I had been expecting Date Night, the movie that finally unites Michael Scott and Liz Lemon on an adventure of mayhem, to be something along the lines of The Out-of-Towners, in which an ordinary couple gets besieged by a series of bizarre circumstances that make their lives miserable. But based on the movie's first trailer, which debuted today at Apple.com, it's more like North by Northwest mixed with a dozen other gangster movies. Not that it won't be worth watching-- anything that brings together Steve Carell and Tina Fey is an automatic win, and the trailer looks pretty funny in its own way. But I was expecting more of a madcap adventure than just the two of them running away from villains all night, with gunfire, car chases and glowering baddies who all look straight out of Grand Theft Auto. The comedic sensibility will be what saves it, and »

Modern Warfare 2 has become the fastest-selling game ever in the UK. The title sold 1.23 million copies in its first 24 hours on release, smashing the previous day one record of 631,000 units set by Grand Theft Auto IV, according to McV. Activision has also shipped an unprecedented three million copies to retailers, which it hopes will satisfy both launch demand and (more) »

Critics are furious over the violence of "Modern Warfare 2"--and one scene is causing all the problems.
Yesterday saw the release of one of the most hotly anticipated video games in recent memory, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It's already been called an instant classic. And its extreme levels of violence in game are touching off controversy. Even gamers themselves are expressing dismay, saying the game borders "on snuff."
One scene in particular is causing the trouble: The game places you in the role of a terrorist, mowing down civilian bystanders. The set-up is that you're trying to infiltrate a band of Russian terrorists. To gain their trust, you've got to go on a killing spree at their leader's bidding. As your virtual commanding officer declares, "You don't know what it's already cost to put you next to him. It will cost you a piece of yourself. It'll cost nothing compared to everything you'll save. »

Michael Madsen calls movies "pictures" and makes a new one every couple weeks. I happened to check his IMDb page recently, and I noticed something incredible: the man acted in 25 movies released this year. 25*! Sure, they all have dubious titles like You Might As Well Live, Lost in the Woods, and Road of No Return. Sure, Madsen mostly plays characters with names like "The Reverend," "The Associate," and "Clinton Manitoba." But the sheer quantity of Madsen-imprinted cinema in 2009 deserves a special kind of acclaim. Madsen is philosophical about his workaholic output. "I'm only good when I'm busy. When I've got nothing to do, »

We here at Reel Loop are expanding our horizons a bit. While we’ll still continue to be primarily a film website, me (Philip) has tortured the site editor (Mr. Erik) to the point where he had no other option to do this. In addition to film and television, we’re going to start covering the other visual medium. No, I’m not talking about pornography, I’m talking about something I have my first memory of; video games.
To kick off this celebration, we’ll be doing what any other gaming site in their right mind is doing and going ga-ga over a certain thing coming out this Tuesday, the tenth of November. It’s an entity so powerful, it’s said to cure cancer. This is something so miraculous, that the poison that is Twilight will implode on itself when the clock strikes 12:01 Am Est on Tuesday. »

*Until they actually make the movie
Forget Scientology or Heaven's Gate. Today, the biggest cult in our country may very well be the teeming masses anxiously awaiting the return of "Arrested Development." After years of rumors and dashed hopes, it seems the beloved TV show will finally, for real, this time, be reincarnated on the big screen.
But don't break out your Cornballers yet: the film isn't set to hit theaters until 2011. How will you last that long? While you can treasure your DVD collection of all three seasons (or, for that matter, catch re-airs on IFC), you'll probably want to vary things up in the year-plus before we get sweet relief. Off the top of your head, you might know to watch Michael Cera in "Juno," but where can you find Judy Greer in a role as crazy as Kitty Sanchez? Will Arnett as a man as bumbling and self-involved as Gob? »

Rockstar North has said that the Grand Theft Auto episodes were planned from the beginning of GTA IV's development. Associate producer Imran Sarwar said that Niko's story in Liberty City was always going to be a small part. "Even at the end of his story, he's not the king of the town by any means," he told Cvg. "The idea was to use the episodes to reveal the rest of that world, to show some of the characters and events that were invisible to Niko and yet still had a bearing on events in his life." Responding to queries about why the downloadable episodes (more) »

Still Raining, Still Dreaming (Phil Solomon) / Waterfront Follies (Ernie Gehr)
A perfect double feature. Still Raining, Still Dreaming continues Solomon's explorations of Grand Theft Auto, this time without the glitches, to make the film's background texture–the characters and shadows programmed to pass on-screen–his foreground; in Waterfront Follies Ernie Gehr tapes three sunsets in Brooklyn with a shitty decade-old camcorder that, as Daniel Kasman put it, “can barely register the image.” Gehr calls his movie a “manufactured universe,” which is what they both are: self-contained worlds that show natural phenomena to be a matter of artificial programming. On film, Waterfront Follies would just show three sunsets from the pier and unbearable to watch with the sun staring into the camera for 40 minutes. On video, the sun becomes a flat disc that lowers itself across the screen as the light of sky and the lapping water (heard lapping smoothly, but »

