Basement Jack

Karen Cook was your average high school student... until the night evil invaded her life. She would soon be known as the lone survivor of a seven-day killing spree perpetrated by a seventeen year old boy the world would come to call "Basement Jack". For the next eleven years, Karen Cook lived in fear that one day Basement Jack would be released. Then, a court hearing in 2006 found that Jack Riley had not received a »

MGM Studios Officially For Sale

16 November 2009 6:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

MGM Studios' financial troubles will soon be coming to a sad end. Back in September, it was reported that MGM was in such poor shape that they might be forced to auction off their assets, including James Bond and The Hobbit. That day has come to pass. Variety reports that MGM Studios is officially on the auction block.

MGM has been given a month of breathing space from their interest payments, time they plan on using to begin "a process to explore various strategic alternatives including operating as a standalone entity, forming strategic partnerships and evaluating a potential sale of the company."

But all hopes of survival may rest on what they sell off from their glorious history, including a library of 4,000 titles, the logo, the United Artists company, James Bond, and half ownership in The Hobbit. Time Warner, News Corp, and Lionsgate are said to be interested in all of the above. »

12 November 2009 6:38 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Actor Hal Holbrook has had a long and distinguished career. Best known for his legendary role as the Watergate conspiracy lynchpin Deep Throat in All the President's Men, the actor was introduced to an all new audience in 2007 when he was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Sean Penn's Into the Wild. A veteran of over one-hundred and twenty film and television projects, the actor has appeared in such movies as John Carpenter's The Fog, Capricorn One, The Star Chamber, Wall Street, Fletch Lives and The Firm, not to mention countless performances on popular television programs like Evening Shade, The West Wing and The Sopranos. It's safe to say that at age eighty-four, Holbrook shows no signs of slowing down as he is currently getting rave reviews for his performance as a Tennessee farm owner dealing with being forced off his farm and into a retirement home in That Evening Sun, »

Shoot ‘Em Up Director Signs on for Outland Remake

19 August 2009 9:01 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Yet another remake is being prepped for ignition this week as Warner Brothers and Hollywood Gang have announced their intention to put together an updated version of the 1981 sci-fi film Outland starring Sean Connery. The original, which was directed by Peter Hyams (Capricorn One, Timecop), followed a Federal Marshal on a mining colony on one of Jupiter's moons, who uncovers a dangerous corporate conspiracy. Described as a "space western" of sorts, it has often been compared to High Noon. The remake will be helmed by Michael Davis, who recently did the over-the-top action/comedy Shoot 'Em Up, and written by newcomer Chad St. John (The Days Before). Although I haven't seen the original, somehow Davis doesn't seem like the right guy for the job. Hopefully he won't get too carried away with the action sequences. Duncan Jones recently cited [1] Outland as an inspiration for his own debut film Moon... maybe »

Monday Night Poll: Favorite Moon Movies?

20 July 2009 8:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Sitting next to my father in a crowded station wagon on the evening of July 20, 1969, I listened to the radio as we drove and stared up into the heavens. Man had landed on the moon, and soon we would all be exploring the universe, just like they did on Forbidden Planet and Star Trek. Things haven't quite worked out that way, so, instead, I've turned to the movies to fulfill my deep space fantasies.

George Melies made the very first sci-fi flick in 1902, A Trip to the Moon, which lasted all of 14 minutes. Interest picked up in the post WWII-era with George Pal's production of Destination Moon; the 1950s were a golden age for science fiction films. Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey put the moon in a whole new light. After Neil Armstrong set his foot down 40 years ago, real life footage replaced all the fictional creations. »

Pop Culture Takes On The Apollo Moon Landing Hoax

20 July 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

An astronaut in a giant white suit stands next to an American flag on the moon’s surface: one of America’s -- and MTV's -- most iconic images. Photos and footage of Neil Armstrong’s first walk on the moon 40 years ago changed the way people all around the world looked at space. It also sparked a heated debate over whether the moon landing was staged or not, one that continues to leak through in pop culture even today.

It didn’t take long after the 1969 landing for doubters to start stepping out. In fact, a public opinion poll conducted by the Gallup organization once showed that more than 6% of Americans believed the landing to be an elaborate government hoax.

Part of that disbelief was of course fueled by a general feeling that something as amazing as a man walking on the moon was the stuff of science fiction. »

Capricorn One - great sci-fi moments number six

20 June 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | Scifi Love | See recent Scifi Love news »

Capricorn One is a film that I don't own on DVD, but if I happen across it on TV I find it impossible not to watch.

Thrilling conspiracy theory nuts everywhere, its premise has a team of astronauts forced to take part in a fake Mission to Mars by threats against their families (one of the astronauts was Oj Simpson, so he would have taken some real convincing), as Nasa budget cuts mean their ship's life support would not keep them alive.

They film pretend broadcasts from a set on an isolated military base, but when the spaceship burns up on the way back home just as they were on their way to meet it, they realise they have to fight for their lives and try to reach civilisation, at the same time as journalist Elliot Gould tries to expose the truth.

Directors I Like: Peter Hyams

29 March 2009 5:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

So a few months ago I'm enjoying a stupid cigarette outside of my Park City (Sundance, woo) hotel, and I see my old friend Chris Hyams walking my way. Chris is one of the founders and wizards behind Bside.com, an outfit that does everything from mega-nifty festival schedules to full-bore film distribution. So because I am loud (and also a pathetic movie nerd), I say "Hey Chris! Wouldn't it be cool if your Dad was Peter Hyams?"

Chris smiled and said "It sure would be. And he is my dad!" After about four minutes of Chris trying to convince me he was telling the truth, we quickly got rambling about the awesomeness of Outland, which is a film his dad made way back in 1981, and is still the finest "High Noon in space" movie that Sean Connery ever starred in. During my conversation with Chris, my brain kept screaming "Don't mention The Musketeer! »
