Any list of the greatest foreign directors currently working today has to include Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. The directors first rose to prominence in the mid 1990s with efforts like “The Promise” and “Rosetta,” and they’ve continued to excel in the 21st century with titles such as “The Kid With A Bike” and “Two Days One Night,” which earned Marion Cotillard a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

A 94-year-old North Dakota man comes across a late friend's diary and sits at a typewriter "to put down a good yarn about those old times." John Hanson and Rob Nilsson's 1978 treasure Northern Lights—screening at Film Forum in a newly restored 35mm print—presents the cheerful fellow, Henry Martinson (Hanson's real-life grandfather, playing himself), as a frame around a hard past. Through him, the film enters 1915-set flashbacks involving a small community of Norwegian farmers and first-generation descendants (all photographed by Judy Irola in harsh, sharp black-and-white) struggling to survive fierce winters and crueler bosses and banks. Henry's friend, the young farmer Ray Sorenson (played by Robert Behling), takes focus as his voiceover narrates how he was drawn in...

With 2010 only a week over, it already feels like best-of and top-ten lists have been pouring in for months, and we’re already tired of them: the ranking, the exclusions (and inclusions), the rules and the qualifiers. Some people got to see films at festivals, others only catch movies on video; and the ability for us, or any publication, to come up with a system to fairly determine who saw what when and what they thought was the best seems an impossible feat. That doesn’t stop most people from doing it, but we liked the fantasy double features we did last year and for our 3rd Writers Poll we thought we'd do it again.
I asked our contributors to pick a single new film they saw in 2010—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they saw in 2010 to create a unique double feature.

Director Rob Nilsson made Stroke, an intriguing, character-driven story in 2000. Stroke is a curious blending and blurring of the documentary and the fictional narrative, featuring Ron Perlam among the various actors that appear in this collaborative experiment. For those familiar with the work of independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Night On Earth, Coffee And Cigarettes), this film should be a welcome experience.
Rob Nilsson has been making truly independent films since Northern Lights, his first film from 1978, which won the Camera d’Or at Cannes. Nilsson’s 1987 film Heat And Sunlight also earned him the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. I encourage you to take this rare opportunity to attend the screening of Stroke with director Rob Nilsson, and be sure to see his new film Imbued, which is also playing the Saint Louis International Film Festival.

In the past twenty-four hours a few stories have broken that were either debunked, shown to be partially wrong, or are a bit optimistic. Brendon quickly jumped on top of Universal's denial of alternate cuts of The Wolfman, but here are a couple other items to be critical of. Yesterday, there was news that Taylor Lautner would co-star with Tom Cruise in Northern Lights, which sounded sort of like Top Gun, Jr. Now EW reports that Cruise isn't part of the package, and never was. And, in fact, Nikki Finke (who, like it or not, usually has good info) got the logline wrong, too. Hers was out of date. Here's the current one, via Skydance, the production company: Set against the backdrop of extreme flying, Northern Lights follows four young pilots as they compete against the world’s best. A story of teamwork, sacrifice, loss, and victory, these young aviators...

Dustin has already covered the news this question is spawned from, about Taylor Lautner co-starring as Tom Cruise's son in something suspiciously akin to a Top Gun sequel, so let's get down to the brass tax tacks. Does Taylor Lautner have any right to be crowned the highest paid teenaged actor in Hollywood?
Let's not forget that just over a year ago the People's Choice nominee wasn't even considered good enough to reprise his role in the talent-not-required Twilight franchise. Now he's getting $7.5 million for Northern Lights. That's more than a million bucks per ab -- though when I took a quick, non-pervy glance, it looked like the dude has more than six in his pack. Is that possible? I'm a flabby movie blogger and know nothing of things like "muscles." Neither does Nikki Finke apparently; she thinks Lautner has 7.5 abs (see below).

Major props to our friends over at First Showing for clearing this up with the quickness. Earlier today, we (along with everyone else in the movie blog-o-sphere) reported that Taylor Lautner was set to co-star with Tom Cruise in the new flick Northern Lights. First reports from various outlets billed the flick as a “Tom Cruise vehicle” that would see Lautner starring as the son of a billionaire (presumably, Cruise). Lautner’s character is a talented aerobatics pilot, a lifestyle his rich dad doesn’t agree with.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the New Moon beefcake will be earning $7.5 million for his next project, the Tom Cruise-starring Northern Lights. It's funny what 1 hit film and a six pack of abs can do for you. Actor Taylor Launter has gone from a virtual "who?", to sought after Hollywood commodity. Lautner's name has popped up on several projects in recent weeks, but probably none bigger than this.
It's being reported that Lautner has just signed on to appear with Tom Cruise in the new film "Northern Lights".
The story seems to be about: “a gifted, young, aerobatics pilot who faces off with his controlling, billionaire father and falls in love with a gifted, female pilot.” I can only assume that Cruise will play the controlling father in the pic.
Lautner's profile isn't the only thing of his that has increased in recent months. Apparently so have his salary demands. Lautner will reportedly make $7.5 million dollars for his role in the film. Go wolf boy go.

