Jacques Haitkin, the cinematographer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street films as well as myriad other horror and action movies, has died. He passed on March, 21 after a battle with Als and Leukemia, according to a Facebook post by his son Zak Haitkin. He was 72.
More recently, Haitkin had worked as second unit director of photography or camera operator on some of the industry’s biggest titles, including Black Panther, Venom, Captain America: Civil War (and Winter Soldier), Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, Captain Phillips, The Expendables, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: The Last Stand and Kong: Skull Island.
Below is his son Zac’s statement.

Jacques Haitkin, who served as the cinematographer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street movies, has died. He was 72.
Haitkin died March 21 in San Francisco after a battle with Als and leukemia, his son Zak Haitkin told The Hollywood Reporter. “He always said he never worked a day in his life because he loved his job so much,” he noted.
Haitkin also manned a camera and/or did second-unit work on three Fast & Furious films, two Captain America movies and other action features including Cherry 2000 (1987), Last Man Standing (1995), The Expendables (2010), X-Men: First Class (2011), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Black Panther (2018), Venom (2018) and 21 Bridges (2019).
Haitkin was the D.P. on A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), directed by Wes Craven, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), directed by Jack Sholder. He reunited with Craven on Shocker (1989) and with Sholder on The Hidden (1987) and Beeper (2002).

As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.
Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

Frank Moreno, who was known for screening films at Cannes for Roger Corman’s New World Pictures to purchase and distribute in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s, died Wednesday in Florida. He was 82 and died after a brief battle with cancer, according to his daughter.
Moreno was a promoter for such Art films as Ingmar Bergman’s Cries and Whispers and Federico Fellini’s Amarcord, both the biggest US grossing pictures of the directors’ careers up to that point.
He also touted Volker Scholondorff’s The Tin Drum, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1980; Bruce Beresford’s Breaker Morant; Fantastic Planet, the winner of numerous animated awards; and Bergman’s The Magic Flute.
In addition, Moreno acquired and distributed many mainstream commercial pictures, including The Private Eyes, starring Tim Conway and Don Knotts; managed theater circuits, including one out of Florida; and was a consultant to movie producers,...

More than half of the programme of this year’s cancelled Hkiff is screening at K11 Art House in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong International Film Festival (Hkiff) usually takes place over the Easter holidays in March-April, but this year was first postponed to late August, then eventually cancelled, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
While many festivals in Asia have managed to take place with physical screenings, albeit without international guests, Hkiff fell victim to unfortunate timing. A third wave of Covid-19 emerged in the city in July, just weeks before the festival was scheduled to take place, forcing Hong Kong...

Tim Conway, the versatile comedian best known for his work on The Carol Burnett Show, died Tuesday in Los Angeles, Variety reports. He was 85.
A representative for Conway said he died from complications from a long illness, including hydrocephalus, or water on the brain.
Conway was a prolific performer and writer throughout his career, though by his own admission, he always preferred being a supporting player rather than a star. “I don’t feature myself as being the head man,” he said in a 2004 interview (via NPR). “I would much...

As a huge fan of Ryan Gosling and Shane Black’s underrated Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I had a pretty good feeling that The Nice Guys was right up my alley. So, perhaps it wasn’t a shock that I loved this movie. Still, it was an absolute pleasure to watch Black again ace the buddy cop genre. As much fun as anything I’ve seen this year, it’s an absolute hoot. Opening this week after a successful debut at the Cannes Film Festival, it really should be a big hit, provided audiences are actually aware of its existence and subsequent quality. My fingers are crossed, but I’ll do my part here to sell you on it too. It’s one of 2016’s best to date. The film is an action comedy film noir, if that makes sense. Set in the late 1970’s, it follows two private investigators...

V/H/S 2
USA, 2013
Directed by Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Eduardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans, and Jason Eisener
The horror anthology V/H/S deserves credit for figuring out a good way to present mediocre found-footage ideas. When watching a bad found-footage horror film the main problem is that it goes on too long and can’t keep its gimmick fresh, but if many of those films were cut to short-film length, their shortcomings would be well camouflaged. So it goes with the sequel V/H/S 2: there are some good ideas, and some awful ones, and the best thing that can be said about the bad ideas is that they don’t hang around.
Like its predecessor, V/H/S 2 is shaped around a framing story. This time, the framing story involves two private investigators searching for a missing person. Turns out this particular...

The Private Eyes (Original Release Date: 10 April 1981)
Nostalgia bulletproofs some movies to criticism. That's how it is for me, at least. I apologize in advance for the inevitably positive review I will be writing for Legend of the Lone Ranger in May. It is roundly hated by casual moviegoers and Lone Ranger fans alike, and there is little chance of your liking it if you weren't indoctrinated into liking it as a child.
Legend of the Lone Ranger was one of my most frequent babysitters growing up, and I developed a good deal of affection for it. Another sitter was The Private Eyes, though like the sitter who continues to baby talk at you when you feel you’ve outgrown baby talk, The Private Eyes has dimmed in my estimation with time. That old affection is hard to access, even if watching it does produce constant flutters of recognition and memories from childhood.

Motion pictures set inside sprawling, decaying, abandoned old houses go a long way with me, even if the film in question completely wastes its atmospheric location by fumbling the script. This is probably due in part to being exposed to “The House of Long Shadows”, “Burnt Offerings”, and The Don Knotts/Tim Conway classic “The Private Eyes” at a very young age. And while the cheesy electronic music sprinkled throughout the trailer for Helene Angel’s upcoming French horror outing “Forbidden House” betrays the clip’s inherent creepiness, I’m still curious to see how Angel utilizes the picture’s crumbling old set piece. Visually speaking, the film certainly has potential. Before continuing, a brief synopsis courtesy of Buzzes Cafe: Claire and Benedict arrive in the country to sell the family home in which Claire’s brother recently committed suicide. Benedict wants to start work as soon as possible to sell at the best price,...
