New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.
The Uncanny (1977)
Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)
Directed by Denis Héroux.
The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

2018 honestly feels like a whole lifetime ago. The world was certainly in a much different place. Horror fans were eager to witness the next chapter in the beloved Halloween saga, spearheaded by the Pineapple Express folks. We’d finally gotten a sequel to The Strangers, though horror had been cycling through its latest in a seemingly long series of those Insidious flicks. Films like Mandy and Luca Guadagino’s Suspiria were on the horizon.
Now, just as we’re barely halfway through 2023, horror fans are eager to witness the next chapter in The Exorcist franchise, spearheaded by the Pineapple Express folks. There’s a new addition to the Insidious franchise out now, and. Uhm. Well – time is certainly a flat circle.
Nevertheless, looking back now – it feels as though horror was at the precipice of a massive shift. It geared toward a new direction in storytelling and filmmaking that set...

Kim Petras is ready to eat. The singer shared the tracklist of her debut album, Feed the Beast, on Monday evening alongside an image of a sharp sword resting against jagged rocks. The new record will arrive on June 23 after a series of starts and stops over the past few years.
Ahead of the release date announcement earlier this month, the singer posted a cryptic medieval mood board. The photo set included a grayscale image of a knight’s helmet, a metal shield, and three different swords. “The story begins on June 23rd,...

A new content management company targeting social media influencers is being formed by actress Bella Thorne and longtime manager Thor Bradwell.
Content X will manage social media influencers and their social media accounts with the goal of building profitable profiles. It will also provide expertise in navigating the ever-changing social media universe.
The venture will see Thorne act as the creative director in charge of all content. Talent manager Tamara Thorne and Michael Cohen will act as co-heads of development.
The 23-year-old Thorne has actively leveraged social media, including the adult content site OnlyFans.com, which she crashed last summer.
The announcement called Thorne “a rising mogul. Everything she touches is successful, from being a bestselling author and entrepreneur.” It went on to state that Thorne was an early adopter of social media and built successful platforms.

You got witch-hunting in my vampirism! Yeah? Well, you got vampirism in my witch-hunting! Deliciously combined, Hammer’s Twins of Evil (1971) pits religious fanaticism against vampiric seduction in the third and final film of the Karnstein trilogy, and it’s a fittingly erotic and spirited sendoff.
Released by Rank Film Distributors in the U.K. and Universal Pictures stateside, Twins of Evil was part of a double bill with Hands of the Ripper, and as these things do, brought in the casual viewer looking for a little mayhem to tide them over. Twins of Evil however, still manages to seduce the viewer through muscular filmmaking and solid performances, with the biggest draw being the stunning Collinson sisters, Mary and Madeleine, as our titular characters. They make it one of the most lascivious of the latter day Hammer films; no small feat, that.

Anyone who’s been a mother knows our identities shape-shift from pregnancy and changing diapers to helping our high-schoolers navigate AP classes. With Reese Witherspoon’s Elena and Kerry Washington’s Mia, the characters’ contrasting parenting styles, and the resulting friction, spark flames on Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere.” Fans of the show often pass judgment of its lead female characters, especially how they measure up as women – and, ever more so, mothers.
In the scenes set in the 1990s, the popular melodrama’s “present,” Elena and Mia are frequently portrayed as opposites. Well-dressed white homeowner Elena is a married mother of four. Denim jeans-wearing African-American renter Mia has one beautiful daughter, no partner, and a big chip on her shoulder.

Hulu’s Midwestern eight-episode limited series that primarily unfolds in the ’90s, “Little Fires Everywhere,” centers on the mother of all battles. Who is the best mother? Is it Kerry Washington‘s cool artist Mia Warren or Reese Witherspoon’s alpha journalist Elena Richardson? Or does neither meet matriarchal standards?
At the Emmys, both stars compete for Best Actress in a Movie/Miniseries. Witherspoon is currently ranked fifth and Washington sixth in Gold Derby’s odds that are based upon the combination of latest predictions by our Experts, Editors and Users. Let’s leave it to Emmy voters to decide that contest, while we ask you to determine the major mom face-off in our poll below.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Episode 6 of “Little Fires Everywhere.”)
The first five episodes of the Hulu adaptation of Celeste Ng’s “Little Fires Everywhere” have had the benefit of being led by Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, two critically acclaimed actresses playing two very different women.
Wednesday’s installment still features the “Big Little Lies” alum as the tightly wound, upper class Elena and the “Scandal” vet as the closely guarded, starving artist Mia, mothers who are at odds with each other as they tackle issues of class and race in an Ohio suburb in the ’90s. But the real stars of the episode are AnnaSophia Robb and Tiffany Boone, who were faced with the challenge of playing the younger versions of Witherspoon and Washington’s characters.

