Despite being one of 2023’s biggest hits, Baldur’s Gate 3 will be Larian Studios’ last Dungeons & Dragons game. Its rights holder has talked about the parting of ways.
In more ways than one, fantasy RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 was developer Larian Studios’ magnum opus. Years in the making, the game was released to universal acclaim last year, and quickly became one of 2023’s biggest releases, with sales reckoned to be in the 15 million range.
With success like that behind it, you might think that Larian would start thinking about expansions or even sequels. Instead, studio founder Swen Vincke revealed during a Game Developers Conference panel on the 21st March that Larian wouldn’t be making a sequel, or even developing any Dlc. In fact, Vincke revealed that the studio had started working on Dlc of some form, only to abandon it.

Animation and fantasy go hand in hand. In the 80s, there was a boom of fantasy epics in the land of cartoons that had nothing to do with the House of Mouse and everything to do with adult content. This was helped along from the previous decade by creator Ralph Bakshi, who had started things off with Fritz the Cat and would be the first to do a feature-length version of Lord of The Rings with his animated film and the trippy flick Wizards (and later – the cult film Cool World).
During our fave decade, Anime would find a welcoming home in the US with several classics that would be released during that time. Canada would also get into the mix with Heavy Metal (which we’ll get to.) But Ralph Bakshi decided to join forces with one of the biggest names in fantasy art for a new entry into...

It’s sad to say, but death seems to be working overtime as we close out 2023. Following the news that beloved character actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, come the passing of two more well-loved supporting players in TV and film. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.
Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

In most cases, for most actors, typecasting can be a curse, a trap to be avoided. This is understandable, especially for actors who have either been trained on stage or have a natural affinity for character parts and don't wish to keep playing the same type of role over and over again.
Yet typecasting can also be a boon for an actor in many ways. For one thing, it can be a sort of job security, particularly within television or franchise filmmaking, as the "sell" of the actor in a role is more or less already done for them by their successful past work. For another, it allows the actor a sort of safety net, a proven track record that they can fall back on. Thus, they can feel free to take risks, knowing they already have an established screen persona.

More than a decade after the "Wizards of Waverly Place" series finale aired in 2012, showrunner Peter Murrieta validated one of Disney Channel's biggest ships: Alex Russo and Stevie Nichols. Speaking with former "Wizards" stars Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise on the "Wizards of Waverly Pod" on March 27, Murrieta confirmed that Alex, played by Selena Gomez, was bisexual and had romantic feelings for Stevie, played by Hayley Kiyoko.
"It was pretty clear to all of us what that relationship was."
When asked if there was a storyline he would have liked to explore further in the series, Murrieta didn't hesitate to reference the obvious flirtations between the characters on screen.
"I wish we could have played more with what was quite obvious to a lot of us: the relationship between Stevie and Alex," he said.

No disrespect to Alex Russo’s star-crossed romance with werewolf Mason, but the original showrunner of Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place had a much more interesting pairing in mind for Selena Gomez‘s character, one fans never got to see.

The star of the 2023 Oscar season was “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but you could be forgiven for thinking it was A24. The company picked up nine Oscars at the ceremony and there wasn’t a safe commercial bet among them.
On top of launching the zany ambition of “Everything Everywhere” into a $107 million worldwide gross, A24 also scored two Oscars for Darren Aronofsky’s divisive “The Whale,” which sneaked its way past $35 million accumulated over a gradual release plan. Its nominees also included two Cannes acquisitions, Best International Feature Film nominee “Close” and “Aftersun,” which secured a Best Actor nomination for Paul Mescal and solidified his stardom. Despite the blockbuster successes of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022, the year’s big winner was a company that didn’t exist when these franchises were born.

What constitutes the perfect partner? A time machine offers its user the chance to make a seemingly ideal companion in “Meet Cute.” The new film builds on common perceptions of rom-coms, giving the genre a distinctive sci-fi twist. Pete Davidson and Kaley Cuoco star as a couple relying on this surprising secret to dating success. Both leads have proven themselves with well-reviewed performances — Davidson in “The King of Staten Island” and Cuoco in “The Flight Attendant.” That recognition also pays off as they get executive producer credits on ‘Cute.’

What Westerners don’t know about Noh — the classical Japanese theater form in which masked dancers gracefully interpret supernatural tales — could easily fill a 12-hour PBS documentary. But who wants to watch that? Certainly not the audience renegade anime director Masaaki Yuasa is after with “Inu-oh,” a rowdy punk alternative focusing on two social rejects whose defiantly original performance style broke all the rules and elevated them to rock-star status, only to be (all but) forgotten by history.
Among the most unpredictable artists of his medium, Yuasa specializes in trippy, off-the-wall anime features such as “Mind Game” and “Night Is Short, Walk On Girl” that recall the work of psychedelic toonsmith Ralph Bakshi at his anti-establishment extreme. A24 has acquired the North American rights to “Aftersun,” Charlotte Wells’ drama that stars Paul Mescal and made its premiere at Cannes in the Critics’ Week section of the festival.
The film is Wells’ directorial debut and also stars newcomer Frankie Corio.
“Aftersun” has proven to be a real tearjerker and a critical darling out of Cannes among many highlights thus far. The film follows Corio as Sophie, a girl on a melancholy holiday with her young father, played by Mescal. The film shows Sophie as an adult reflecting on memories both real and imagined as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t.

In DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys,” Marc Maron voices Mr. Snake, the second-in-command of a group of criminal animals attempting to pull off a major heist. However, Maron admitted to Variety at the film’s premiere on Tuesday in Los Angeles that he doesn’t like animated movies.
“I’m not a big animated movie guy, my sense of animation goes back to when I was in high school and Ralph Bakshi’s ‘Wizards’ came out,” Maron said, referencing the 1977 sci-fi film. “So my point of reference is a little stale. But this one was good!”
And then later this year, Maron will be voicing legendary comic book villain Lex Luthor in “DC League of Super-Pets.” “They wanted me to be dry and sarcastic,” Maron said. “So I played it kind of like me, but with a little more of a bite. That one, I didn’t even realize it was a big movie.

Update: Jon Stewart has taken to social media to clarify his remarks about Rowling on “The Problem” podcast.
“I do not think J.K. Rowling is antisemitic. I did not accuse her of being antisemitic,” Stewart said. “I do not think the ‘Harry Potter’ movies are antisemitic. I really love the ‘Harry Potter’ movies, probably too much for a gentleman of my considerable age.”

A December 2021 episode of Jon Stewart’s “The Problem with Jon Stewart” podcast is making headlines for the host’s takedown of J.K. Rowling’s depiction of goblins in the author’s “Harry Potter” franchise. In the “Harry Potter” universe, goblins work at and run the Gringotts Bank. Stewart drew a comparison between the goblins depicted on screen in the “Harry Potter” films and the anti-Semitic illustrations featured in the 1903 book “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”
“Here’s how you know Jews are still where they are,” Stewart said on the podcast episode. “Talking to people, here’s what I say: Have you ever seen a ‘Harry Potter’ movie? “Wizards,” the final series in Guillermo del Toro’s animated “Tales of Arcadia” saga, will premiere Aug. 7 on Netflix.
The DreamWorks Animation series tells the the story of wizard-in-training Douxie (Colin O’Donoghue) and other heroes of Arcadia on time travel adventure that takes them to the medieval realm of Camelot. It follows previous series “TrollHunters” and “3Below.”
“‘Wizards’ brings the trilogy full circle,” says del Toro. “It’s a show that explores the origins of the entire mythology and also an adventure that moves everything- propels it- into the future. We reunite with old friends and get to understand old foes…”
Returning cast members from previous “Tales of Arcadia” installments include Emile Hirsch, Lexi Medrano, Charlie Saxton, Steven Yeun, David Bradley, Lena Headey, Fred Tatasciore, Clancy Brown, Diego Luna, Mark Hamill, and Kelsey Grammer. Joining the cast are Alfred Molina, Stephanie Beatriz, James Faulkner, and John Rhys Davies.

With less than a week to go until Magic: The Gathering‘s latest set starts rolling out across the collectable card game’s various formats, Wizards of the Coast has finally exhausted its supply of card spoilers. Indeed, all 397 cards in the impressively-sized Core 2021 are now known among the Magic community, though as always, it won’t be until at least a few weeks post-launch that a newly-established metagame is agreed upon.
It’s in this relatively short window that decks are at their most experimental phase, making each match wildly more unpredictable than the status quo that follows. There’s only so many times, after all, that one can compete against yet another green/black Lurrus deck for the umpteenth time without losing any and all enthusiasm to play. Fortunately, Wizards is well aware of the necessity to keep things feeling fresh on a regular basis and not just...

Wizards of the Coast’s countdown to Magic: The Gathering‘s next set release is well and truly underway.
Due to release later this month for Arena and a week later for traditional tabletop, Core 2021 is already promising to cause a massive reshuffle of the current Standard meta. There are still a few weeks to go until the cards finally find their way into players’ hands, of course, meaning we’ve seen but a fraction of the entire set, but even at this early stage, Wizards certainly seems dead set on making this mid-year expansion one to remember.
Reprints of old, extremely sought-after cards such as Grim Tutor and Ugin, Spirit Dragon are just some of those powerhouses already revealed, with brand new additions such as Mangara, the Diplomat already proving to be a hot topic among fans of white decks. As for today’s reveals, on the other hand,...

While Magic: The Gathering has never been known as a cheap form of entertainment, fans of the long-running collectable card game think Wizards of the Coast has gone one step too far with its latest product. Double Masters, a compilation set due to arrive later this year, features a large number of desirable reprints such as Doubling Season and Mana Crypt, cards that frequently fetch high individual prices on the secondary market.
In addition to the set’s clearly desirable contents, however, Wizards’ decision to include 2 rares and foils (at the bare minimum) in each booster pack has naturally led to the Rrp of each 36-pack booster box being far above that of what would usually be expected. While the price tag has since been removed from Amazon’s product listing, pre-orders briefly opened last week for $300 Usd per box and $16.50 for individual 15-card packs.

A new Magic: The Gathering keyword introduced with Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths has already had a massive impact on the metagame despite the set being less than a week old. Companions, creature spells that trigger a permanent effect by meeting pre-determined conditions, are not only dominating Standard play but almost every ruleset considered legal for competitive play.
The majority of top players participating in various Magic: The Gathering Online tournaments since Ikoria‘s release opted to build their strategy around one of the powerful cards, with Arena Decklists podcast co-host Bryan Gottlieb recently pointing out just how prevalent Companions have proven to be in such a short space of time. The number of top finishes taken by decks including any one of ten Companions available was as follows, according to Gottlieb:
1st and 2nd in the Vintage Challenge 1st to 4th in the Legacy Challenge The entire Top 8 of the...
