David Soul, who starred alongside Paul Michael Glaser on the 1970s’ ABC buddy cop show Starsky and Hutch and had a No. 1 hit with the song “Don’t Give Up on Us,” has died. He was 80.
Soul died Thursday after “a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family,” his wife, Helen Snell, said in a statement.
“He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend,” she said. “His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched.”
Soul also appeared for two seasons on the 1968-70 ABC show Here Come the Brides, played one of the corrupt young motorcycle cops brought down by Clint Eastwood’s Harry Callahan in the thriller Magnum Force (1973) and stood out as a terrified vampire hunter in the 1979 Stephen King CBS miniseries Salem’s Lot.

Let's get something clear, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" has the perfect number of endings, and they are what makes this such an incredible and inimitable trilogy.
There are about 27 minutes of film between the moment the ring goes back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. This includes Frodo and Sam being rescued by eagles. A reunion with the fellowship. The coronation of Aragorn. The return to The Shire. And finally, Frodo sailing off into the West with the elves.
A lesser movie would just end with the reunion and tell all the rest via text on the screen. A slightly better movie would choose to end with The Coronation, as everyone in Minas Tirith kneels before the hobbits, the real heroes. After all, that is the end of the story. The evil has been defeated, and the titular king has returned. But...

Dog. Man’s best friend, and also his greatest muse.
Since the beginning of film history, humans have found a way to put a puppies and canines on screen. One of the very first British movies was the 1905 silent short “Rescued by Rover,” about a Collie leading her master to their kidnapped baby. That film launched the career of Blair, the first canine onscreen actor, and defined how dogs would be depicted in cinema for centuries: loyal, smart, resourceful, and lovable.
From there, canine actors began appearing at a steady clip throughout film history. They appeared in comedies like Charlie Chaplin’s “A Dog’s Life” and teary dramas like “Old Yeller.” And kid-friendly companies like Disney churned out film after film centering dogs, like “Homeward Bound” and the “Air Bud” franchise. The dog movie is maybe not the most well-respected genre in the history of film, but it’s hard...

From Lassie and Rin Tin Tin to 101 Dalmatians, Old Yeller, My Dog Skip, Homeward Bound, A Dog’s Purpose and on and on, the canine genre has been a staple of Hollywood movies for decades. I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone got the idea to make a balls-out, foul-mouthed, R-rated subversion of it all, and finally its time has come with the irresistible Strays, a film definitely not designed as a family movie or for kids — though I would bet, despite the language and nonstop dick jokes, they would love it anyway.
Credit Universal Pictures for not only seeing the potential in a Cocaine Bear this year, but now also with the four-pack of lovable down and dirty dogs who hump everything in sight and use four-letter words in just about every conversation. Strays is as raunchy as Ted or anything Seth Rogen ever thought of,...

It’s been said, probably, that every movie would be even better with wiener jokes. I don’t think this was said by very mature individuals, nor do I think they were sober when they said it, but I’m pretty sure it’s been said at least once or twice. Probably by college students binge-watching “South Park” and huffing Cheeto dust.
In any case, those amateur philosophers are probably the target audience for “Strays,” a talking animal movie in the illustrious vein of “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and the Owen Wilson version of “Marmaduke.” But although the majority of films where live-action animals talk with the assistance of flappy-mouthed CGI are made for children — who theoretically are enchanted by such things — “Strays” is full of profanity, jokes about sex and violence, and pervasive themes about abusive relationships.
And while it’s easy to imagine a cranky old critic waving his cane around,...

Legally, we cannot say that Josh Greenbaum’s “Strays” is meant for children. The film, despite its dog-centric storyline, is rated R, and frequently shows dogs humping and getting high, and probably will scare kids into thinking Will Forte’s demonic dog-hating Doug is the epitome of the inevitable horrors of adulthood.
Oddly, “Strays” will likely play best to an adolescent audience, because its humor is geared firmly toward the 13-year-old demographic. But that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. To the contrary, “Strays” plays like a slow morphine drip into an oblivion in which Jamie Foxx’s voiceover acting as an adorably emotive Boston terrier named Bug is Oscar-worthy and Will Ferrell’s signature “who, me?” tone (perfected in “Elf”) is on full display as adorable mutt Reggie, a pet who unwittingly escapes a toxic relationship with aforementioned loser Doug. Just let it wash over you.

As summer comes to an end, Barbie has reigned the box office for nearly a month so far. While Oppenheimer had more working against it, for a film of its nature, it has been a smashing success and a formidable companion. The movies that have tried to follow in the wake of Barbenheimer have not been so lucky — with horror-leaning films, Haunted Mansion, Meg 2: The Trench, and The Last Voyage of Demeter opening premature to Halloween, leaving carcasses in a different manner. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, on the other hand, is enjoying a bit of success while the numbers aren’t quite stacking up against Barbenheimer. And just like in the toy aisle, it is providing as an alternative to Barbie.

