Somers Clarifies Swayze Chemo Comments

Actress Suzanne Somers has backtracked over remarks she made about the late Patrick Swayze's cancer treatment, insisting her comments were misconstrued in the press.
The Three's Company star, who suffered her own cancer setback earlier this year, infuriated Swayze's grieving pals when she allegedly told a Canadian reporter the actor could have lived longer had he chosen alternative medical treatments instead of chemotherapy.
Somers is said to have told columnist Shinan Govani, "They took this beautiful man and they basically put poison in him. Why couldn't they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins in his body?"
The remarks prompted Swayze's Ghost co-star and devastated friend Whoopi Goldberg to publicly chastise Somers, claiming she "should know better".
But Somers maintains she didn't mean to offend anyone with her comments and simply meant Swayze might have benefited from testing other cancer treatments, like her late pal Farrah Fawcett.
She says, "I said an offhand remark... I shouldn't have said it, as a person in the public eye, even in private, what I say can leak out.
"(But) I had been through this cancer thing myself. I watched Farrah Fawcett die; she was a friend of mine. So it was my frustration from that that maybe if someone had gotten to her in another way (she might still be alive).
"If you are touched by cancer in some way, don't you want to know about other ways (of treatment)?"
Fawcett lost her battle with anal cancer in June after undergoing alternative medical treatment in Germany.
Swayze died in September following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Somers has previously stated she has written a letter to Swayze's widow Lisa Niemi apologising for her comments.

Suzanne Somers feared she had just days to live after doctors wrongly diagnosed with her full-body cancer last year.
The Three's Company star announced in 2001 she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and rejected chemotherapy in favour of a natural treatment called Iscador, a mistletoe extract.
She refused after-care treatment and stuck to alternative aids and a healthy diet - but fell seriously ill in November when her body began swelling, welts appeared on her skin, and she struggled to breathe.
The actress was rushed to hospital, where several doctors concluded she had lung cancer that had spread throughout her entire body.
She refused full-body chemotherapy and instead opted for surgery to remove tumours - but was amazed when surgeons later told her they cound find nothing wrong with her.
She tells U.S. TV show host Larry King, "He (the doctor) said, 'You have a mass on your lung. It looks like the cancer metastasised into your liver. You have so many tumors in your chest, we can't count them... And you have a blood clot and you have pneumonia.' Six doctors over six days confirming that I should get my things in order...
"They take me into surgery... And I'm thinking I'm about to find out if I'm going to live or die, most likely die. It's been confirmed by six doctors.
"I woke up in intensive care to hear, 'Wow, you don't have any cancer anywhere.'"
Doctors were baffled by Somers' condition, and she decided to leave their care after they made plans to test her for a number of serious diseases.
The star believes she had a reaction to a substance and she's now urging cancer patients to seek a second opinion, adding: "They were all wrong. That's why I wrote this book. That's what we lay people need to understand... I'm just saying, choose whatever you want."

"I don't know anything about his cancer, I apologized profusely to his family." Suzanne reportedly talked about Swayze right after he died to a Toronto-based columnist of the National Post, saying, "They took this beautiful man and they basically put poison in him. ... Why couldn't they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins in his body? I hate to be this controversial. I'm a singer-dancer-comedienne. But we have an epidemic going on, and I have to say it." Suzanne says she wrote a letter of apology to Swayze's brother and asked him to pass along her words to Swayze's wife,

Whoopi Goldberg has chastised Suzanne Somers after she reportedly blamed Patrick Swayze's death on his chemo treatment.
Goldberg was furious after learning the Three's Company star, a breast cancer survivor, told a Canadian reporter that Swayze could have extended his life if he had turned to alternative aids instead of chemotherapy.
Somers is said to have told columnist Shinan Govani, "They took this beautiful man and they basically put poison in him. Why couldn't they have built him up nutritionally and gotten rid of the toxins in his body?"
Swayze's Ghost co-star took aim at Somers on her U.S. TV talk show The View on Wednesday, telling the actress she "should know better".
Goldberg said: "In case she doesn't know, Patrick did everything and went everywhere to try and stay healthy as long as he could.
"That he's been gone a week and this statement came out is bad timing and bad taste and Suzanne, you know better. And I'm not sure that's not what you meant to do, but you should have thought about it."
Somers has responded to the controversy on her official website, insisting she wasn't aware her comments would be published.
She writes, "In a casual conversation at a private party (with someone who never identified himself as a reporter) at the Toronto Film Festival last week, I was asked about this beloved actor. It was never my intention to make an official statement about his passing.
"I was not informed or aware I was being interviewed. I would never have been so insensitive as to offer a public statement so close to his untimely passing. I sincerely apologize if my comment has caused any additional pain to his family during this difficult time. I send my deepest condolences for their loss."

Patrick Swayze passed away from pancreatic cancer on Monday (September 14th) after being diagnosed back in January of 2008. He has now been cremated and his ashes are being held at his lawyer's office until his wife Lisa Niemi can arrange to scatter his remains on his New Mexico ranch. A public event is being planned in the town of Lake Lure, North Carolina, where much of the 1987 movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed. The memorial service will take place on Saturday (September 19th) at 7pm at Firefly Cove, used at Camp Chimney in the movie. The ceremony is free to attend, but organizers want visitors to donate money to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. In nutjob news, Suzanne Somers ("Three's Company") is now blaming chemotherapy for killing Swayze, stating that the actor should have used alternative methods to treat his cancer. "They took this beautiful man and they basically put poison in him,

In 2002, John Ritter returned to ABC, the network that aired Three's Company, the sitcom that made him a star 15 years earlier.
In 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, Ritter plays sportswriter and dad Paul Hennessy. He wants to take a more active role in the lives of his children so, when his wife Cate (Katey Sagal) returns to work full-time, he decides to stay home to take care of the kids. The trouble is that they're now a trio of independent teenagers -- popular Bridget (Kelly Cuoco), brainy Kerry (Amy Davidson), and smart-aleck Rory (Martin Spanjers).
The show was a moderate success, ranked 43rd for its first season on the air, and was renewed with an average of 10.85 million viewers. As you may recall, Ritter died unexpectedly after completion of the third episode of season two. The show's production was shut down to give the cast and crew time

Worry Not, 'Idol' Fans: Paula Abdul Isn't Going Anywhere

By now you've seen the headlines and read the countless reports about "American Idol" continuing next season without the resident nice lady Paula Abdul. Heck, you probably even Tweeted about it. ("Keep Paula" was one of the hottest Twitter trends over the weekend. Suck it, Cronkite!)
But before "Idol" fans have a collective "Bratz!"-sized meltdown about their favorite show returning without their favorite loony aunt, there is something important I need to say: Paula Abdul is not leaving "American Idol." At least, I don't think so.
In my opinion, Paula and her management team are merely playing hardball with "Idol" producers. We all know that Ryan Seacrest just got signed to a bajillion dollar deal. (Actually, it was $15 million per year. Same difference.) Why shouldn't Paula step up her negotiations in a big way? Everyone else is making bank — why not her?
Furthermore, Simon Cowell is employing similar tactics.
