversary of The Warriors (1979), Hill’s surreal “street gang on the run” cult classic, and his breakout success as a director.

Jon: A couple years ago, you did an audio commentary and on-camera intro for a new DVD edition of The Warriors. It was the first time I’d ever seen you; is it my imagination, or have you kept a low profile over the years?

Walter Hill: I’d never done a commentary before on one of my films. I don’t like the idea of explaining a movie; I »

Gay Of The Dead 9: Bruce Labruce and Otto; Or, Up With Dead People.

29 March 2009 11:03 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The word “notorious” can be loosely tossed around when describing a filmmaker that veers even slightly outside of mainstream cinematic confines, but when applied to Bruce Labruce, the term couldn’t be more accurate. Scenes of hardcore gay porn, Nazi fetishism and explicit gore, either separately or brazenly combined, are just a few of the subjects Labruce explores in films like No Skin Off My Ass, Skin Gang, Super 8 1/2, Hustler White and The Raspberry Reich.

Labruce’s latest film, Otto; Or, Up With Dead People, is a meditation on homosexuality, cinema and intimate relationships through the filter of a zombie flick. The first of his films to employ a full-on horror convention (zombies), Otto furthers Labruce’s boundary pushing reputation. And yet, mainstream audiences have taken the bait. Yes, it’s true—Otto is the first zombie film with hardcore gay porn scenes to screen at Sundance.