Ken Kirby is ready to jump into the soapy prime time drama of Dynasty. The Good Trouble actor is set to recur on the CW reboot of the iconic series in the role of Evan Tate, Trixie’s (Jessi Goei) older brother. And as we all know, Trixie is Fallon’s (Elizabeth Gillies) friend who died ten years ago and whose body was pulled from the lake in the season finale.
Kirby’s casting is refreshing in a time when Dynasty has seen a slew of changes in its casting during the first two seasons. The lead role of Cristal went through two changes. The first time Ana Brenda Contreras replaced original star Nathalie Kelley after the end of Season 1. And recently, Contreras was replaced by Daniella Alonso as the series headed into Season 3. Full disclosure: I’m not a cat guy. Sorry! Nothing against them, but I’ve always preferred the company of dogs. However, I’ve always admired a cat’s sense of self, and their stubborn refusal to do anything at all unless it’s on their own terms. According to The Uncanny (1977), that would also include murder, as these kitties claw and bite their way to vengeance, and leave it to Severin Films to give them a brand spanking new Blu-ray litter box to play in.
A co-production between Canada’s Cinévidéo and the UK’s The Rank Organisation, The Uncanny was shot in Quebec and England for less than a million dollars. One may presume that a solid portion of the film was spent on acquiring Donald Pleasence, Peter Cushing, Ray Milland, John Vernon, and Samantha Eggar for the wraparound and the three individual segments. Our pals at cult home video label Severin Films recently announced their May Blu-ray releases along with special webstore exclusives that fans are going to love. We get two newish features and one cult classic this month, which is an unusual ration for the label who have made a name for themselves with consistently solid releases of older films. However, even the contemporary films looks pretty insane and I can't wait to see them. Check the gallery below for details on anthology horror film, The Uncanny, modern bizarro cult splatter gross-out St. Bernard, directed by FX wiz and frequent Frank Henenlotter collaborator Gabe Bartalos, and a shot-on-16mm oddity 25 years in the making, Masked Mutilator! Looking to add some scares to your viewing slate this summer? Severin Films has you covered (in blood) with their upcoming May Blu-ray releases that include The Uncanny, the wrestling horror movie Masked Mutilator, and Saint Bernard from writer, director, and makeup effects master Gabe Bartalos:
"This May, Severin Films is unleashing three visionary films that only the strongest viewers will be able to witness without losing their sanity. May 28th brings the long- awaited disc debut of the classic anthology horror The Uncanny, starring Peter Cushing & Ray Milland. May 14th sees the arrival of two brand-new, very different, outsider visions: FX guru Gabe Bartalos’ unhinged St. Bernard breaks down the barriers of good taste and Masked Mutilator splatters the blood of the wrestling ring all over Severin’s sub-label Intervision Picture Corp.
The Uncanny:
In 1977, legendary Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky teamed with Canadian producer Claude Héroux for the anthology shocker CelluloidDiaries.

When two people bear a striking resemblance to one another, we often call those similarities uncanny. The word is so rarely used outside that context, in fact, that we may forget its most basic definition: “seeming to have a supernatural character or origin.” For two things to have a truly uncanny resemblance, simply looking alike isn’t enough — they have to arouse discomfort for being nearly, but not entirely, identical. The more alike they are, the more unsettling their small differences become.
Jordan Peele understands that distinction, and he puts it to effective use in his second film, “Us.” A horror-thriller about a family of four confronted by their ill-intentioned doppelgängers, it brings to mind not only such genre influences as “The Twilight Zone” but also this passage from Sigmund Freud’ 1919 essay “The Uncanny”:
“The subject of the ‘uncanny’ is a province of this kind. It is undoubtedly related...

Here's our pick of the most terrifying sea monsters, snakes and, er, sheep...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Animals have been our companions for millennia, but what happens when nature… goes bad? Some of cinema’s scariest moments come from creatures who have become freakishly intelligent, aggressive, or large, normally as a result of human experimentation. Other times, it’s simply that our reckless disregard for the natural order means a clash between man and beast; a fair fight only if we have guns, fireballs, and industrial-strength pesticides.
While the likes of Jaws and Arachnophobia create hauntingly iconic scenes that spring to mind at inopportune moments in your life, glorious counterparts to these classics are to be found in the cinematic bargain bin. Sometimes a straight-up thriller becomes a B-movie simply with the passage of time, as the animatronic monster becomes less terrifying and more ludicrous.

Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...
This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.
The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.
Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding association with the supernatural – whether as an omen...

It’s Hammer Time again! Every once in a while I like to dip back to that golden age, where the revered monsters of yore were dusted off with loving care for a newly appreciative crowd of teenagers at the Drive-In. Building upon the worldwide success of The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Horror of Dracula (’58), and The Mummy (’59), it was time for another Drac attack. The Brides of Dracula (1960) keeps up the high level horror, as long as you’re okay with a Dracula movie having no Dracula. Looking back on the whole series, Brides stands out (and up) due to this very omission.
Released in the UK in July, with a stateside rollout in September, Brides was another hit for the unstoppable Hammer machine; and why wouldn’t it be? All the staples (by this point, a formula, really) are present: cleavage, gorgeous cinematography, solid performances, and a gloriously elevated Gothic tone.

During his fifty years as an actor, Peter Cushing found himself up against many monsters (some of whom he created) of varying creepiness. From his star-making role as Baron Frankenstein, the monster hunter certainly had his hands full...
The Abominable Snowman (1957): Intelligent Val Guest science fiction thriller, with Cushing’s scientist Dr John Rollison leading an expedition to find the Yeti, only to learn there is something more other-worldly about this particular monster.
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959): Cushing gives his finest performance as Sherlock Holmes, battling the ferocious (and rather feeble-looking) dog that has cursed the Baskerville family for centuries. Cushing played the Great Detective in a 1968 TV series and turned up years later in The Mask of Death (1984), looking very frail but never losing his spark.
The Mummy (1959): Cushing plays crippled archaeologist John Banning, who ignores native warnings and activates a mummy (Lee again) that wrecks havoc.