Philip Pullman has admitted that he is "disappointed" over claims that further movie adaptations of the His Dark Materials trilogy were scrapped due to pressure from the Catholic Church. The author Philip Pullman has spoken of his disappointment over the failure of Hollywood to complete the film trilogy of his series of fantasy novels, His Dark Materials.
The actor Sam Elliott, who starred in the 2007 adaptation of the first novel, Northern Lights (the film was called The Golden Compass), said earlier this week that books two and three were not being filmed due to a successful campaign by America's religious right. On March 16, the Stripes will release deluxe box set of goodies including a DVD of the concert film Under Great White Northern Lights, a DVD of the band’s 10th anniversary show, a 16-track live album, a live 7", a 208-page book and an actual lock of Jack White’s hair. All true! Except for that last one....

Sam Elliot has claimed that pressure from the Catholic Church was the reason for New Line opting to axe the two sequels for The Golden Compass. The actor played aeronaut Lee Scoresby in the adaptation of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights, the first part in the author's His Dark Materials trilogy. On its release in 2007, the movie was boycotted by The Catholic League For Religious and Civil Rights. Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly also attacked the film and reportedly dubbed it a "war on Christmas". Elliot told the Evening Standard: "The Catholic Church happened to The Golden Compass, as far as I'm concerned. "It did incredible at the box office, taking $$380million (£235 million). Incredible. It took $$85million in the States. The Catholic Church... lambasted them, and I think it scared New Line (more)...

After seeing (and loving) rock doc It Might Get Loud earlier this year, I can assure you that Jack White is an interesting documentary subject, but when you combine Jack with Meg and one crazy concert tour, “interesting” doesn’t do the concept justice. Enter Under Great White Northern Lights, a documentary about the White Stripes’ wild and wonderful Canadian tour back in 2007.

Chuck Russell has been attached to a lot of movies since “The Scorpion King” in 2002, but as far as I know he hasn’t finished or actually come through with any of them. (What’s up with “Northern Lights”, Chuckie?) The latest project to strike his fancy is a $70 million dollar retelling of the classic “Arabian Nights” tale, in which Russell co-wrote the script and is attached to direct in the 3D format. Russell’s version of “Arabian Nights” will follow a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with fellow good guys Sinbad, Aladdin, and his genie to rescue the comely Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers. Much CG carpet-riding and sword fights ensue. The boys at Inferno Entertainment will foot the bill. They have “The Experiment” with Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker coming up, and the action-thriller “The Killer Elite” with Jason Statham on tap.

Chris De Salvo and Morrow McLaughlin battle it out in He Said/She Said … 9
De Salvo’s scorecard review of 9 (3/10)
McLaughlin’s scorecard review of 9 (9/10)
Excerpt from He Said/She Said … 9
The animated film 9 isn’t directed by Tim Burton, though he did produce. Shane Acker is behind the PG-13 picture with voice talent Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, John C. Reilly, Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau and Crispin Glover.
It tells the tale of 9 coming to life to find himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone. by chance he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam Earth intent on their extinction.
As always, we recommend that you see the film before reading the He Said/She Said … everything, including plot spoilers and the ending, is fair game to talk about hear. You’ve been warned.
She Said
Nine was phenomenal.

The White Stripes have unveiled a documentary titled The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights at the Toronto International Film Festival. Speaking at a press conference for its launch, frontman Jack White said that the band were inspired by the "gigantic frontier" alongside their childhood home in Detroit. White said: "I'm not too big of a reality TV show fan or peek-behind-the-curtains fan, especially in this day and age. "There's so much of that going on and there's so little mystery about (more)...

Fangoria Musick just heard from Insane Clown Posse (Icp) with the news that their newest album, Bang! Pow! Boom!, debuted at No. 4 on Billboard Top 200, with 50,000 records sold during its release week. Additionally, the record debuted at No. 1 on the Independent Chart. Read our recent interview with Violent J right here.
To date, Bang! Pow! Boom! is Icp's best selling album upon release, which also makes it Psychopathic Records' best selling album during its week of release. This album is Icp's second album to debut at No. 4 on the Billboard Charts, and second album to debut at No. 1 on the Independent Chart. Collectively, Icp's catalog has sold over 7 million records worldwide. These figures, combined with the latest Bang! Pow! Boom! numbers are quite impressive for any band. However, what is even more remarkable is that Icp has achieved notable success without any major radio and television airplay.
It is no surprise that Bang!