Will Ferrell brought out an adorable fluffy friend named Sophie to hawk his very R-rated new comedy, “Strays,” at CinemaCon on Wednesday. The comic actor and the border terrier teamed up to portray Reggie, a dog who is abandoned by his deadbeat owner (Will Forte). But Ferrell made it clear who has top billing.
“My career is going to go on for a long time, but this is the peak for you,” Ferrell said, as the camera operator at the cavernous Colosseum kept cutting back to Sophie’s soulful eyes. If there’s a “Strays 3,” Ferrell joked, the 8-year-old Sophie would need to be recast. “That’s an eternity in dog years…and that’s not even Hollywood years,” he said.
Ferrell also joked that he did the voice work for his canine counterpart while Sophie “made sure that Reggie looked like a real dog, which she is.” He added...

The quiet Beatle didn’t like performing much. After touring the world throughout Beatlemania, George had had enough. However, he loved it when he got to play with a band or with his friends. Here is a list of George Harrison‘s best on-stage collaborations.
George Harrison and Ringo Starr | Dave Hogan/Getty Images Delaney and Bonnie/Eric Clapton
In 1969, George watched Eric Clapton and husband and wife duo Delaney and Bonnie perform in Bristol. The act invited George to join the tour, and he agreed. He played the next night. It was his first stage performance since The Beatles’ final concert in 1966. According to Beatles Bible, George appeared for five of the tour’s six dates, playing two shows each night.
George told Timothy White at Musician Magazine that performing with the duo influenced his slide guitar work, which he’d just begun to play. Delaney gave George a...

Michael J. Fox is a name synonymous with cinema now and forever. Even if he had only ever starred in "Back to the Future," Marty McFly would etch his name into movie history without question. Yet, for a big stretch in the '90s, he was about as big as stars get. Unfortunately, due to health issues related to Parkinson's, Fox has largely been away from the limelight for some time. That changes next month as Apple TV+ is bringing us "Still: A Michael J Fox Movie," a documentary about his meteoric rise to fame as well as his experiences dealing with his disease.
I was fortunate enough to see the film at SXSW this year and the best thing about it is how accurate that title is. This really is a Michael J. Fox movie, one that plays more like a biopic with a documentary component. Bring the tissues,...

They say "Never work with children or animals" – but director Josh Greenbaum crab and seagulls in the sand for dogs. Lots of dogs. Specifically, strays who are on a mission to, er, bite a guy's dick off.
As its R-rated trailer proves, Strays isn't exactly your standard talking dog movie. And that gave Greenbaum paws upon first receiving the script. “I was going into reading that with a little trepidation,” says Greenbaum. “I felt like I knew what all the jokes were gonna be.” But it turns out he was barking up the wrong tree, because Dan Perrault's (American Vandal) script wasn't what he expected at all. “I was really pleasantly surprised to see that it was not a spoof. It really functioned on its own, even though it had a couple of moments where we pay comedic homage to the great talking dog films of our youth.”

The Peabody award-winning The Leftovers concludes on Sunday, June 4 and through its three seasons, the show has become just as acclaimed for its music as its incredible story, writing and acting.
While the HBO series is no stranger to change (season one's opening titles used an original piece by composer Max Richter, and season two used Iris DeMent's "Let the Mystery Be"), season three has gone even further, adapting the theme song to each episode. "[It was showrunner] Damon Lindelof's decision," music supervisor Liza Richardson tells Et by phone, adding that the music choices on the series vary between her and Lindelof's allegiance to certain artists, love of repetition and the desire to "surprise."

No one who has watched even 30 seconds of “The Leftovers” would tell you it’s a cheery show. HBO’s ambitious, poignant, and periodically gut-wrenching drama often chases one devastating moment with another, occasionally pausing to give the viewer a brief, teary respite — if we’re lucky.

From Nora’s awkwardly endearing comebacks (“Fuck your daughter!”) to Kevin’s attempts at family bonding to a giant blow-up doll of Gary Busey, the laughs are there, if you can smile through the pain.

Paul Simon remembers Carrie Fisher fondly.
After the singer learned that the Star Wars actress had died at age 60 on Tuesday after going into cardiac arrest days prior, he took to Twitter to pay tribute to his ex-wife. "Yesterday was a horrible day," he wrote on Wednesday morning. "Carrie was a special, wonderful girl. It's too soon."
Fisher and Simon had an on-again, off-again relationship for over a decade and got married in 1984, only to divorce that very same year. In the 75-year-old musician's biography, Homeward Bound: The Life of Paul Simon, author Peter Ames Carlin writes that their relationship came to an end after a psychedelic trip in the Amazon.