"The Ballad of Gay Tony," the second (and presumably final) Dlc episode for "Grand Theft Auto 4" drops this week. The episode is available through Xbox Live Marketplace, or as part of a stand-alone retail disc, "Episodes From Liberty City," which also includes the content released in the last Dlc pack, "The Lost and The Damned." Since the latter has been covered extensively, we'll be focusing on "The Ballad of Gay Tony" in this review.
The Basics
Same as it ever was, folks. Not that "GTA" fans would have it any other way. "The Ballad of Gay Tony" brings us back to Liberty City, giving us new perspectives on Rockstar's New York City-in-satire from the point of view of a club-hopping bodyguard/enforcer. It weaves in and out of pre-existing storylines while introducing a colorful cast of all-new characters.

Rockstar's upcoming detective period piece, "La Noire," has mostly remained in the shadows in terms of concrete information. A casting call put out by La Casting seems to have spilled the beans a bit, though, revealing the names of just about every major character that'll appear in the game.
Admittedly not very interesting, given that there's nothing super spoilery about a bunch of names. Perhaps more interesting is the rate that the game's protagonist, Cole Phelps, would receive for his work.
The casting call lists a $781.75 per day rate on all actors (for both mo-cap and voice), which is the standard SAG rate for interactive media. The listing also says that Cole will be working for 3 months from November to January. If you factor in three days for Thanksgiving, two days for Christmas and one for New Years Day you end up with 59 working days, which comes out to $46,123.

We've finally uncovered the answer to one of life's eternal quandaries: Q: What in the world could make a brown-eyed girl turn blue? Na-na-na-na-na! A: Grand Theft Auto. Obviously. I knew something might eventually prompt the unlikely thought, "I'd like to learn more about the Grand Theft Auto franchise," but never imagined it would be the use of classic 1988 Roxette song "The Look" in a marketing campaign for Episodes from Liberty City (featuring The Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and Damned, out October 29). It all makes sense because Gay Tony owns a shimmery '80s nightclub! Any reminder »

India may already be a nuclear power with one of the world's biggest film industries, but the country has now added a new crown jewel to its collection -- a Guinness World Record for "Grand Theft Auto IV." 26-year-old Chirantan Patnaik now owns the official record for longest continuous play session on "GTA IV" thanks to certification from Guinness World Records (and a long-lasting PlayStation 3).
"There are so many other games which I have played for long hours," Patnaik said, according to Zee News. "But I had never tried playing this particular game seriously. However, I knew that I can do it after I saw my brother playing it."
Patnaik credits a stringent exercise regiment of running and yoga for his accomplishment, which eclipses the previously held record of 28 hours and 1 minute, held by an American.

The comics community watched with the rest of the Twittersphere yesterday as the saga of the balloon boy played out in Colorado. Joe Hill, Ron Marz and Frank Tieiri were also among those calling shenanigans on the whole affair.
Meanwhile, there may not have been any balloons, but Marvel provided a cake yesterday for Brian Michael Bendis to celebrate his 10-year mark working for the company. Plenty of congratulatory tweets predictably ensued, and we echo them, as he's proven himself to be quite the script marathoner during his time there. Scope out those posts after the jump, along with a Bryan Lee O'Malley tweet from Ubisoft HQ, Sean Phillips on his new "28 Days Later" cover and more.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for October 16, 2009.
@joe_hill The runaway balloon story has, definitely, acquired a rather dubious odor. I'm not calling bullsh--, but if it was an egg I wouldn't eat it. »

Anyone who has been a member of XBox Live for the past few years has been aware that they could purchase some classic XBox games via download through XBox Originals. This would lay the groundwork for the recently deployed Games on Demand program that contains XBox 360 gems like Grand Theft Auto 4, Mass Effect and Oblivion. Stored to the player’s hard drive and tied to their XBox Live account, the customer never has to touch a disc to play their favorite games.
Also added to this list has been the XBox exclusive Fable II which came out last year on retail discs. The way Fable II is being sold to customers is an entirely new way to distribute previously released full retail games as it takes an episodic format. Through Games on Demand, players can download the first of five chapters in the game for free.

I'm not impressed with a lot of Nic Cage's movies of late. It's so frustrating when you know he could have done better movies. The Nic Cage of today seems like a totally different actor from the Nic cage of yesteryears. I first saw him in Birdy, as Sergeant Al Columbato, an injured Vietnam vet who has a peculiar friend - Birdy, played by Matthew Modine. I love his performances in Guarding Tess, Moonstruck, Matchstick Men and Leaving Las Vegas.

Perhaps his collaboration with Werner Herzog's in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans would mark the return of the real Nic Cage.
Remarked Michael Bialas @the HuffPost: Cage has made quite a career for himself in playing erratic characters (Matchstick Men, Vampire's Kiss) living on the edge. While his notorious movie meltdown scenes are legendary, he may even "over-the-top" himself in Bad Lieutenant. »
