‘Survival of the Dead’ Lands a Release Date

21 December 2009 6:57 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

As much flack as George A. Romero got for his poorly received Diary of the Dead, he’s still one of the most talented and singular voices in the business. His living dead flicks have always been his excuse to talk about current social issues that bother him, and he does so with style, which is why I can’t wait for his next: Survival of the Dead.

Luckily for us, Magnet Releasing has picked up Survival and scheduled it for a Spring release date — and a month earlier on video on demand networks.

From what I’ve heard about Survival of the Dead, Romero has grounded his latest zombie feature in a Western setting, which seems pretty nifty. Variety has a pretty good breakdown of plot description:

“Two powerful families maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Two

16 December 2009 3:18 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

Martyn’s Top Ten Vampire Films

11 November 2009 7:43 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

The vampire has been a key figure in folklore, literature, television and cinema. Its popularity, at present, has never been so high. It is easy to see the appeal: immortality and sex. Since death is the fate that awaits us all, a creature that we invent and imbue with an indeterminate lifespan, captivates the collective imagination like no other. Due to sexual liberalism and relaxed censorship of the 1960s, the erotic sensibilities inherent in the mythology were allowed to fruition in cinema. What once was implied, could now be shown in all its sexy glory (see the films of Jean Rollin). Gothic horror and romanticism may be the classic home of the vampire, but in cinema, they have found a new place to spread wider-reaching nightmares.

In recent times, the everlasting monster has been tamed. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga saw them turn into something akin to vegetarians and teen heart-throbs, »

Sweatshop to Show as Part of Nychff

7 November 2009 8:17 AM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

A veritable feast for fans of horror and dark fantasy, this month's New York City Horror Film Festival will host more than 50 films and shorts at the Tribeca Cinemas.  The festival boasts works from F. W. Murnau and William Lustig, as well as the new film Sweatshop.  Our readers should take particular interest in Sweatshop, as two of the men behind it are Icons friends Ted Geoghegan as writer, and America's Baddest Kid John Torrani in a producer role.  Sweatshop shows on November 20, and I'll be there to cover the event for Icons.

Come out and show your support for Sweatshop and other horror films at the Nychff, a festival dedicated exclusively to horror lovers.

Read the official press release below, which includes contact information for the Tribeca:

Bill Lustig to be Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

6 November 2009 3:05 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The Nychff is taking place this November in the Big Apple, and not only are they showcasing a solid horror line-up, they're also presenting a lifetime achievement award to one of our own.

The festival’s 2009 feature film presentations are:

Must Love Death (Feature / Horror / Comedy) / Directed by Andreas Schaap

Disappointed by love and suicidal, Norman arranges to meet a group of like-minded people. But when he arrives at the meeting, the alleged suicides go very wrong, and hilarity and blood start to flow freely.

Sweatshop (Feature / Horror) / Directed by Stacy Davidson

A group of rave promoters decide to throw a party in an enormous vacant factory... But when the oversexed friends throw back a few drinks and begin setting up, they soon realize a beastly all-seeing presence resides in this enormous place, and it drags a mammoth, inhuman weapon that serves only one purpose: to end the lives of anyone who trespasses here. »

Scream 2009 Recap: Reign of the Vampires and Space Crews

19 October 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

True to its name, the Scream Awards is an award show where the winners are decided by the biggest scream, like talent shows of olden days, before text messaging and toll-free numbers were invented. In this case, Scream winners are decided by internet votes. It's not surprising to then see current trend-grabbing vampires dominate the show; but the awards, it seemed, are secondary. The highlights of the night are all the honorary awards, celebrating the legends of their own mediums.

It was a little disconcerting to notice that the award winners were all telegraphed by the adoring cheers of the audience, too. The more enthusiastic the cheers, the likelier for that person to win. Vampires are definitely in this year, with notable appearances/wins for Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire's Assistant and Let the Right One In.

The most telling part of the award show being entertainment first-recognition second is »

18 October 2009 1:22 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Horror fans love this time of the year. For those of us not living in La, there's the chill in the air, the colorful leaves, pumpkins everywhere, dead cornfields to explore … if you dare. So, in honor of Our official holiday, I have come up with a list of books and some movies every horror fan should at least take a look at, if not outright add to your book or DVD library.

Without further ado (and in no particular order):

Fantastic Fest 09: Another review of Survival Of The Dead

Year: 2009

Directors: George A. Romero

Writers: George A. Romero

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: rochefort

Rating: 3 out of 10

"Survival of the Dead", George A. Romero's sixth entry in the ongoing zombie mythology he created with "Night of the Living Dead", is upon us. In "Diary of the Dead", George reset the timeline back to the initial days of the zombie outbreak, and you may remember a key scene in which the main characters were robbed by a group of Awol soldiers. "Survival" follows those soldiers as they head to an island where two long-feuding families are dealing with the zombie plague in their own unique way. One group believes we should kill 'em all, but the other side elects to chain up their undead kin and leave them be until somebody comes up with a cure. The zombies in each of Romero's movies have always been just the »

The Crazies Poster is Remarkably Sane

28 September 2009 6:41 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

George Romero’s got two categories, two modes of operating: the guy makes masterpieces and extremely flawed films with great ideas. The Crazies (one of the director’s lesser known works that was mashed together with Day of the Dead by Danny Boyle to create 28 Days Later) belongs in the latter category alongside Knightriders and Martin.

The central concept at work, however — biological infection leading people to madness — is one large enough to warrant a reworking by director Breck Eisner (Sahara) and screenwriter Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror remake). Scheduled for release in February, 2010 — and barely publicized thus far — the new Crazies will star Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.

Hopefully we’ll see a trailer soon that shows a little more imagination than this poster, which is neither crazy nor indicative of how close Eisner/Kosar are sticking to Romero’s original work.

Vampire-con '09: Midnight Son

16 August 2009 6:05 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After the double-header of Count Yorga and Lost Boys at this weekend's 1st Annual Vampire-Con, filmmaker Scott Leberecht  unveiled his low budget horror film, Midnight Son, at a midnight screening.  Despite a vampire protagonist, it is unrelated to the Marvel Comic, Midnight Sons.

The story of a security guard who may be turning into a vampire, it's atmospheric and the biggest names in the cast are character actors Tracey Walter and Larry Cedar. One can see elements of George Romero's Martin, Vampire's Kiss and Abel Ferrara's The Addiction. Leberecht  was charmingly blunt. "I wanted to do the cheapest movie I could come up with--scary and supernatural.  I didn't have any love for vampires, it just felt right." These vampires don't twinkle in the daylight--they burn.  Sometimes the budget shows too much (Larry Cedar appears to be the only detective in a stationhouse),. but the ideas are interesting and »

[Movie Review] Thirst

30 July 2009 9:52 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Park Chan-wook didn't set out to make a vampire film.

At least, that's what he told me when we spoke here in San Francisco, a week before Thirst opens. You can tell from watching the film that, despite it being a movie about a vampire, it is not a horror film, nor is it even a movie aboutvampirism.

What the film is can be summed up by its title. As with his popular Vengeance trilogy, including the international hit Oldboy, Park puts the theme front and center. It's a movie about thirst, a base desire present in all of us, fang or no fang; though I should note that the vampires in this film do not have fangs. They draw blood using tools, something carried over from George Romero's Martin, a movie Park claims to be his favorite vampire flick. It is mine, as well, and it's high compliment »