Heartrending a cappella covers are nothing new for Peter Hollens’ YouTube channel, which, at 1.4 million subscribers strong, features the 36-year-old Oregon native belting out full-scale productions with all sounds derived by human voices. But Hollens, who recently launched an ongoing Patreon campaign to help up the production quality and consistency of his releases, calls his latest video one of the most special yet.
The video, a cover of the folk song Homeward Bound featuring more than 300 high school choir students, was created in loving memory of a young member of the choir, Korol, who had recently passed away. Hollens explains in a coda to the video that he asked his friend, the choral director Megan Perdue, if her students might be interested in appearing in the video with him -- only to discover that Homeward Bound happened to be Korol’s favorite song.

Here's some great news for the people who basically copy and paste their sentiment about Hollywood being out of original ideas into every site's comment section: Disney is actually developing a live-action/CG hybrid that's a completely original idea not based on any of its existing intellectual property. It's called Wild City, and THR reports that the idea comes from James Ponsoldt, the guy behind solid indie movies like The Spectacular Now, Smashed, and The End of The Tour (he also directed some of Aziz Ansari's excellent Netflix show Master of None).
Not much is known about the movie, but we do know that the story "explores the adventures of Los Angeles' wild animals" and is a fully original concept originated by Ponsoldt, who will write, produce, and direct this film for the studio. I'm getting a Zootopia/Homeward Bound kind of vibe from that description, but Ponsoldt is...

‘The Leftovers’: An Oral History of the Finale’s Karaoke Scene, from Damon Lindelof & Justin Theroux
“One of the things I’m most proud of is the sequence with Kevin Garvey singing “Homeward Bound.” — Mimi Leder
“The karaoke scene was probably the most deeply uncomfortable scene I had to shoot.” — Justin Theroux
“If you try to explain to someone, ‘Here’s what happened in the finale of “The Leftovers,”‘ you sound insane.” — Damon Lindelof
[Spoilers for “The Leftovers” Season 2 are below.]
The second season of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s magnificent exploration of belief, faith and family included its fair share of bold moments. Its opening sequence tracked a cave woman giving birth in rural Texas. Its first episode barely featured its main stars, shifting instead to a whole new family in a brand new location. And then came “International Assassin,” the season’s eighth episode that tracked Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) into the afterlife; an afterlife set in a hotel where he donned a suit, became an assassin and had to...

The Leftovers, Season 2, Episode 10: “I Live Here Now”
Written by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta
Directed by Mimi Leder
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on HBO
“I don’t understand what’s happening.”
I’m not just saying this because there’s a chance it might be its actual last episode: “I Live Here Now” is the ultimate episode of The Leftovers. That does not mean it’s necessarily its best, or its most beautifully executed, but it is most certainly the one that most artfully contains everything the series to date has tried to be about. It’s all here: the shape-shifting omnipresence of emotional trauma, the urge to explain away the uncanny, the almost maddening pull of familial ties, and the sometimes-amusing reactions that unexpectedly crop up in the bizarre intersections between those forces.
It starts at the beginning. Well, not the real beginning – that would be the prologue of “Axis Mundi.

A review of tonight's season finale of "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I spin the karaoke wheel... "Family is everything." -Meg "I don't understand what's happening." -John "Me neither." -Kevin "God, I hope this is not the last episode of this show." -My notes as the opening credits played I had another long conversation with Damon Lindelof about the finale, and as a bookend to the one we had before the season. Lindelof was understandably not interested in explaining many aspects of the finale, or the season, preferring to, like Iris DeMent, just let the mystery be. I suggested that certain developments in these final episodes — say, Kevin's ability to survive a near point-blank gunshot wound and not bleed out during that time he was lying on the floor of the animal quarantine; or, before that, his ability to survive not only drinking Virgil's poison (or whatever...

HBO's "The Leftovers" just concluded an incredible second season. (Here's my review of the finale.) As a bookend to the long and candid conversation we had two months ago, I spoke with the series' co-creator Damon Lindelof about many of the big decisions going into the finale, about all the hard work and tough choices required for a season this good, and his thoughts about the show's precarious future, coming up just as soon as a temple closes on Christmas... Let's start with a meta question: why are we doing this interview? A year ago, you didn't want to do any post-mortems. You wanted to let the show speak for itself. You did a bunch at the start of this season, you talked to Mo Ryan last week, and are doing a few like this for the finale. Why did you decide to be a little bit more out there this year?...

One doesn’t necessarily think of San Francisco as a site of cinematic innovation, but there’s a history that’s hard to argue against. But it’s more than Homeward Bound II. The city that once housed Muybridge would later serve as a hub of camaraderie, creativity, and inspiration among the form’s biggest figures — all in all, a spot that could stand alongside Paris and Hollywood in significance. This lineage was explored in Gary Leva‘s 2007 documentary entitled Fog City Mavericks, which managed to snag the likes of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Francis Ford and Sofia Coppola, Clint Eastwood, John Lasseter, Brad Bird, and more. Some films are hard to classify, they do not want to be stuck in just one genre, and they just want to tell a story. White God is a story that could be described as Homeward Bound with teeth or even The Birds with dogs. In truth, it is a film that shows you the story, and then lets you take from it what you will.
